6:28 He's very lucky to be alive. Most people aren't aware of a phenomenon called step potential. When a high voltage line is laying on the ground, the ground around it becomes energized. The voltage present on the ground decreases the further you get from the point of contact. If you take a step within the energized area, the ground beneath your front foot will be at a different voltage than your back foot. The resulting difference in voltage can cause the electricity to travel through you. If you ever end up in a situation like this, keep your feet together and hop away. It's important to know what type of line has fallen. Transmission lines have a much higher voltage than a distribution line. Transmission lines are the ones strung up on the big tall towers. Distribution lines are the ones on top of utility poles that supply buildings and houses with power. You need to be at least 100ft from a fallen transmission line, and 30ft from a distribution line before it's safe to walk again

I have to admit it’s absolutely nuts that we figured out how to manipulate one of the fundamental forces of the universe (electromagnetism) and now we send absolutely insane amounts of energy through a bunch of metal ropes over our heads, and we don’t even notice it. Until something goes wrong. Our entire modern world works because we figured out how to make electrons move. Just imagine what we could do as a species if we figure out how to manipulate the strong, weak, and gravitational force.

Problem in the US is our government/economic policies in doing so, especially given the larger area to cover. Simply put, who’s going to pay? The cul-de-sac behind the house I grew up in, they had way too many homes on one transformer, and that thing blew nearly every time there was a big thunderstorm. I grew so familiar to this sound. Our house sat kind of uphill, and the cul-de-sac was about 15 houses in a kind of basin in the neighborhood, with more houses uphill on the other side of them. So whenever that transformer blew, whenever anything loud happened down there, including the creek overflowing its bed, it echoed so far. Such a distinctive sound.

I don't think I saw any transformer failures in this compilation. Most transformers are oil cooled, and when they burn, they create lots of thick black smoke. 99% of the time you hear an explosion on a power line, it's because a fuse blew. If the arcing stops and starts again a few times, it's because the line has a recloser (An automatic circuit breaker).

This is a reminder that power lines could be insulated but aren't due to cost. I know it's safe usually but lines near or over homes (or connecting to homes) should definitely be insulated. EDIT: They are, I was ignorant when i made this comment

Electricity flows at a rate of 90% the speed of light. Or, in estimates, 167770 miles *per second*. So when you have huge amounts of it on the move and those power regulators start falling apart, things get extremely dangerous very quickly. High voltage or even lower voltages is a thing you don't mess around with, just one slight flinch too close to one and you could see your life end in a blink of an eye. This is why I very much hope the essential personnel that fixes these incidents are very well compensated.

There was no danger, the tree which made contact with the wire, is made of wood, which doesn't conduct electricity. If it were raining, then it would be a different story.

@Grey Webs Yikes, I bet that wasn't pleasant for the person it affected. Especially if it was the first time it happened. And I know it's not the same, but driving when the sun is behind the trees is almost intolerable for me. Which is bad when you live in the rural south, surrounded by tall pines lol. Probably just old eyes...😆. 🌞

@@kellyjoiner4418 100% the flicker of light can affect people. My uncle was a long distance driver for many many years. But eventually he had to have both cataracts removed because of it. But epilepsy comes in different forms. Epilepsy can happen at birth or a trauma. Great talking to you Kelly. It's an issue that not many people understand, because they've never had to deal with it personally. I had many times with my late father it wasn't a pretty sight. But the signs are there 🤞

Lots of handsome arcs there! Ppl doesn't seem to realize the power what's behind those. And that trafo what blew up in Cali.... (about 03:00 in the vid) The fire department clearly had no idea that there is electric fire and oil burning. "hey let's try water, maybe it'll help" Same at (05:00).. "certainly not not a high voltage oil transformer in flames, so its ok to use water"
