Yeah, don't worry about not getting the high 90/80 marks. In the long run it doesn't matter to anyone or employers, and the fact you graduated and stuck through the program is what matters. As a Computer Science Major who has an older brother in Mechanical Engineering, and many friends who *attempted* Mechanical Engineering, these grades really are solid! The 3 courses he struggled in are infamous for being a struggle across just about any University, and having attended the courses (mostly for fun, I asked the professor if I could audit the course, to which they replied I was more than welcome to) and yea... Dynamics, Fluid Dynamics, and certain other courses are awful to take. xD

also wasn't that good at maths but found that even though it doesn't come naturally you can sort of brute force it and eventually it all snaps together once you've filled up most of the gaps. I would never have done it if I didn't like it, there are far easier ways to make money especially if you are already clever enough to get into an eng program. if you do the feeling of having overcome is great though.
@Squash1013 жыл бұрын
Rodney Mugwara right now I’m taking Calc 2 and it looks REALLY overwhelming, also are you in the work force yet? I kinda wanted to know what the work was like. Is there a lot of creativity or are you just kinda instructed to do some CAD work?

@TamerShaheen3 жыл бұрын
1. Math only matters during school, but after graduating, u barely use the math u learned. So, if u like ME, then just pull through with the university math. 2. To pull through with it, it’s just a game of practice. The more practice you do, the better you will become at it and the easier it will be! 3. In terms of the workforce...it really depends on your role and the company. Some ME jobs just have you doing CAD work without creativity, other jobs have u be creative and CAD ur own stuff (mainly startups and some tech companies). However, there’s also jobs that require u to use ur creatively to problem solve, then u outsource ur CAD to someone else, so u basically only work on being creative and problem solving based on ur knowledge of materials science, manufacturing and solid mechanics.

Mechanical Engineer Ungrad here. I'm 1 term out from my graduation, wanted to add my 2 cents. Tamer, congrats on those grades dude - thats territory that a lot of us never see. Me personally, I just came to realize that I wanted to look back on this time here in college happily and feel like I gained social experience on top of all of the classwork, otherwise you're dooming yourself down a 4-5 year path of depression with no upsides that never seems to quit getting worse. So, I took a job as an RA (fell in love with this job), reduced my credit load and decided to graduate in 5 years instead of the 4 year window promoted by my university, and focused on being a person as well. All that to say, I'm pretty happy with my 3.3 GPA all things considered. And lastly, it is definitely possible to achieve the grades that Tamer did first try, and if I went back and retook a number of my classes, I am certain I would ace many of them. But that's the point I was trying to make to you all here: at what cost. I am thankful that I can say that I woke up most days and was able to still smell the roses through it all. Best of luck to all of you fellow engineers

As a former Waterloo student and also former grad school student in the US and talking to US graduate admissions officers.. EVERYONE that come from Canada should be aware that grades are heavily bell curved.. (ie normal distribution).. as in contrast in the US.. they don't do this in the US (US admissions officers are aware of this practice in canada).. by doing this, you see as what he has described there.. a few students gets in the 90's.. and most of the class is in the 70's (which is a B- or so in canada).. note canada doesn't really use the letter grade system that heavily.. Many schools in the US also only use A, B,C.. etc.. with no intermediate +/- scores.. and random garbage like someone in highschool getting a 7.0gpa.. because they had AP courses.. etc..

I resent engineers because I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering but I can’t get an engineering job due to “poor communication skills”.

I’m a third year mechanical engineering student in Ghana I want to say you did really well attaining such grades For me I also love calculus just like you did by so far my best grades were in Fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and Engineering and Technical Drawing Big ups bro

can you make a list of textbooks and online lectures to learn mechanical engineer at homw, with lab projects list?

Does this branch have alot of maths like electrical engineering and which subjects were the most maths heavy ?
@alfredomulleretxeberria4239 Жыл бұрын
ME and EE make use of a lot of the same math (calculus, probability, statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, Fourier analysis, complex analysis, etc.). You'll see math in just about everything, such as designing mechanical pieces, describing the paths of motion of mechanisms, points of tension and compression in joints, fixtures, describing vibrations, fluids, the dynamics of heating/cooling systems, etc. There is nothing in any branch of engineering which is entirely free from mathematics. The good thing is that there are lots of tables of formulas and programs that you can use to check your work. The bad thing is that you'll often have to check all the calculations by hand in order to know whether you're using the formulas properly. On rare occasions, you might have to code small programs to automate certain tedious computation processes.

I HIGHLY recommend that you map out ALL your classes ASAP. This video is a good start but general education courses in the US take this to a whole new level. As a helicopter parent the idea of just turning my 18 to life sentences (2 daughters) loose in college with my money mortifies me. Anyway I was SHOCKED at the difference in coarse load between my first daughter and my second daughter. The first double majored at UC Davis in International Relations and Spanish AND she got a minor in Education. Oh and she spent a year studying Spanish in Salamanca Spain. Well she graduated in 4 years with no problems except for the little detail of trying to get a job with only daisy majors during the great recession. Well she eventually went back to college and 15 YEARS after graduating from high school she finally finished another BS degree in nursing to get a decent job. Daughter 2 wants to be a mechanical engineer. In the process I mapped out all her required courses and was SHOCKED that it was going to take her 3 years in community college just to knock out all the math, chemistry (1 year needed to transfer to Davis) and physics. The real kicker though was all the crazy ass general education courses she STILL had to take. It is BEYOND STUPID to force engineering students to take absurd courses in gender studies when they already have a sh!t ton of STEM classes to take. That's when it occurred to me that a Daisy major is basically a major in general education which is why it is SOOOO much easier to graduate on time (but without any skills an employer will pay for). All in all it is still much more worth it to take five or even six years to get the engineering degree because you are ONE AND DONE. First daughter ran from STEM classes like the devil running from the cross only to have to bite the bullet later. Kids that don't recognize this early will just hit a wall later.
