Finally, the summer 5 hours of Japanese a day for the entire summer experiment is over. Although, its time to keep on learning!
I mostly tracked accurately enough, but sometimes forget to start the timer, and comes out that I managed to immerse/study/learn Japanese for around 500 hours this summer!

You inspired me to try this challenge(A winter one instead). So far im one month in it and I already feel massive improvements. It was hard to reach the 5 hour mark for the first couple of weeks but its become easier overtime. Ive been learning Japanese's for a year and half so this was my first time sentence mining but now it feels like second nature. I cant wait to see my progress when im done with this challenge, and the extra time ill get back for other things.

@Hoppitot It's been a few months since I successfully completed the challenge but I progressed so much in those 3 months . I would say in those 3 months I learned more than I did my entire first year learning Japanese. In the beginning of the challenge I would have to stop at every sentence to lookup words, but now things are much smoother as I don't have to pause every 2 seconds. My overall comprehension rate is much higher. I definitely wouldn't say I'm fluent but this challenge really moved me forward very quickly. It taught me how to immerse and just learn better. I'm now two years into Japanese, I study about 2 hours a day and I'm happy at the pace I'm learning.

Just watched 3 of your keyboard videos on your second channel when I found this and this sounds crazy. I've meant to, and did start once, to self learn Japnaese but had to stop due to not having time, and then I never got back into it. But I think I'll watch through some of your videos to see your journey for inspiration and motivation.

You're actually an inspiration Livakivi :) I study anki everyday but need to I need to immerse more! Will get the required tools for it. Also, do you recommend I make my own cards altough I'm already doing another deck? I'm at half of my 2K deck already, but this section is being a bit frustrating. It's very focused on business, I now know many words like 首相、提供、構成、制度、etc, and while I want to learn this, I'm missing a lot of more basic/usable vocab (for me)
@BudgetLivakivi
@BudgetLivakivi 3 жыл бұрын
If you want to, you can make your own cards too, it doesn't really hurt, its all up to you! What you can do as well, is that if you mine a word or sentence, you can quickly check if the core 2k/6k deck already has it, and then just move it into another deck so you could learn it faster and whatnot. Or just create a separate sentence card from immersion, and either delete, suspend, or just hit easy on the card if it comes up in core 2k/6k again.

You've become my favorite youtuber in such a quick period. As someone that is slumming it in N4-N5 level Japanese it's been a great deal of entertainment to see you use the process as a creative outlet. And Terrace House is insanely chill, I used to be such a big fan of it before all the tragedy struck.

Congrats on the effort you have put in. The consistency with anki over the years has allow you to build an enormous base in a efficient way and now, after this challenge every word has been related to so many contexts that you have improved a lot thanks to it. People usually go about it in a very ineficcient way and try to do immersion first, but you nailed it!

That's pretty much what I hoped for as well, I was hoping that after years of Anki, I can "cash in" my vocabulary and get a ton of benefit from immersion in a really short period, and I think that's pretty much what happened.

@@Jon-rz5kz hi, i wouldve been learning japanese 8 months and a half from now but when 2022 (february) started, i had to stop focusing on japanese because i have to study a lot for college this year so since february started i didnt learn anything new, i am just practicing my skills so i dont forget anything (so im still learning by practicing, but just not learning new things because of lack of time) so, i learned japanese for 7 months, and my progression was nothing less, nothing more, it was just like my progression learning english back in 2017 i can watch anime and understand some sentences, i can read manga and read some sentences too, but obviously i cant undestand a whole episode and undestand everything i can pass the japanese N5 without any problems, and if i didnt stop learning new things because of college, i think i could take the N4 test by now too i can read and understand a lot of sentences, if i was teleported to japan i could communicate to "survive" you know lol if you are asking because you want to learn japanese and is curious about the time it takes, dont think much about that, start on duolingo and take notes, if you dont understand something duolingo said, search about that on youtube or google, and after you can start doing anki cards too, you have to make that a normal thing in your day, just like you eat and brush your teeth every day, set aside at least an hour of your day to learn japanese (in the start it will not be a problem, i used to learn japanese 5hrs a day because i liked it a lot) but if you like making goals in time, learn for 6 months and try to take the N5 test and watch some anime episodes trying to understand what they say, and not by reading only the subtitles and your second goal can be 1 year, after 1 year try to take the N4 test and watch more episodes without paying attention to the subtitles

