First of the Aussie content. This was a warm-up spin for what was to come. The hardest I've ever pushed myself on a ride. Lack of sleep, crashes, headwinds. Eeesh. Smash the thumbs-up if you like this story-telling format of video. I also totally forgot to mention that I was splashing water in my face whilst riding to stay awake before that second nap. Messed up lol.

I grew up in Ballarat and now live in Melbourne, so it's funny to see familiar terrain. The Pentland Hills are pretty formidable on a bike, especially in the heat. I'm surprised you did this trip in February - it's not exactly cold weather then!
@josephxkendrick5 жыл бұрын
At least it wasn't as hot as it is now! Went across Nullarbor then along the coast to Sydney and up to Cairns in March-April. I think the hottest day was maybe 35C passing Yalata. And then did Cairns-Darwin-Perth in July-August. Got pretty chilly in the deserts at night on the last stretch, especially heading back down south.

Amazing ride. I'm impressed. But tell me; did you really only expend 13835kj? I calculate that to be just over 3000cal, barely more than you would use in a normal day. Or have I got that wrong? All the best, anyway.
@josephxkendrick5 жыл бұрын
It works out at about 3,300kcals - however that is just an estimation that the Strava app generates based on my weight, distance and elevation gain, I think. I don't believe it takes into account wind, other weather, tiredness, waiting time and probably not even basal metabolic rate. I don't have a heart rate monitor or power meter but both those things would make the calories burned a bit more accurate. If the energy shown is additional energy on top of basal metabolic rate then it would give a reading closing to 10,000kcals which would probably seem right for that distance and time spent being alive - although that headwind was killer.

@waisinglee15095 жыл бұрын
@@femmy5400 One of the reasons to go on long rides is that you can eat whatever garbage you want and your body will just burn it off. No lasting effects. My good and bad cholesterol levels are both below normal and a top surgeon declared me "Superman fit" last year. Haha

Ozzy servos and road houses very rarely have anything fresh to eat. Maybe tinned fruit if you are lucky.
@josephxkendrick5 жыл бұрын
Morale boost, calories per gram, calories per volume, calories per $, lack of options in outback servos / roadhouses. I wish I could have had date & hemp seed smoothies at roadhouses but I was lucky to find anything vegan at all, tbh! Probably could have made me faster and recover better but it's just the way it is. I actually got into the habit of eating junk food prior to the race across Australia to prep my body for this reality. Eating super 'clean' and then suddenly switching to chips, crisps and soda would have probably hit me harder.
