As you all know, it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten a new bike, so when The Pro’s Closet reached out and asked me if I’d like to pick any bike from their website to ride all season long and make some videos about my experience, well… I had an easy decision! The tough decision? Just which bike should I pick!?

The Kenevo SL is such a fun bike. I was riding the shop demo most of the winter. Felt so good, as I already had an Enduro, but, dang, smile on your face any time you hop aboard. You'll be stoked on that bike, especially because you can ride with people not on e-bikes and it still feels like a regular bike once aboard.

I have MS and am >60 yo. I started Mtn biking in 1986 and it's been a huge part of my life. My right leg fatigues way quickly now in my hip flexor and hamstring due the nerve issues. It got so I was too fatigued to unclip and put my right leg down when needed and riding became dangerous and scary. Plus I kept falling over when trying to stop. 😞I have been on an ebike for 2 years now. It's gotten me back out riding regularly in a way that I could never do anymore on my acoustic bike. More often, more miles and more fun. Safer too. A few years ago I saw a TGR movie profiling pro racer Paul Basagoitia who had a devastating spinal injury. He said that he was incredibly angry with biking after the accident and never thought he'd be on a bike again. Then the film showed him ripping up the trail and jumps on a pedal assist ebike in Crested Butte. He said that that was the first time that he felt like himself again since the accident. I wasn't angry at biking but I was angry at my body and now being on an ebike I know exactly what Paul meant. I feel like me again. I live in Summit County CO and there is huge anti ebike sentiment here. It sucks to feel ostracized by the community that I felt so much a part of before. I am so glad to see so many positive comments about e-biking and no haters. And to the guy on the trail who was screaming at me to "get out of here" and then told me he knows that he'll be on an ebike one day. I need it now and the "rules" need to change. Here's hoping that people start to come around and see that EMTB's are still bikes..... just better!!!

As a Veteran with knee issues, these lightweight eMTB are giving me hope I'll be able to ride again after a decade plus. I'm glad someone of your influence is giving positive feedback. I can deal with the eMTB haters, but not having many places to ride is the main issue preventing me (well, aside from price). At the end of the day, that bike isn't much heavier than some enduro bikes 36-38lb. The whole weight doing more trail erosion thing is BS anyways because someone on a 10lb lighter bike but 10lb heavier than you is putting the same loads on the trails.

I always reserve my judgement on eMTB's for cases like yourself; they provide an opportunity to keep people in the sport and I will say that as eMTB's are getting more popular in my own area, it's mainly been individuals like yourself using them. I don't need one yet, but I don't want to rule it out for the future.

I was going to joke to Alex and say he switched to the other side but I can't. It makes me so mad when someone with a ebike catches disrespect. You ride on brother and don't let anyone discourage you. And thank you for my freedom
@SuperGoforitall
@SuperGoforitall 10 ай бұрын
eMTBs have benefits for reasons you've mentioned and I don't place judgement on anyone who rides one. However, I think for the trail erosion argument, eMTBs still have the potential to cause more erosion, but not because they weigh more. For instance, a trail system that I ride has a big climb before any descent can be made. On my regular enduro bike, I can only make that climb once or maybe twice then I'm done. I've seen an increase in people riding on those trails in the last few years and most people have eMTBs. Some of the guys in good shape can cycle through 2-3x as much as I can with the help from the electronic assistance. The trails have become noticeably more rutted and the trail no longer looks like a single track, which is unfortunate because it's also a walking trail. So, I don't know if there's a solution to this, but I guess if it were up to my suggestion, I would recommend that people either be mindful of the amount of times they ride a trail or if they are physically capable, maybe they might consider riding a regular bike

@@SuperGoforitall Hey I don't mean to butt in but they can slow down before a turn and stop dragging the brakes. I'm seeing a lot of that. I ride with a fella that rides an ebike because he's all busted up from his day's riding MX and I'm fine with it but more focus needs to be put on the correct style of riding, I used to ride dirt bikes and I ride my MTN bike in a total different way. Those riding ebikes because of health reasons might can't do much trail maintenance but someone able to work needs to get with the trail maintenance crew and sweat out the erosion problems where riders come into a turn to fast and hit the brakes. My buddy now knows the trail and hardly ever hits his brakes unless it's to wait on me 😃. Anyway just letting off some steam. Later my friend

