50+ plant ideas, suggestions and combinations for adding a tropical style look to your UK garden, designing an exotic border or even creating a collection of rare or unusual potted plants for summer colour. I look at the exotic plants that help bring lush greens, bold colour and fast growing structure and height to my Lincolnshire jungle garden. If you saw my segment on BBC Gardeners World then this is an expanded video looking at my favourite and most useful plant ideas for creating a jungle effect here in the UK. I start off with the evergreens, including Trachycarpus palms, bamboo, hardy Schefflera umbrella trees, cordylines and phormiums then move onto the tree ferns and hardy ground ferns that really tie the garden together. Following that I look at the plants I grow for big leaves - the Musa Basjoo & Ensete banana plants, Gunnera manicata, Colocasia & Alocasia plus so many more then move onto the flowers I add for summer and autumn colour - mainly Cannas, Dahlias, Salvia & hardy Hedychium ginger plants.
Helpful care guide videos for plants mentioned below, see more including Trachycarpus on my channel (I can't list them all here unfortunately!):

Thank you very much! There's still room to expand on it with some choice plants but I wanted to cover the basics in one video. If creating a reliably green and colourful garden without much faffing around in winter this is generally what I'd work with but obviously part of the fun beyond that point is really pushing the boundaries of common sense as you know!

Some random plants i love...the Waggy, Fargesia "Gerry", Dryopteris Wallichiana, Tetrapanax "Rex" and... all the rest! ^^ Some great mix of colors in your garden! I wonder if you have set an alternate schedule for Max and Remi to get on your shoulder. Thank you Wayne, yes, definitely going to have our hands full! As for the Paulownia, I might do a vid next year but we'll see. They're generally sown late March onwards so the light levels are good enough, personally I'd keep it in a pot the first year too so it can build up a woody trunk and be kept in a cool greenhouse or polytunnel the first winter before being subjected to it's second winter outside when it's a bit tougher. I'm pleased you enjoyed the Gardeners World section, I hope they feature more exotic style gardens this year!

Nice one, thank you very much. Interesting one, I’m not sure about this year but for next year some Fritillaria and Alium bulbs could definitely bridge the gap. Or potentially some lower growing plants like nasturtium planted earlier on. I guess it depends on the space and soil really.

This is the video I’ve been waiting for you to make, absolutely awesome, George! The only question I have remaining is how close/soon can I plant around the base of a recently planted trachycarpus and Chaemerops? Thank you very much! I generally try to plant more permanent plants around mine at the time of planting but they’re both reasonably tolerant of root disturbance. Just make the smallest hole for the plant you’re putting in as possible but I’d probably do it now.

Hi George, just wondering do you ever have problems with the seed pods from the ricinus and your pets. I started growing them but pulled them up and binned them after reading dogs are attracted to the pods.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stanley, we've never had problems with Max. I don't know if dogs are attracted to them as such but they are toxic and if your dogs nibble at things in the garden then they're probably best off avoided. I won't be growing any this year or will maybe be especially vigilant with Remi being more inquisitive.

Hi, I have a small garden and neighbours. What plants do you recommend that won't spread to next door? Also that don't need taking indoors in winter - I don't have a shed. Thanks 😊

No worries Sarah! A lot of these are very suitable, I’d personally focus on the Fatsia / Trachycarpus palms / ferns etc but I guess it really depends on your garden conditions and the effect your wanting to create 😃

16:27 when the young leaves are dammaged like that, they will be recovering after some weeks or not ? Cause i just bought a Scheflera.Taïwaniana and it has this kind of fresh weird leaves
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I’m not worried, they’re just opening out and it’s hard to tell if it’s a bit of wind damage or just the leaves’ natural crinkling. They’ll look better as they open up 👍

@@GeorgesJungleGarden another question, why you don’t present Borinda Papyrifera ? The big blue clumper ! Cause in my case I need a wind breaker but Classic fargesia are to small and i don’t wan’t to put a rhizome bareer, i want free bamboos !

Are these plants also hardy enough for Germany? It's not as cold in England, isn't it?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi, I imagine there’s colder and milder places in both countries but a lot of these plants should grow just fine. I suspect some of Germany gets colder winters so it’s maybe a good idea to see what other tropical style and exotic gardeners in your area get away with growing 😃

What are your minimum temps there?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 7 ай бұрын
Hi, it varies really but a normal winter has minimums around -5/6 degrees Celsius so around a zone 8 potentially. Obviously it's more nuanced than that and there's still the potential for a spells of significantly colder weather.

I read gunnera tinctoria is listed as invasive and forbidden inbetween. No clue about gunnera manicata.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi Wiltrud, that’s correct but no issue with manicata here. Unfortunately most of the plants sold as manicata are actually tinctoria though!
