This year NQCC celebrates its 50th birthday. As an anniversary project, we have collected stories from people who have been involved in environmental activism in North Queensland in the past 50 years.
NQCC was established in 1974. In 1980 plans for a uranium mine were announced for Ben Lomond which is 50km from Townsville and in the catchment of the Burdekin River. In response, the Burdekin Anti-Nuclear Group BANG formed in Charters Towers to oppose the development. NQCC led the case against the mine in the Charters Towers Mining Warden’s Court. And we won - the first time that a mining application had been rejected in a Queensland Mining Warden’s Court - unheard of at that time!
The story is told in these two stories.