So happy to see that you're supporting the existence of ebikes on the trails. I'm 72 years old and I have been riding mtb since 1987 and I did quite a bit of racing when I was younger so I'm familiar with "acoustic" bikes. I bought a Specialized Turbo Levo last year so that I could ride longer and further and I love it (I ride the local trails at least 3 times a week). I will say that mountain biking seemed like a true brotherhood until I got my ebike. Most of the folks on the trails are friendly and interested in my bike but there are definitely hard feelings from quite a few riders who have something against ebikes. I don't understand what the beef is, aren't we all out there to have fun? I have had some surgeries and I have some of the challenges that come with old age such as arthritis, I wouldn't be out there enjoying the trails without the ebike. To those of you who don't approve of ebikes, lighten up and enjoy the entire mtb tribe!

Nice choice for your riding needs. I switched to an EMTB after breaking my back a few years back. It really aided in my recovery. I watched your video recently on the kind of workout you get on an EMTB. It looked like you pushed yourself on the ebike no differently then you did on your analog bike. I do the same. The difference is that my speeds, distances, and climb difficulties increased. I ride for a fitness, and fun benefit. That does not change from analog to EMTB. What ever makes others happy is up to them. I like my EMTB as it increases the fun factor on my rides. The more fun I have, the more often I end up craving a ride. For those that don't want an EMTB, ride an MTB. They are both amazing and a great excuse to play on a bike like we did as kids. It's a win win. Live to love. Love to ride, encourage others to find their stoke .

Let the haters hate…I used to be one of them -now I have shifted and changed gears! Some people ride bikes for exercise, some just for fun, some a combo of both. I fall into that last category…but sometimes I want to just maximize the fun part. So I shuttle, or go to a lift access park, and of course now -we can ride an e-bike! Flew to Bentonville, rented regular bikes for two days, and e-bikes for two days. When I got home after riding the e-bikes…I was just as tired because I rode more than double the distance and maximized the fun! 🤘 It will be fun to see this type of content from someone I have been following for years!

Your review is on point. I rented the same bike on a visit to Innerleithen Scotland last month and the bike was amazing on the super steep wet trails there. The additional weight definitely get you moving down hill faster but i mostly love the planted feeling you get from this bike. All that extra weight is low on the bike so it adds stability and climbing is a dream. For a reference point, I rode for 5 hours and just had about 12%-15% with the backup battery, which I strongly recommend. You mentioned riding on tight trails, I’d say Innerleithen has some pretty tight trails and the bike did well. For a reference I normally rode an Ibis Ripmo, so I’m used to a slightly longer bike. I live in Central NC now, ’d probably buy this buy as my everyday rider if I lived in Western NC and EBike laws here would catchup with the rest of the country. Thanks for another great video, keep them coming!

I ride an Ibis Ripley for mountain biking, but I also did a lot of road riding on a Giant Defy Road Bike. Funny thing is, I'm not as young as I use to be (like I was when I rode a lot back in the 1990's) and I found myself not able to keep up with other bikers more than half my age. So I got myself a Trek Road E-Bike. What I've learned so far about E-Bikes: I'm still getting a great workout, even after a 20-30 mile ride and that I can now keep pace with other riders. I also learned that climbing hills now is a lot easier for this old man (I say that jokingly.) That said, I'm now thinking of purchasing myself an E-Mountain Bike for the same reasons. Thanks Alex for another great and informative video....GET STOKED BRO 😎

I combine my analog trailbike with my downhill ebike on the weekends and I've noticed a great increase on power on the legs, by treating the ebike rides as effectively riding on a resistance roller (since in the UK they are capped at 25 km/h anything past that is you fighting the motor). By pushing my legs on the ebike (which is 25kg vs 15 on my trailbike) my quads have gotten much more fit and when I'm on the analog bike i just fly. You got yourself a very similar combo, plus you will ride a lot more in the winter or on bad weather, as you can get in an out of a ride much quickly and without as much misery. Fantastic choice and great video Alexander!

