50-play Super Times Pay Video Poker at $30 Per Spin

Steve Bourie, from the American Casino Guide book, and his wife, Michelle, show video from one of their video poker sessions at the San Manuel Casino in Highland, California in July 2021. They were playing 50-play, 10-cent, 9/5 jacks or better, and they were also making the Super Times Pay bonus bet. They were making max bets of $30 per deal: 50 hands at 60-cents per hand (50-cents for the base hand, plus 10-cents for the Super Times Pay Bonus). The starting balance on the machine was $1,000.76.
NOTE: Steve and Michelle normally don't play video poker with the Super Times Pay feature because it adds a lot of volatility. However, we were willing to make the extra bets to, hopefully, show some exciting video. During Steve's narration, he made a few errors where he miscalculated the minimum return on a winning multiplier because he forgot that they were making an extra bet for the Super Times Pay feature. A graphic is shown in those instances to correct his error and give the correct information.

I know in the earlier videos you made, you said video poker has better odds because it involves some level of player skill in poker knowledge and strategy. But judging from seeing even this poker machine, I see absolutely no difference between regular slots and video poker. Infact I think it is more of a risk to play video poker because you can make obvious mistakes and oversights due to fatigue. The amount you were betting, I think that you would have gotten much bigger wins on a regular slot machine on those bonus wins.

I have no experience in video poker other casual play. I see you hold a lot of low number pairs hoping to get 3 or 4 of a kind or two pairs. And you ignore the flush or straight draws. Is it better to hold pairs than to go for flush or straights?

double super times the pay is ok. but i hate regular super times the pay. multipliers dont come often enough. and when they do they are mostly 2x - 4x.

One of my favorite games to play is Double Super Times Pay Poker. I was wondering if the casinos can set the multiplying RNG to go off more or less often? Or is the RNG for the multiplier set the same on every similar game from the factory?

So not really, that game is real hard to find near us. The best we have is Illinois deuces and even that is rare. And on top of that, Steve doesn't especially like volatile games like that, he usually sticks to JoB but I (this is Matt) convinced him to play this while he was in California because I thought it would make a good video.

First rule of video poker is always go for Royal flush. @ 3:00 you had 24569 said you had nothing. Had gut shot yet drew 5 cards...later you had 44 10s Js Ks and held 4 4 should have kept the spades for Royal...

With the 24569 we made the correct move by throwing it all away. Basic strategy says you never go for an inside straights with all low cards. For that three card royal you mention, I can't seem to find that hand. I did see a hand with a pair of 4's a bit later, but it didn't have those other three cards you mention.

OK. I thought you said four to the royal in your first comment. So, my mistake, you are correct. We did have three to the royal. However, we also had a pair of kings, so the hand was played properly. If we had four to the royal we would have thrown away the pair of kings and gone for the royal. The expected value (EV) of keeping the pair of kings is 7.683 coins, while the EV of keeping QH, KH, AH is 6.758 coins. There is always only one mathematically correct way to play your hands in video poker and we played ours correctly in that situation.

I understand watching your bankroll. But, when you played the full hundred play, it was 25$ because it was nickels. You dropped it to 50 play, but are playing dimes which is $30. The extra 50 hands at nickels would seem more productive. I get that it is volatile, but a winning hand with a multiplier could knock it out of the park. If its cold, walk away. 😳Gambling.

We don't have the budget to play that game at 100 hands on every spin. The expected loss would be about $1,000 per hour and that is more than we want to budget. At 20 hands per spin the expected loss is still $200 per hour. but that is within our "comfort" range.

Why is this a bad game? This is one of the better games you can play in a casino. 9/5 jacks pays back 98.45% with optimal strategy and it goes up to 98.72% with the bonus active. Also, it was a 10-cent machine, so a 9/5 pay table was pretty good for that low a denomination.

He gets dealt an ace king and a jack and he saves the king and jack what a dope. He lost over 700 bucks. When he had 10 times multiplyer he got dealt 3 diamonds. And saves a face card another dumb move. Trusting a computer to give you money in itself is a fools sucker bet.
