Just purchased. Sound & video quality of the GoPro is definately superior, but for my purposes (and budget) the vivitar is going to work. Going on a 4 hour motorcycle run with friends on saturday. Will bring an additional quick charger to be able to continue for a longer duration thanks for all your valuable info. Great review! Love that you contrasted with a GoPro!

What I like about this Vivitar is that it does not have the fish eye effect. On your GoPro if you notice the objects towards the sides slightly bends due to wide angle camera in such small lens. However, the Vivitar regardless to its sound quality and poor stabilization, the vision is less distorted due to the lack of fish eye effect. Wide angle is good for capturing larger areas but the shape of objects is distorted especially towards the sides of the view.

This camera comes with attachments that will work with most GoPro attachments. You can get any GoPro off brand head strap and check strap on amazon at a cheap price. They work very well no matter the brand.

I just bought a 786. My only complaint is that the color is too red on mine. I have a 757 also and the color is more natural with it. The 786 can also be used as a web camera. I never hear anyone discuss that option.

So, I've noticed that my camera (it's the same one you're reviewing) isn't playing sound in the videos, do I have to play the videos on my computer to hear the sounds coming from the video or is there a volume switch i'm not seeing?

It plays sound but it’s very low. Try playing it in your computer. Also if you have the waterproof case on while recording, you have to speak loudly for it to hear you. Without the case it should pick you up just fine.

If it's at all possible could you maybe make a video on how to use the Software? it's saying that, even though my camera is connected to my computer, it's not detecting it and says there isn't one. Pack Alpha Gaming I can’t make a video for you because I have given this camera to a friend of mine. But I normally remove the SD card from the camera and put it in my computer. Open the folder and find my videos on the SD card then play them or transfer them to my editing software. I hope this helps. If I find better information for you I’ll post it here. But I didn’t use the Vivitar program much. I do this same method with my GoPro camera.

Hey I’ve got the dual screen one but I can’t get it to connect. The camera has wifi, I’ve connected it to my phone with the password but then the app just says it’s not connected, therefore it’s pretty much useless cause I can’t get the footage and photos. Any thoughts? Using iPhone. Thanks

If you use it under water you need to have it in the protective case. It does well underwater. Just know that in its waterproof case the sound quality will be poor.

You should be able to press the menu button on the camera to bring up options to switch to photo mode. This link will bring you to the operation manual. It will walk you step by step to the picture mode.

I use Filmora 9 video editor. The vivitar app is horrible in my opinion. If you have a MacBook or iMac, iMovie is good also.

You can download the PDF user manual here. www.manualslib.com/manual/1150427/Vivitar-786hd.html This way you can print it out. But all you should have to do is turn on camera and press the record button. It should automatically start filming. Then press it again to stop/pause recording.

I am an artist and would like to shoot videos from the angle that you did when you were seated talking about the cameras. Can you PLEASE show me at WHAT ANGLE and HOW you had that GoPro mounted to be looking over your shoulders without your head being in the shot? It showed only your hands and not your head in the video which is what I want when I am trying to do my paintings. If you could take a shot of that or do a video on that, I would be SO GRATEFUL. Yes, sorry for the lack of response on this. You reminded me. I actually forgot to comment on this. It is caused by the sun shining directly into the lens. The GoPro camera has better technology and a better lens than the vivitar HD. So this will not happen with the GoPro. The Vivitar cannot handle the direct sunlight like the Gopro can so it causes spots to show in the film footage like that. I hope this helps you.

It should turn on right away without the charger plugged in. I’d let it charge for awhile. If you still are having that issue, I would return it.

@@17aant you have to transfer them from a computer. It doesn’t connect to the phone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. So you need to transfer them from the SD card to a computer then from the computer to the phone! I know, kinda annoying. But it’s not a high end action cam.

Try making sure your SD card has been formatted. You should be able to navigate through the settings on the camera and format it. Just know that if you do it. You will lose any data on the ad card.

I tried to get drivers from vivitar, and they said you have to download them from a windows diver add and it will fix your problem. when you go to them then they want more money to get the fix so you can put your videos on the pc for editing software. after many hours trying to figure out how to get my videos from the camera to any off my laptops , none of them dose th 786hd vivitar loads up on them. all say error code 403 .. to top all this off there is no youtube people able to fix problem they only do reviews trying to make money and skip the issues with this video cam and they do it because they don't know what they are doing except trying to do a review to make money. Oh my goodness...

Well, first off I am sorry you are having this issue. I have not experienced this. Also the person I gave my camera to is a close friend. He uses it to film his runs all the time. No issues. Does your camera have an SD card? Also I can’t and don’t make money on KZbin. I don’t have enough subscribers. Plus making money on KZbin is not my purpose. I make videos for people to watch. If I ever get big enough to make money I will. But I can’t. If I had experienced this problem I would have said so. If you have watched any of my others videos I do talk about problems I’ve experienced if I do experience problems. I’m honest as can be in my videos. I do appreciate your comment. And trust me, if I had this issue and had a way to fix it you would know. I think it’s a shame that Vivitar won’t make good for it or Walmart! That’s bad bad bad business. Thank you for exposing an issue. I hope more people read this comment. Maybe you should make a video about this issue.

The Under Ground thanks I appreciate this, really I do. It’s still a shame I think that Vivitar will not handle this issue with you in the right way. You shouldn’t have to take the card out but that’s what I did when I owned it. That’s my friend does that I have the camera too. I’m just so use to taking the SD card out of the camera because I always did that with my GoPro. Please let me know if it works for you!

IF YOU PUT MORE THAN 32 GIG CARD DO NOT FORMAT IT. It will turn your card into a 32 gig. You can get all storage back by formatting and repartitioning. Once you do, DONT FORMAT FROM THE CAMERA!

In the video i just watched, when looking at the sun, the vivitar cam showed a black spot where the sun was pose to be... did anyone else see that or is it a ufo?

Gwen Dunn I is what you said it is. The sun caused a black dot. I noticed that but forgot to mention it in the video.

I noticed that too. Whatever it is it seems to be spinning and hovering. Apparently he probably didn't notice it with his naked eye and the camera picked it up. Strange
