5 Years of Hoshimachi Suisei

This video is a year overdue, hence it being titled ”5 years of Hoshimachi Suisei” when at this point it should be 6 years. But I’m glad to be able to complete such a lengthy project since I haven’t done anything like this before. This was a little passion project I had with the original intention to simply talk about my favorite VTuber and reminisce on the many stories she’s created, and how her presence changed the industry that once ignored her. She has left a long-lasting impact on the world and she’s not even done yet. I hope you enjoyed this video and that you learned a little more about what Suisei has been up to recently, as well as giving you a feel of who she is if you are new or aren’t so familiar with Suisei. I wasn’t able to talk about everything I wanted to in this video since it would be even longer and it might lose its focus, so I plan to make another lengthy video on her soon™. I’m currently drowning in university so whether or not I’ll be able to make this is up to future me’s abilities. Please do point out any mistakes that I have committed here, like mistranslations or wrong information. Clarifications and constructive criticism are always appreciated. I’ll do my best to make corrections accordingly and I apologize for my shortcomings. Feel free to share your favorite tidbits and facts about Suisei that I didn’t tackle in this video. (I'll continue to add corrections and notes to this comment in the future.) [Some Additional Notes] -It was recently announced that Suisei will be added to the game The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage. The collaboration event will occur on Mar 11 - Apr 10 2024. Suisei loves the franchise a lot and has said it was one of the things that inspired her to be a VTuber. Suisei has also mentioned that she’s interested in the management side of VTubers, where she’d like to learn how to produce certain projects she has in mind. This could be the reason why Hoshimatic Project was created, aside from her wanting to do formation dancing with a group. 9 members along with Suisei streamed their practice sessions for the dances which they will perform during Hololive’s 2023-2024 Countdown Live. They received their own special Live2D outfits with multiple variations to choose from, and official merch as well. Kuzuha, an extremely popular Nijisanji liver, would be the one to top this feat with his single Contrail reaching 1st in the daily ranking and 4th in the weekly ranking. GHOST went up against several hit songs like Dry Flower by Yuuri, Usseewa by Ado, Yoru ni Kakeru and Kaibutsu by Yoasobi, One Last Kiss by Utada Hikaru and Kaikai Kitan by Eve, among many others. TEMPLATE and Wicked featuring Mori Calliope both charted on Oricon’s daily digital single ranking taking the 1st and 2nd spots respectively, with TEMPLATE peaking at 7th in the weekly ranking. Got to admit I used to underestimate Vtuber (and idol culture in general), but when I heard Suisei singing in the first take I got blown away by the sheer power and determination clearly felt from her voice. I was like "So Idol can sing like this too? Wow". Now im a regular viewer on her stream and started to follow other vtubers as well even thought I dont understand Japanese hahaha.

Hey, thanks for the shout out! And great job with the documentary as a whole! I can definitely appreciate just how much work went into putting this together. I'm not exactly a stranger to lengthy videos myself, but even by that standard this is a lot. I hope the algorithm is merciful - it's not always fond of longer videos. I'll pay you back for the mention with some notes! They're good though. The editing is varied and catchy, yet suitably tame for a longer form video. I find the popular, let's say "dynamic" editing style of many shorter clips can be pretty exhausting when stretched over even just 10+ minutes, let alone a whole movie, so I appreciate this approach. The topic selection is balanced and fairly thorough, and the pace strikes a good balance, presenting each subject in detail without letting any one of them get stale. And doing the narration throughout is something I haven't dared do myself, so kudos! I once had a test run of getting someone to record narration for a video for me, and frankly, the juggling act of keeping the energy level up and consistent, maintaining good enunciation, while having to shift to random Japanese words and names is in itself a herculean task, which I think you pulled off nicely. Even when lines were noticeably recorded at different times, it doesn't get jarring or disjointed, which is way trickier than some might realize! I only recently learned you were working on this, and you may have heard I've also toyed with the idea of a long-form movie on Suichan, so I admit I had somewhat mixed feelings when I started watching, something along the lines of "ahh they beat me to it!" ... That said, even just based on the very few parts of my project that I actually completed, the approach is so different that I feel like this movie would be complementary rather than competition. What I had in mind was closer to an analytical dive on Suichan's strengths and peculiarities, so if anything, a detailed historical account like this one is much welcome and something I would wholeheartedly suggest as required viewing if I do ever complete my own silly project. I'm sure if I dug deep enough I'd find things to nitpick at (not enough Tetris maybe? though that could arguably be its own video too), but on the whole I think it's a really very well put together history of our comet. By the way, you're absolutely welcome to use my clips and edits if it makes your life easier for future long-form endeavors! (Credit much appreciated obviously) Well that's enough rambling. My goal for this project was to create something people in the future can watch and then bounce off from assuming Suisei outlives me and I stop uploading like some of the suiclippers before us. As long as it can inform a new hoshiyomi, this video has done its job. I noticed the screenshot I took of your channel was before you blew up! I strive to make stuff that's as timeless as possible, so even if it take a while, people will, hopefully, eventually stumble upon it and be able to enjoy it. I think this is the kind of video that is built to last too. I would hope, whether or not it blows up right away, that people will be pointing new Hoshiyomi to it so they can catch up, not unlike the Aburage115 video. And thanks for the well wishes for channel growth! I try not to worry about sub counts and views and all the rest of it, but obviously it does feel nice to reach more people! I'm mostly just glad I can do it for fun without the pressure of monetization, and without feeling like I have an obligation to translate every piece of content. It's a privilege that we have clippers with so many different styles, speeds and audiences, that there's room for the silly videos I make and passion projects like this. So let's keep it up!

