Great tips. I have had some rough dnfs in the past due to injury but mostly the number one thing I always need to tell myself is RUN YOUR OWN RACE. I have tried pushed way too hard at the beginning of races and it always comes back to haunt me. This year my goal is to run the first 75% of race at an easy pace, not putting so much pressure on outcome, then at 75% see how I feel and then decide if I want to push the pace.

I realised after many unwise decisions that the people I raced past in the early phases typically whizzed by me looking a lot more fresh when I had started to fatigue and drift off pace. I love the idea of 75% and then deciding from there. I had much stronger training runs at 50k than I’ve ever had in race conditions and that’s because I was training alone with nobody for my brain to focus on overtaking!

Thanks for the tips 👍🏻 Not doing a 50 miler but 40 for charity over extremely hilly terrain in August. My longest run by far!

Good video. First 50 miler this coming weekend. On forest trails and no major hills. 10:42 I think you meant your mind will give up before your body does? Your body is capable of a lot more so you need to adjust your mindset.

Thanks for the tips, I am running my first 50k ultra in June. Race to the King 50k. I will have run 3 road marathons at that point but I have not done much trail running. After my marathon in April I plan to swap over slowly to trail running to build the strength and confidence before running the race. One of the reasons for doing a 50k is that they are normally trail races and I would like to take in the world around me rather than hammering myself for 26 miles.

That’s exactly why I’m unlikely to go back to marathon running, unless it’s to tackle a PB effort. I’ve found a lot more enjoyment on the trails and being able to take in the environment around me. The North Downs Ridge 50k last year was a lot of fun and quite a few people I ran with were tackling the distance for the first time. You’ll be absolutely fine transitioning over

Check out your ultra course and see if you can mimick the hills and elevation during training ,it works for everyone

Great video. Just subscribed. I'm training for something called a Double Everesting later this summer. It's not a traditional ultra (more just a straight vert challenge), but it will likely take 48 hours or more. Love the advice on making your kit second nature. I need to feel comfortable in it and know how everything works and where everything is. Thanks for sharing!
@DanRuns

I’ve heard of that but man, what a mighty challenge that will be! Do you have to carry the full kit the entire time or is there a drop bag scenario? That sounds a real blast though. Will you be documenting the day by filming?

@@DanRuns Good point. Because I'll be back down the hill every hour or so, I may not need to carry much at all. It's not a formal event, but I'll have a crew at the base of the hill so I can leave supplies there. Thanks again for the video.

@@mid-lifechallenge I’d be considering just a waistband with essentials, a handheld water bottle and leave the rest

@Dan Runs Thanks. I'll need my hands free for trekking poles that I plan to use on the ups. I'm trying out a bunch of different setups. I've got four months to nail it down.

Hey Dan , The tips are golden and delivered in a smooth easy to understand segments , thanks for this. The belt in the second half , did you have enough room for hydration, first aid kit, foil wrap and battery? wow

Hey JBS! Thanks for the kind words. I did a vid just before the NDW50 called “Will this gamble pay off” - 15th May 2022. I used handhelds for hydration but I could put a 500ml soft flask in the band itself on a traditional ultra. However with the kid list it took up much of the room in the band.

You’ll love it! If you aren’t going for a particular time then just enjoy the experience. Walk the hills, enjoy the views and take it easy! Fuelling is the most important part I would say, along with dressing for the temperature
