This is why I love Steve Lav. Some would look at a 50 year old gas boiler and immediately yell REPLACE. Not Steve. Well done.

Run it till the cast sections leak baby! The old Pennco in my own house was 40 years old and working great until the floods of Sandy took her out. I replaced with a cast iron Slant Fin, been almost ten years and no issues. No high efficiency junk here mama!

Kick that can down the road for another 1,000 miles Steve! 👍👍. Breaks your heart to see Miss Molly’s face when she realizes that you’re not getting back in the truck 😢

Here is a tech tip. With the water feeder on "fast fill" close the purge drain valve to build pressure. Once pressure builds on the boiler to 25 psi open the valve. The added pressure helps push the water through the system. Rinse and repeat until all the air is out.

Steve, always learning something from your video's. You have such experience from over the years !!

Are there any boilers made today that are good enough to last 40 or 50 years? My 1980 Slant Fin is still going at 42 years.

I came to the same conclusion regarding circulator gaskets. I always like the “black” circulator gaskets but about 10 years ago I changed my thinking also. I believe that the “o- ring” circulator gaskets of today are made of better neoprene than the early series were.

Look at the thickness of the flanges on the old and new pumps. Wow!!!

Fantastic Job, Steve! My Oilboiler is 30 years old and still working fine. Original in my house is a gravity heating with a cast iron boiler, burns char or wood. Everything is in very good condition and works still perfekt. My plumber is the german Steve! 😉 Greetings from germany!

My town requires a back flow check valve on the main service line. They install it with their meter. I am surprised they don't require one in the South Boston area...

They give tax credits for wood fired boilers too... its not even greener burning fire wood generates more CO2 than natural gas.
