The 22 guy was shooting a more accurate rifle with WAY more consistent ammunition.. Anyone that’s been around Mosin-Nagant shooting surplus ammunition especially knows they aren’t remotely reliably accurate.. Probably the last rifle and ammunition I would attempt it with.. They both have some stones trying with a Nagant. :) It 'aint an F class or PRS rifle (and I shoot F class). The best Mosin ammo for factory is the Russian 182g match, which is hard to find but actually pretty accurate out to 800 yards. The Swiss K31 and GP11 ammo. That would be interesting for a surplus rifle!

Carlie put up a good show. I like watching this and the 1000yd challenge. I've shot similar targets where I live and I find the trick it to have you cross hair at the top of the target and shoot a little low to your aim point. I like it when people will use their turrets to make adjustments rather than just moving their aim point around. So many times you see shooters keep dropping shots into the same point but making no adjustments to the turrets. They obviously get target fixation and don't change their aim point.

visual acuity becomes the biggest issue at 500. The smallest target that most people can consistently aim at is about 2MOA-ish with irons. SOME MAY be able to consistently aim at a 1MOA target with irons, not the average person. So even if the rifle, sights, ammo, and shooter are capable of better than 1MOA at 500, if you can't consistently aim at the target you're just flinging boolots... I was also a Marine and qualed at 500 with irons. Rifle-ammo combo does 2MOA to 4MOA from the bench. 500 silhouette target was about 20" wide AKA about 4MOA.... If you landed a good 1st round center mass, you were rewarded with a 10" white spotting disc, AKA 2MOA. This made the other 9 shots easier because of the 2MOA aiming point. All of this is "battle precision"(in real combat things aren't that precise). Miles and miles away from sub 0.5MOA long range precision match shooting. All those guys claiming they could do it easy because they shot 500 in the USMC were either POGs or FUDDS or both. I love shooting irons, and I love people trying to do this with irons. Hell, if I was within 12 hours of EC, I'd try it. I still think you should do an iron sight version, no challenge money, just fun. Either closer, or with larger targets at 500, smallest target being 1MOA, largest 4 to 6MOA. Maybe a rim fire version at 100 with irons and 200 or 300 with scopes, again, just for fun.

@@kencaton6377 with the Annual Rifle Training (ART) course of fire, the silhouette on the B-Mod target is worth 5 points. The areas to the left and right of the black were worth 4 points. So yes, missing the intended target (a man sized silhouette) close enough could net you 4 points. Of course there were 3 point zones as well as 2 point zones on the same target. @Eggomania868 ай бұрын
Shooting open sights is more of a challenge in my opinion. As comical as it was, I give those guys respect for showing up and going for it. With 7.62x54r and Mosin rifles, it comes down to ammo. Each rifle is going to be different. They are capable of excellent accuracy. You really have to do some serious load development with the mosin in 7.62x54r. With surplus ammo and steal case ammo it's basically machine gun ammo. Reloading for it is challenging. It requires a lot more time and elbow grease. There are a lot more things you have to factor in due to wartime variations with Mosin barrels. Barrel harmonics are different on a Mosin too, they don't behave like a modern rifle. Guy's who compete in vintage matches with them do make alterations to them. Some will bed them. Some will have the crown recut. They will do trigger work to them.

2:33 Having spent 10 years in the marine corps, and shot “expert” a couple of the 6 times I went to the rifle range, I can say with certainty that the targets at the rifle range were not that small for ANY distance when shooting the known distance course of fire. The “10” ring on a 500 yard target is 12 or maybe 13 inches…. So that would be what… about 2 1/4 MOA? Sounds like the target is sized for the consistency of the ammunition. Anyone who says, or even implies, that this is the same as what marines do doesn’t know enough about shooting to understand just how big a difference there is.

Mosin sights aren't in metres (I thought they were too) They in a weird measurement called "Arshin" So those two friends had a ton stacked up against them, they're clearly not afraid to try something different, not afraid of a bit more than an extra challenge. They earned respect!!! No scope & then add in misfires & questionable factory ammo... Did way better than most of us would have & they need a special plaque each on a ton of respect award Bet they'll do far better if they get a chance to accurise the rifle, go to reloading & do load development. Brilliant to watch them in a very steep challenge & they still did way better than I would. Yeah Erik, you need a big highly varnished Honor Roll Shield on the wall somewhere for "Extra Steep Challenge Players" hahahaa Ton of respect, really enjoyed his (& the others) efforts. Everyone has utterly brilliant attitudes, wonderful attitudes. And Carly was a wonderfully down to earth person who brought a very calm, humble truck load of of "get it done" - She's a real thinking shooter, she's clearly trying to learn something from every second.
