You can whine and cry but Nigeria threw 50 million people in to poverty in a year and a half. The food and petrol prices have skyrocketed and Nigeria remains one of the poorest countries in the world with very poor tax collection. Go and view how much tax each country collects from its citizens. You will be shocked. The Nigerian economy is also not diversified and over relies on oil as the only source of revenue. It's ICT infrastructure is still very poor and is being developed by South African companies like MTN. It's banking infrastructure is also very poor and is also being developed by South African banks like Standard Bank. It's retail sector is also being developed by retailers like Shoprite which are South African and lastly it's Television Media coverage packages is also being developed by Multi choice and DSTV which own GoTv. This is also a South African company.

I am never impressed by the "net worth" or the "GDP" of any country, which is the total value of the pie to be shared by the entire population, nor do I take the "GDP" per head (capita) seriously, until I look at who gets what and how much of that pie. If undergraduate economics serves me well, I know that the Gini Coefficient comes closest to predicting how much of the pie each individual citizen shares, but it is still woefully inadequate. In other words, a country may be the "richest," anywhere but the majority of the citizens may be low-income or poor. It is unbelievable that South Africa, with a population of 62 million, the vast majority of whom are the 41 million dispossessed, low-income or poor is called the "richest" in Africa? If that is not a crisis, I don't know what else it is. How the most unequal country in the world can be called the "richest" at all is incomprehensible! Moreover, the population of South Africa "at risk for poverty" is 55.5%, which is also the highest of all the 54 African countries!

This is misleading. The caption should not indicate as the richest countries in Africa. It should be the largest or biggest economy in Africa because when we talk of biggest or largest economy it does not always follow as the richest economy. Indonesia has the biggest economy in the asean countries but it does not follow that Indonesia is richer than Singapore. When we determine the riches countries, the barometer is the gdp per capita but if we talk of the biggest or largest economy normally the barometet is the gdp nominal.