I think the best way to test the workout portion is to wear a heart rate monitor, I hear chest mount is best, and ride a local trail that has a good climb on your old bike one day and ride the same trail the next day on the e-bike and compare your heart rate and calories burned. You could also use the heart rate monitor to test each of the climbing settings on the bike to see just how much of a difference each setting makes.

Now its my cheat day bike. I train 5 days a week with mixed gym and long rides on my regular bikes and on friday is my cheatday and i ride some downhill trails when my legs are sour from the training before. In my old age its important to me that i keep my edge and create enough strss on my system to stay fit. I wouldn’t like to have only an ebike, it would make me weaker but as a addition to the training its actually awesome.

I have rode a custom ebike for a bit over 3 years now. You definitely get a workout on it but you just get to go a heck of a lot faster doing it. But when I'm on the trail a lot of the time my bike is off because I'd leave who I am riding with in the dust, therefore getting an even bigger workout. but for single rides in the woods, it's great to go 20 miles deep and back whereas on my pedal bike I'd get max 10 miles.

My wife and I both have SL Turbo Levo’s. The extender battery really has a lot of advantages. We travel a lot with our SL’s and it is nice to run off the extender battery first. That way we can just take the extender battery into the hotel to charge it instead of the whole bike. The internal battery takes about two hours to charge and the extender battery four hours. This is my only complaint about the extender battery is why it takes so long to charge when it is 1/2 the size of the internal battery.

wait you cant take the internal battery out easily? that seems like a huge bummer for me.

You could do a comparison of calories burned and HR through out the ride. More recent Garmin devices have e-mtb as an option that takes into account the power of the bike.

Maybe I’m crazy, but ridden has always been about the fun factor first, workout has always been a by product of fun on a bike, so no matter what you ride, ride it for the fun of it…

Love the video, love the bike. I have seriously been considering buying one after years of hip problems. I was riding White Water Center yesterday and just pedaling through the pain. I can’t see myself hanging up the mtb due to physical limitations. E-bike may be the answer. Let me know when you box her up and send it it back. I would likely buy it! Keep posting great content and maybe we will cross paths in western NC someday.

i know it fun and all to tow people. but talking from experience, we have two of the turbo levo bikes and racing around everywhere in turbo mode and occasionally towing people really wears on the motor. we still have the warranty (wich is a lifesaver) because we have replaced the motor 2 coming up on 3 times on each bikes now. because of this we usualy avoiid towing and try to use the less powerfull modes. its hard, especialy after knowing what it feels like blasting UP the trails almost as fast as going down. just keep this in mind when towing people or riding hard for long periods in turbo mode.

I have often thought that with the number of trails you ride that require long climbs that an ebike would be really interesting. Looking forward to seeing what you think of it.

I just bought my second used bike & and yes, buying used can be pretty sketchy and nerve-wracking until you see the product in your hands. With that being said, I use pinkbike. I live in the PNW, so there's a lot of bikes selling out of the Oregon Washington areas that offers awesome deals straight from the seller themselves, and all I have to do is drive a few hours to see the bike in person. I just bought my second bike off pinkbike, a Transition Repeater in excellent condition for under 6,000 bucks with 350 miles on it and new wheels and tires. I know that pinkbike and the pros closet are very different when it comes to selling bikes but no matter what before you buy make sure that you can go through that bike with a fine tooth comb and a magnifying glass👍🏿

Enjoy the e-bike. I have a turbo Levo comp. I can do 4x the laps I could on my hardtail analog. Never going back. If you ride for the rush of downhill there is nothing better. Laps after laps after laps

The only thing i dislike with an e-mtb is the prices. Some days it would have been nice to have one for the climbs. Some days you want to climb without assist and having one of each could have been fun.
