Oily car tools will make you go crazy when finishing. Also wax stays at a separate area of my shop. I even wash my hands before working with wood. Finishing sucks and compromising it with stray oils and waxes ain’t worth it. I make sure I have a fridge with at least a 12 pack in it also. Doing this kind of work will drive you to drink.

I have several Palm routers which I use more than the big routers. They are easier to use and most of the time you not taking huge cuts requiring the power of the bigger routers. Most of the big cavities I route the edge of the cavity about a 1/8 or 3/16ths and then use Forstner bits to remove the bulk. Then switch back to the router to finish the cavity. To me using a 3 14/ hp router freehand in an expensive piece of figured wood is a good way to end up with expensive mistakes. I like a router table or your pin router for controlling the high horsepower routers.

I am sure these will come in later episodes but you asked for input. So here are some general shop tools I find useful for guitar building: screw drivers (every size and end type you can get), razor knife, SAE and metric hex wrenches, SAE and metric combination wrench sets, small carpenters square, 6" machinist rule, tape measure, an accurate caliper, reamer, center punch, small hammer (not a framing hammer!), full set of drill bits. I don't even want to get into power tools just about every woodworking power tool in existance is helpful and makes the work easier, faster, and more accurate.

As far as sharpening a dovetail saw, it can be done with jewelers files, but it takes a lot of patience and time! Probably easier to just buy a new one. I’ve sharpened other saw utilizing this method, and it takes a good while, to do it right. Can’t rush it.

Matt, I’ve found the best way to sharpen a handsaw is to have a sharpening service sharpen it for me. They have all of the sharpening tools and make quick work of sharpening saw blades, router bits, hand saws, shaper bits, etc. and for a reasonable price compared to what professional saw sharpening equipment costs ... just an opinion of mine ...

Patting myself on the back because I own the majority of this list after a logical brainstorming session and a trip to harbor freight. I got a workbench and my husband had a bunch of goodies in the cart and the damage was >$500. Also #1 PPE!!! A respirator always beats a dust mask and eye glasses aren't safety goggles. These lessons have been learned the hard way. Question: how did you get started in luthiery? Did you apprentice at all or just dive in? When did you cross over from hobby to business? You know what...I'm getting all Barbara Walter's here. Let me know if you put out a Q&A video or do a live stream for these sort of interrogations 😋

Hey bro love the video.im having a good time catching up on your channel.ill chime in on the nut files,everyone do not waist your money on those nut files from China off eBay.i did and they are not any good.the sizes are not correct.you could probably use them on bass guitars but for regular guitars they are useless.the sizes on them are way off for regular guitar nuts.i waisted my money on a whole kit for doing nut slots and set up stuff from one kit.and it did have a couple of useful things in it but on the whole it wasn't worth the money.on some tools your better off not to waist your time and go ahead and buy from stewmac or some other tool company.but my opinion if stay away from the cheep Chinese tools from eBay.you may get away on some things but tools that you need to be spot on when you build what your building I'd buy from stewmac or some other good repadible tool company.love your channel brother and I loved the episode where you made a guest appearance at maximum guitar works.id love to go to his school and get certified.thats my dream is to get certified and open my own guitar building shop and repair shop in Kingsport TN where I live. Seriously tho - watching your vids has changed my mind about the "value" of a shaper. I dunno if you'll include it as an "essential" because they're huge and (can) cost a fortune, but for me it's my "next buy". Once I started to understand the "cutting physics" of router bits (mainly the shear angle of the cutting edge as it relates to the diameter of the tool) it became clear that having a 2 or 3 inch diameter cutting head (helical no less) was the ultimate path to smooth finishes "off the tool" and near zero tear-out on figured woods and wild grain. I do like the pin router - but I've yet to see one that was in my budget and available floor space. And I had to laugh at the comment about collecting routers. I've got 3 full size for "hand work", another in a table, and a Bosch trim router (which I love for cutting binding channels). One thing I'll mention to your viewers is that you can find a lot of good used tools locally via Craigslist. If you're patient you can find amazing deals - I landed a 16" bandsaw, an 8" jointer, a 13" planer, and an old Delta lathe for a grand just because the guy wanted it gone. It was the start of my shop! And two of my bigger routers came from Goodwill for next to nothing: www.shopgoodwill.com/ (under "Tools" if it's not obvious)
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 5 жыл бұрын
It takes a special kind of tool to be in front of the camera. I think we are getting close to 250 videos now and it's a lot of work to bring these things to fruition even with the low budget stuff we have. The other day I got an email from a guy who wanted me to do videos on using tools "regular people" had. I don't think he was even a subscriber and must have thought that all I have to do all day is make videos. Then there is the guy that is convinced I worship the devil.

good video but, I believe a "back saw" is one that cuts on the Back or Pull stroke as opposed to the Push or Fwd. stroke .............. just sayin' ................... ;-p

A "Back Saw" is a type of saw with a reinforced back edge that keeps the thin blade from being distorted. It can be oriented such that the push or the pull stroke does the cutting

Texas Toast Guitars not sure what you mean by"under advisement" though, i'd imagine that eventually my CA jokes will get old, if not already. haha i wonder how long the low e string on a bass would resonate under water though, I think the lower frequencies would ring longer though. however, it would probably be like 1-2 seconds at most.

before I am a smartass, let me say; GREAT subject I have been waiting for you to cover. Could we safely say that your beloved pin router is necessary if you want to build guitars a little more expediently as opposed to it being absolutely a necessity? And yes: Tightbond..I put that %@@#! on everything. HA! opening paint cans with a sharp chisel? You must have been watching Ms Quibs on her last home improvement project ("HONEY! Don't use my chisel as a can opener...sheesh) Maybe she's a Marine? Guitar Nutz, Isn't that a snack from Freto-Lay? You definitely want nice nuts!

I have to watch myself because I will use the tool in my hand for 5 minutes rather than walking 5 feet to get the right tool. My Beloved Pin Router... the jury is still out on that one I can't decide what to do with it for the list. It was never intended to be 50 tools everyone can afford. But I think I want to keep it off the list for as long as possible. Maybe I'll do a video worth of honorable mentions
