As you can see in the thumbnail, people even try to bridge with sand, accidently drop their really good items into the void or lava and much more. When you save and quit then come back, the game only remembers your position before quitting, not how far you had fallen. This means that if you save and quit before you are about to take fall damage, you can come back and take none.
