Correction request: statue of liberty is in New York. It is in new jersey waters, but much of (but not all of) the island is a New York enclave.
@eddiejc1
@eddiejc1 Жыл бұрын
It all goes back to negotiations between the colonies of New Jersey and New York about the Hudson River border. NY wanted all the islanfs, and NJ didn't Nats long as they had the right to build ports on their side and freely navigate the river. That's why despite being injured waters, Liberty Island belongs to NY. However, when NY or the federal government dredged the river to make Ellis Island bigger, guess what side of the river they were dredging? NJ, and the Supreme Court ruled that extra land belongs to New Jersey, so that particular island is split between the two states.

That's a good correction. However, it requires a correction of its own. All of Liberty Island is in New York (despite the island being in New Jersey waters, where it is an enclave of New York). The island that is divided between New York and New Jersey is Ellis Island. As a result of a Supreme Court ruling in a case of first impression, the original land of Ellis Island belongs to New York, and the portion of the island that is made of landfill belongs to New Jersey.

Actually, Mandarin being the most commonly spoken language is only half-right, as that statistic only accounts for native speakers, and yes, it is the most common native language. However, English is the most common lingua franca, and is actually spoken by more people in total when you consider second (or third, etc.) languages, with Spanish still being the second most spoken regardless of which metric you use.

@@et76039Mandarin is only spoken more by people, as a first/native language. So English is 3rd among first languages. However, when you count how many people speak English as a second or third language, their are more people who can speak English. When it comes to English speaking people, when they learn a second language, it's often Spanish, French, German or other European languages. It's not often they learn the same language as each other, and less often they learn Mandarin. Yet larger numbers of people around the world learning English as their second language. There are more Mandarin speaking people, who also know English, than the other way around. In China, there are 300 million-400 million people learning English. That's learning English, if they succeed that will significantly increase the 30-40 billion that fluently speak English. Where there only 25 million people outside of China, that are trying to learn Mandarin. Also, many people who speak English as a second language, actually use English more than their native language. There are 1.5 billion people who speak English as a first and second language, whereas only 1.2 billion speak Mandarin as their first or second language. So English is more widely used geographically and in population.

The Statue of Liberty IS in New York. And that’s coming from a New Jersey resident. Liberty Island is an exclave of New York, and therefore a part of New York, drspite being in New Jersey waters. However, Ellis Island is mostly a part of New Jersey. This is because Ellis Island was also a NY exclave. However, NY wanted to expand the island and turned the island into the shape it is today. Then NJ sued NY. (Which I’m pretty sure is unconstitutional). Why? Because New York was illegally invading NJ by expanding their island over NJ waters. Consequently, the expanded part of the island was gaven to New Jersey, while the original island shape was still part of NY.

0:52 is wrong: the Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island which is an exclave of New York entirely surrounded by the waters of New Jersey. Part of Ellis Island is a similar exclave, except that it is mostly reclaimed land (that is, extending the island by filling in the surrounding water with rocks and sediment), and the reclaimed land is part of New Jersey.

Totally correct. Wikipedia: The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island, federal property administered by the National Park Service, located within the territorial jurisdiction of the State of New York. A pact between New York and New Jersey, ratified by Congress in 1834, declared this issue. There was some movie in the 90s that a couple is looking off a ferry at the Statue of Liberty and the guy says, "Most people think she's a New Yorker, but she lives in Jersey." I have no idea what movie, but the clip appears in a KZbin video about the Statue of Liberty, where they also point out that the movie is wrong and Liberty island is part of New York.

2:59 the Missouri River is just a part of the Mississippi River system, so it’s still technically the Mississippi. 3:09 Sources disagree on this, but I’ve found that generally, most reliable sources do rank the Nile as longer than the Amazon. @alastairlong4444
@alastairlong4444 8 ай бұрын
When it comes to river length it all depends on how you choose to measure it. If going by main steam then the longest is the Nile, but if you go by furthest tributary then it is Amazon. But you can also measure by total length of connected flowing water (actually a river or stream not just a swamp or glacier) which actually, due to a quirk of geography, is the Mississippi/Columbia River since they are connected by Two Ocean Creek which splits in two, with one half eventually going to the Columbia River and the other half eventually going to the Mississippi. Effectively combining their lengths when measured by connected flowing water. It’s the only place in the world that does this that is currently known. This is why it’s almost impossible to say what the “longest” River in the world is, since that measurement can change dramatically depending on how you measure it.

One thing you should emphasize when it comes to maps is all countries are larger than they really are closer to the poles due to the Mercator projection. I remember looking at Antarctica on the World map in elementary school, and it looked like the largest landmass of anywhere else. It's just how countries closer to the poles on both sides are drawn.

I'm 34, & study stuff like geography every week; geography was one of my subjects like math when I went to school. I have read lots of books, checked lots of websites, watched lots of videos, & +80% of my family, friends, & myself know English is the most-spoken language on Earth, that Spain is a country in Europe, that Spanish is the official language of Spain, & lots more. According to Ethnologue, English is the most-spoken language in the world including native and non-native speakers. Like Latin or Greek at the time, English has become the world's common language. It is the default language in international business, tourism, technology, and much more. I believe that the said Spain 🇪🇸 by accident when they meant to say Spanish. They probably did that by mistake for Spain and Spanish start with the same first 3 letters, like French & France, English & England, Chinese & China, Portuguese & Portugal, Japanese & Japan, Russian & Russia, & more.

This is a good and helpful and I enjoyed it but I still found some mistakes in the video: 1. Switzerland technically doesn't have a capital since the title of capital city was never assigned (7:13) 2. Ethiopia was colonized by Italy in WW2 for 5 years so the only non-colonized country in Africa is Liberia which you didn't also include (4:33) 3. English is the most spoken language with 1.4 billion speakers and Mandarin Chinese has 1.1 billion (5:36)

0:55 That is leaving out... a *lot* of information there, dude. Tecnically yes, Liberty Island and Ellis Island are in the territorial waters of New Jersey. It was a compact between New York and New Jersey in 1834 that properly defined the water border betweeen the two as existing straight down the middle of the Hudson River and giving a large chunk of the Upper Bay to New Jersey - however the same compact specified that Liberty Island and Ellis Island would remain part of New York's territory despite being in the territorial waters of New Jersey (and this was further complicated by the expansion of Ellis Island through land reclamation - the original area of Ellis Island is still part of New York, but all the expanded territory of the island is part of New Jersey because it was reclaimed from New Jersey waters. Basically, the Statue of Liberty is on an island that is an Exclave of New York, and and to say it's not part of New York because the island is in New Jersey waters would be like giving Spain's Canary Islands to Morocco because they lie within territorial waters for Morocco, or Gibralter to Spain because it's right there surrounded by Spanish Territory.

I was surprised that Ecuador uses the $US. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember that Holland was only part of the Netherlands. I’m pretty sure that the reason some people think that Canada is the largest country in area is because it used to be the second in size to the USSR, and assumed that after the breakup of the USSR, Canada would claim largest country status, when it actually became Russia.
@gaedingar9791
@gaedingar9791 8 ай бұрын
I have wonderes how you get that idea. But your explanation makes actually kind of sence. So, I am probably too young to make that mistake.

And here we have yet another failure of the Argentine educational system. Australia is a continent. Oceania is a region, not a continent. A continent a land mass and ocean is not land. This is defined by professional geographers and accepted by their international association. It has been for centuries. It is not up to anyone's personal interpretation. But of course Argentinians seem to have a record of not understanding geography, what is where, and who it belongs to.
