I'm a retiredIndustrial Designer and I don't comment often on KZbin videos. I have to say that your video is most accurate with regard to the notion that you can use these ideas to inspire new ones. That's exactly how it's done in the professional design world. There is a saying that everything is derivative and there are no 100% unique ideas. Designers use mood boards, reference images, and even other designs to help them come up with new ideas. One of the best examples is apple, who if you look into it you find that they have copied very closely many of Dieter Rams designs. And, if you ask him, he will say he's honored by that fact as well. That is how professionals work. Good job with this video.

So true! Same goes for architecture, interaction design, etc. all creative fields. There's no invention/design that is not influenced, inspired by another idea that comes before it. Usually it's an amalgamation of ideas that creates the best products..

I disagree. He should proofread his work before he posts it. Just look at 8:45. That's literally a wall mounted dildo, not a towel hook. That mistake will probably demonitize his entire video... He claims he would rather get something posted than nothing at all, but those are not his only options. Not to mention this video wont be able make him any money now, because of the dildo, so is it really better than nothing? If he had simply taken 10 minutes and rewatched his own video just once he would have noticed the oreo is a reeses peanutbutter cup and that the towel hook is really just a sex toy. Don't congratulate people for half assing things or they will just keep half assing them. He needs to actually try.

"Innovation" requires a step change from the last thing. "Inspiration" means using something as a starting point. Copying someone else's work and customising it with someones name is neither of those things. You should still check the license of the thing you are 'copying'. If you want to upgrade or change the thing, technically that's a "remix" Most things have terms that limit commercial or remix use, and just because you built it in fusion, does not make you immune from the copyright police. Please don't take this a me hating on you, just please be respectful of the original creators intent.

I think you might be too protective without being aware of how copyright works. Copying someone else's work is not okay when it's an art, but lets be real, most of the things here are functional in design and just slight changes are in most cases enough for no legal implications unless the designer has a patent. Real world things after being made by 3D printing are not purely artworks. How else do you get Ender 3s after someone's 20year old patent and iron grip on 3D printer finally expired? Technically, you should respect the artist if he is contributing pure art but please do not confuse a tool they create with art. Someone else may not be able to resell that STL file but any 3D print made from these which are functional are to be protected by patents mostly. This is not a view against thingiverse creators as I do not use any commercial 3D prints in general but to make people aware that you can't just attach a commercial license to everything and let hopelessly unaware people protect you if your work is not meant to be protected. Functional works require patents and if you don want to share, don't do it. Share it because you think its helpful but accept the implications. In that case at least people have incentive to credit you for the work rather than just straight up ignoring you even if they used any part of your contributions if its not patented. All unique art aspects are different than everything stated here however.

Had to comment to clarify something with others negative comments. Depending on the license you CAN sell Thingiverse prints. It has to be licensed correctly however. Look at the license. If it says you can use it commercially as long as you give credit to the artist, I believe its called creative commons Attribution 4.0 now then yes its sellable. If it does not have a license to sell the item. Then THEN you better not sell it

If you are downloading from Thingiverse, which is not copyright protected, and you donate ti the designer, are you still considered stealing or taking someone’s design and making money off of it? @richard3365
@richard3365 9 ай бұрын
Kinda surprised nobody bothered to answer you in over a year. The printer will need "firmware" which it should already have installed (and it's normally a major pain to make any updates or changes) ... as for the stuff to turn the models (stl) into something the printer can recognize (gcode), that's called a slicer (as in, it slices the model into pieces and tells the printer how to make each piece stacked on top of each other) and it runs on your computer... usually also requiring a SD card reader (and SD card which may or may not come with the printer) to transfer the files. There are many free slicers: Cura, PrusaSlicer, SuperSlicer, OrcaSlicer (I'm noticing a pattern here) are the most common for FDM (melt the plastic and squish it out like a glorified caulk gun), and Lychee and ChituBox (free but with paid-only features) are common for resin printers.

@@hacklabdesign word of caution with PETG... it sticks like CRAZY to my Prusa smooth build plate. I'm waiting for the textured build plate that is appropriate to PETG...Yup, I damaged my smooth plate :( But the PETG prints came out AMAZING! I think it is better than PLA so far (noob here).

8:45… umm… 😧 Excellent video, but you may want to edit out that time stamp - I know had to have been an honest mistake (hint: it’s upside-down)

so should I flip it, or remove it? It looks sturdy enough to be useful. I realize it's not appropriate. Thanks Brenda.

I agree with Chippwalters comment below. You have done a great job to encourage other to look at ideas and try to improve them with their own ideas. Good job.

Maybe useful and kinda important to tell people to use food safe filament and a cleaned printer if you make stuff in contact with food?
@henriklagercrantz

Is there such a thing as ”food-safe” filament? I think resin might work to be food safe if its properly set but filament? You would have to bake it or seal it with varnish perhaps? Still not totally safe though, things easily grow on this. A cookie cutter could be used as a “single-use” item perhaps.

@@henriklagercrantz Food safe 3D printing filaments include PLA, PP, co-polyester, PET, PET-G, HIPS, and nylon-6, as well as some brands of ABS, ASA, and PEI. Having to run parts through the dishwasher rules out PET, nylon, and PLA because these plastics soften and distort around 60-70 °C. For applications involving hot liquids, co-polyester, High Temperature PLA or PEI are most suited.
