"I've always had my camera, except for shaving in the morning".... GOSPEL! The story of my life as well ever since attending art school in '94. I am still a daily film shooter and now as a high school analog film teacher, I am fortunate enough to be able to pass along the knowledge to our youth.
@mikearnspiger97156 ай бұрын
nice to believe that analogue was with us and I too loved it...but we must move on and embrace all of the art that photography has available...analogue is a past tense...why not daguerre? go way back if you want to embrace the past...

There is something liberating about no need for batteries and charging. It is surprising how much can be accomplished with a roll of 36 analog frames.

Some 13 years ago I discovered his work at a generous exhibition at GOMA (in Brisbane Australia) of some 260 of his works. Photography, films and documentaries. And I still don't understand, nor could I describe why, but his works still move me intensely in 2024.

When you have an innate artistic vision, the medium is truly just that. A medium to express and innovate; Painting, motion picture, music, photography. HCB’s trailblazing vision is one we have been seeing through and will continue to see through for a long time

I just love his reply at the end, "bullshit". What astonishes me is how a single photograph inspires him to photography, Three Boys at Lake Tanganyika by Martin Munkacsi. From time to time I do film photography and I totally respect him bearing in mind, that you only have 36 photographs on a 35mm film roll. That is saying something.

Photography is all about luck. If you invent an image or try to set up a photo, it looks so contrived and the beauty is lost. Carry your camera everywhere, because that luck can jump at you when you least expect it. It can be outside, in nature, in an urban street, at the deli, or even when you step out of your tub and you see your dog starring at you. It can be just your glasses on the kitchen table with the right amount of clutter near it. Doesn’t matter, but the luck must come to you. Don’t think about it being a good day for photography, or a bad day, just go out and wait to see that moment. If you force it and shoot things are random, they won’t be good The photograph finds you, it hunts YOU down, despite what you may believe. I think of photography like baseball. At first you have a bad batting average. You swing and miss all the time, you strike out. You can’t swing at everything. The more you look and wait, the more you will get a hit and your batting average will go up. Maybe you will get a home run...one day

Interesting BBC documentary from 1998. Too bad the transfer quality is poor as a great deal is lost as light areas are blown out and darks areas fade to black. That kind of ruins the appreciation of the pictures. Better than not online at all. He didn't pass away until August 2004 (age 95) so this wasn't just old film interviews put together. Amazing how one photo by Martin Munkacsi, Three Boys at Lake Tanganyika, changed his life, and street photography. How ironic the picture is probably the most censored famous photo with almost all published copies adjusted to turn the boys into mere silhouettes, losing all details.