Comet (her first original song) was my first introduction to Suisei and that was back in 2018, only a week after the song was first uploaded. The moment I heard that song, I was instantly captivated by her voice and became a fan of hers. A month after, she had become my number 1 Vtuber Oshi and still is to this day! I'm so happy that the 'diamond in the rough' that I've supported during these last 5 years has been able to realize her dreams and become a real star! Holy hell 1 hour of video of Suinema!? Massive respect to Tsurumi-sama and it even got me emotional learning about how amazing our Comet is 😭. I can't even fathom the hurdles she faced but managed to climbed over and rise to the top like a champ! Also the Zenloss incident was particularly painful to hear because it meant her roots and digital footprint she left behind were unfortunately gone but I hope someday she will be able to recreate them!

On the “Ghost” Section, Ghost is my favourite Suisei original song. From this video only did I know Suisei actually was inspired by how it feels to be a vtuber. On a side note I always thought the song represented how many of us can feel sometimes in our lives. Like in Ghost, “We really do exist! But at the same time we don’t. A subtle and blurry being. Just like *ghosts* “ (1.07 of the mv) It really resonated with me as I have always felt somewhat like a “ghost” to people. To make things easier to understand, the lyrics from Ghost, “Dancer in the dark”. A dancer is someone who entertains, someone who draws the eyes and gaze of everyone, a dancer in the dark makes no sense does it? You cant see them dancing in the dark, but they are still dancing there, but you just don’t know it. Like how I and maybe a lot of people feel how they can give so much, and yet people don’t notice them, because we are like an astral being to them, a ghost. In a world of billions, sometimes it feels difficult to be heard, to be seen, we might all have felt like a ghost at some point. Just wanted to say that this video really educated me more haha. Then again, a song is interpreted however you see fit, and I interpreted it that way. Thanks to Suisei herself for being goated as usual. As always, my fellow Hoshiyomis, Sui-Chan is truly, Kyou Mo Kawaii.

Covid since 2020 doesn't seem that long ago, but its already been 4 years and we have this whole timeline since 2018. It has been 6 years since then but certaintly hasn't felt like that. Despite this, in that 6-7 years, a whole genre of media has formed through VTubing. Indie streamers have boomed and now Vtubing has been a common form of streaming. It is crazy

Currently watching the video. While probably not my top favourite Next Color Planet is probably the most important Suisei song to me personally as it is the song I discovered her from. It is neat to see NekomimiZebra mentioned as their videos are a part of my backlog as well. 18:26 The demonetization arc is also an important part of my journey as a Hoshiyomi as I discovered her around that time and subscribed and started watching her streams then. I joined her membership when she got monetisation back and remained a member since. 21:35 Not to forget those going "Wait, she'll be speaking with a deeper voice all the time now? EVEN BETTER!" 23:30 I was going to write about Nonkini and Kaoo Translates as well but looks like I didn't need to! (I had already typed it out even) Great work man! You are very thorough with this video, I like it a lot. 26:30 A neat moment of Shiraken was when all members but Suisei were officially on the setlist to appear on a part of HoloFes but then Suisei appeared in the concert together with them as well (afaik a somewhat similar thing appeared on this year's Fes as well with Haachama appearing as a surprise). 27:22 Pretty sure said friend was later mentioned as being Nichizono Chigusa from Nijisanji. 28:00 Also some Raise a Suilen members became her fans and appeared in a later 3D live by Suisei as well (which you will probably mention when we get there but still). 28:18 I think, but am not sure, that the use of Backup Dancers in 3D lives was also started/popularised by Suisei. 30:05 I might be misremembering, but I think with this karaoke I saw it scheduled the day before, saw it was a reasonable time in the afternoon (1 or 2 pm I guess?) for my timezone so I could take my time sleeping into the noon but happened to wake up earlier (by an hour or two), noticed that she was already about the start the stream because she had already hit the milestone lol. But it might have been a different event as well, I guess. 51:30 Also, Startend is usually abbreviated as STA which can be seen as their initials, Suisei Towa Aqua. One final nitpick about the video. I understand it was made earlier so could not have the latest information, that is certainly understandable. But since footage of her in the Dance Lesson Outfit can be seen in the video it can't have been made before the announcement of Hoshimatic Project and the dance practice stream. So yeah, I think a mention of the Hoshimatic Project would have been nice. But amazing video overall. Probably will be my go to recommendation for learning about Suisei, surpassing the iconic Aburage115 video (Yiman's video which became the go to for several reactors never managed to surpass it for me). Thought of course, being one and a half hours long might discourage a casual or reaction channel. But still, I think this is an invaluable video that will be very fitting for more interested fans who are willing to dedicate hours to watching content about vtubers.
