About 3 years ago I bought my first machine. After collecting retro video games for 20 years I decided to jump over to pinball. I sold most of my collection and I now have 7 machines. As far as the hobby is concerned, you are forgetting one huge thing regarding younger people. They're may not be many arcades for them, but there are a monstrous swell if leagues popping up everywhere. There are so many more young people playing pinball than you realize.
@redavatar6 жыл бұрын
It's funny because my nephew and a lot of teenagers I know, love pinball machines in a digital form - when we went to a place that had a physical one, they played for ages on it.
@DrewberTravels6 жыл бұрын
17:22 They can't do it because you literally need an inhouse person that can work on the machines when they break down. You have to have access to a cheap supply of parts too. That is very hard to come by.

@Hotshotter30006 жыл бұрын
I played dozens of pinball machines and I have every single pinball table on Pinball Arcade... yeah, I wouldn't pay 50K for this piece of shit, and I agree that it is intensely boring. It's like they contacted Stern and said 'make the simplest possible machine that would fit in the Electromechanical era and just slap our logo everywhere'. Stern has made some insanely creative machines in the past and this must have bored the engineers and designers to tears to make.
@DrewberTravels6 жыл бұрын
11:18 Yes, you need money to play pinball. Not only do you have to buy the machine but you have to be willing to pay to get that machine fixed. There is a giant steel ball flying around in there... Stuff breaks and you have to get it fixed.

I feel very fortunate to live near a "Pinball Museum" that exists in Roanoke, VA. They have a good 50 machines or so (from old to new) that you can play for a flat fee, or with a membership. Every time I go, there's always a few kids in there, which makes me happy.
@deralfenderson6 жыл бұрын
Well, if you'd actually listened to the whole conversation that Pat and Ian had here, you'd note that one thing that's a concern in the pinball world is that not enough young people are being exposed to the coolness and fun of pinball machines. If no new blood comes into that world, it will effectively die off. So, I was just noting that the pinball museum I go to from time to time has kids coming with parents, so it's hopeful. In fact, that museum does programs with local schools to try and demonstrate the science/physics involved in these machines to show how genuinely cool and fun these things are. So yeah... no weirdness. I'm not a pedophile, ffs. I'm helping raise an 8 year old that we take to the pinball museum too.

The Game Galaxy arcade/used game store here in Tennessee has over 100 + pinball and arcade machines available for play for only $5 for 30 mins, $7 for an hour and $10 for all day play, they have two locations one in Goodlettsville and one in Smyrna, so if y'all ever find yourselves in the middle TN area you know where to go to play some pinball. Of course I don't really know of any reason for y'all to come visit TN though.. There aren't any gaming conventions around here that I know of..

They are geniuses at branding. It's just a way to show off superfluous spending. It is peacocking, essentially, and it does serve a social purpose. It's the same reason women like guys who buy them flowers that will die in a week, rather than buying them a more practical gift. Being practical is not sexy.

He commented on the part 2 video that he regrets telling part 2, so I assume he doesn't really feel comfortable doing a part 3. Could have changed his mind tho, idk. Honestly tho the guy he's talking about in the story is clearly not all there mentally, or at the very least is supremely awkward and socially inept, and so I can understand why he wouldn't want to continue to basically make fun of the poor guy for some cringey shit he did years ago. An aspect of the transition of gaming from arcade to home console could be because I felt bad asking my parents for money to play an arcade game and felt bad as a poor kid when a quarter lasted 3 to 5 minutes as a 6-9 year old in the eighties. Pinball was the same, but as an adult I want to own a pinball machine with the understanding that there are actual GOALS to achieve other than not letting the ball fall.
@KeithPhillips2 жыл бұрын
I really loved the Metallica pinball machine when I stumbled across one. That was a table where you could play at least 10-15 minutes (as a novice) somewhat easily and it had a pretty forgiving extra ball feature. Loved it! "I'M F*CKING HUNGRY. HUNGRY FOR YOUR BALLS!"

How are they in any way the same? Supreme is a vapid status symbol, games are experiences. Retro gaming is not considered “cool” by the main stream. Having a shelf full of NES games is seen as “40 year old virgin” behavior, it’s the polar opposite of supreme.

Tron Legacy came out as $4500. $1500 more for a more open playfield and an lcd screen is a joke. And everyone is hiking up the prices, because stern has as well. I saw $2000 em’s listed and $3500 80s machines that aren’t funhouse. I’m waiting 15 years or so when the Pinball craze is over, and scoop up a few tables at prices that they once were.

Not gonna happen, pinball scene is the one thing that won't die. Prices have been consistent since the machines came out. The prices you're coming up with are just inflated ebay prices, nobody is paying that. I've been watching market trends with arcade+pinball for a very long time now. I've been in the hobby for a good amount of time.

@PinBallReviewerRepairs2 жыл бұрын
I wish I was closer to you guys. But that is fixed as I do twitch stream when I repair my pinball machines. And yeah I know this is 4 year old. ;) My streams of pinball are literally get the machine and any time I do work on said pinball machine I will stream it just to show that pinball machines do take awhile to get back to working depending on what needs to be done. Most of my repairs and cleaning of a machine easily are about 60 hours it takes to look over a machine get it cleaned up and repair anything that needs to be repaired. A lot of car people like pinball machines as it is similar to a car both have a lot of mechanical parts and both can be spendy. It is pretty much a passion for pinball enthusiasts to have them in there home. And yes I have a lot of pinball machines in my collection and I am looking to buy a Police Force pinball machine and I almost have enough for it too. The other reason I do the streams is to let the younger kids know that it is more then just flipping the flippers. The newer pinball machines do have game modes where you literally are playing a game on the DMD display and or screen. Some times you are playing a pinball game mode inside of a pinball machine. xD And yep Portland, OR has a lot of pinball enthusiasts in it myself included in that group. It pretty much started as a child going to Games People Play and was like what is this thing I played it and was hooked and pretty much would play pinball the whole time as I was like I do not have this thing at home and I can play video games at home. And my kid self was like I will never be able to have any pinball machines in my house. 20 some years later I have not just 1 but like 8 now in my collection. xD

I just bought my first pinball machine. An almost brand new The Simpsons pinball party, its amazing. I've been looking into getting a brand new Jurassic Park 2019 or Deadpool 2018, but Sterns newer machines are now built very different on a SPIKE system which seems to only benefit STERN by cutting production costs. I don't like this new direction stern is taking with production and it's pretty lame that this supreme machine is just a rehash of spiderman home

It's always amazing to me how people think they can make insular micro economies for customers that probably won't be there five/ten years from now. @TheNuclearPinball6 жыл бұрын
I guess my problem with the newer Stern's is it can be confusing to tell what is going on and all the rules. Star Wars and Gardians of the Galaxy have so may modes you make think you are doing well until you take a look at your score. It seems that they are "virtualizing" the game to save money on parts and toys.

Curious to see what people are paying for these on Ebay, I checked the sold listings myself. I was blown away to see a ton of listings selling the "confirmation email" literally. You read the description and it says, I will print/email you the confirmation email only (which is what you are purchasing). These listings were sold anywhere between $1000 and $14000. I am not sure how many are just being duped into thinking they are actually buying the machine, or if they are shills trolling the auction (which is what I hope) but its crazy...

Most pinball collectors basically rent machines. They buy them, play them and after they sick of them sell them and get another one. Plenty of buying and selling in the D/FW area. Sometimes you get lucky and sell a machine for more then you paid for it but most of the time on new machines you will take a small hit but not much. I have 20K worth of machines and mostly paid for them by buying and fixing old machines. It is an expensive hobby but not as much as it would seem at first glance.