@@qwarty_gd First and foremost I truly appreciate you taking the time out of your day to give me a solid response and with that being said Thank you. I was just curious as to what your progress had looked like and yeah that’s honestly really good I’ve only been studying for around 3 months but when I did start I did exactly what you listed and nowadays I’m usually doing anki learning 15 cards a day while also doing wanikani.
@OpuYT
@OpuYT 3 жыл бұрын
Damn 20 cards per day is really impressive. Usually I dont even get to make this many cards without doing double the amount of sentence mining instead of free flow immersion. How long do your daily reviews take now after going a while with 20? I recently bought a kindle for reading and I love it. Suddenly I'm immersing for 2-3 hours a day with it. It's just so chill to look up words with custom dictionaries and not having to worry about sentence mining while reading because the kindle collects all my lookups and the corresponding sentences by itself and then I just use an Anki Addon to import them into Anki afterwards. It's really amazing how creating cards can break the immersion sometimes when you just want to watch that good episode of JoJos. Also I tried listening to the audiobook of the book I'm reading at the same time while reading. Pausing and Unpausing all the time is a bit of a hazzle but hearing the words out loud makes understanding much easier.
@BudgetLivakivi

My reviews currently take around 60 to 80 minutes, definitely an increase from before, but honestly its manageable. I set all the new cards to appear after all my reviews, so I usually just finish my daily reviews first, then sentence mine, and then do the 20 new cards when all my other cards are done, which makes it much more bearable.

One way of learning a language that I do is to study a text with a audio made by a native and after that I studied the text (much like you do) i go reading the text alongside the audio about 50~100 times, this internalize the words in my mind (even adding almost 20 cards per day on anki it still only takes 20 minutes with a lot less mistakes) and developed my listening capabilities

Also I'm not sure if you've done a video on this before but it would be interesting to see you discuss the various approaches you can take in learning a language (listening, writing, reading, speaking) e.g. I've almost focused exclusively on reading, and am nearly done with kanjidamage after the past half-year and have been doing some grammar, up til around N3 (still not very good lol) I've found thankfully my reading is getting much better and less painful yet listening is incredibly hard and I'm atm trying to skill transfer so that I can recognise the ~8000 words by ear I should supposedly know by now. Because I don't really have many defined outcomes it's a lot easier a prospect to just focus in on one thing, but it would be interesting to see particularly through the lens of Japanese which distributions of time to each of the 4 categories could be optimal depending on goals/aspirations.
@BudgetLivakivi
@BudgetLivakivi 3 жыл бұрын
Throughout most of my language learning related videos I have said bits and pieces about various different methods, but generally I mostly just talk about my own experience. I heavily focus on input myself (reading/listening), and improving output will take a lot of practice as well, but its better to practice output when you have enough input to recognize your own mistakes, accent and whatever other unnaturalities and stuff like that.

What you've done and the way you've presented how you did it is amazing. I really want to thank you for that. I have a question regarding the anki 2k words deck, how do you "learn" each word? It takes me several attempts to memorise each word but I don't feel like I've learned it, this is then confirmed the next time the card appears in anki and have no recollection of the word. Do you have any tips to really 'learn' the words or is it a matter of just repeating them over and over? Thanks, please keep up the great work!
@BudgetLivakivi
@BudgetLivakivi 3 жыл бұрын
I think its totally fine if you don't remember the word next day, as you don't rote-learn words with Anki, so if you forget them the next day its totally fine! Although, I've seen some people who didn't put in enough effort into their reviews, and hit "good" pretty much every time, even if they didn't really remember it, and that ended up making it so that they had hundreds of cards in their Anki reviews that they felt like they had never seen before, which made them quit in the end. So as long as you put in decent effort, are decently honest with hitting again/good (lean towards good more than again), over the long term, should be fine! Cards on Anki are all intended for the long term. If it seems that you can't remember anything anymore, maybe you're taking too many cards for the time being, and decreasing new cards per day can help.
