I hope you get credit for them. When I watch on my Android phone, it doesn't show I watch them. I think you are missing many good comments and thumbs up.

Ouch! That was either the "golden tap" or you don't know your own strength. You're fortunate to have a budget for unexpected events like this. I prefer the steam gauges I have in my 310 presently. Quicker acquisition of needle position on a visual scan than a tape or digital display. But I'm an old timer and was weened on them. To each his own. Enjoy your videos, thanks for posting them.

Great that you train and use your plane on a regular basis. A few suggestions: Slow down when you are given a vector or when reaching an IAF. 17” should do with flaps 1. You will be more comfortable and not have a tendency to get behind. On climb-out full power until a minimum 1000AGL @ Vy. Full flaps when field in sight. I have not seen a checklist in your videos, possibly on your iPad or something. ALL of my students and fellow pilots use the, all the time. Try Checkmate if you don’t have one. I owned Bonanzas for 23 years and continue to use one today after more than 6000 hours. Keep up the good work. Ed ATP, MEL-SEL, CFI-I
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your comment. In this video I purposefully stayed a bit faster than I do in actual. I was trying to get all 6 approaches in for currency. At the end of a normal flight I start slowing/cooling the engines to be at 18"'s before glideslope intercept. When it is one dot high I lower the gear and go flaps 1. When the runway is made then full flaps pretty much as you suggested. I always depart with full power to 1000 AGL then set climb power (24"/2450 rpm) and start leaning as required. I do use a checklist but usually edit that out as I figure most people that watch are as interested in that. Bonanza's are sweet planes! Thanks again Edward. :)

FYI I had the exact same happen during my IFR training--I stuck a suction cup on the KI-525A and it broke the front glass (but not the second glass) during a practice approach. Apparently, without the front glass, static electricity builds up on the second glass and keeps the glideslope needles from working. My shop found a spare front glass for about $400 and it ops checked ok afterwards. Much cheaper than replacing it

Kevin, nice videos, and I enjoy the effort you put into them. Constructive criticism.....Do not allow people to loiter under an in movement or open bifold door. It is very dangerous. The fueling operation at the beginning is really unsafe. The FBO I worked at prohibited fueling in a hangar, or for that matter under an open door. CAVU to you!
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the videos! The fueling policy at our airport is they won't fuel in the hangar. They want the fuel tanks to be out of the hangar and are okay with the tail in. I only do it that way to not block the alley for other aircraft during the fueling. When we bought the hangar, they told me there was an emergency stop in the door to keep it from falling when it's stopped (not in transition). Based on your warning, I will dig deeper to verify if that is indeed true. I'm always learning and welcome constructive criticism. :)
@secsys52036 жыл бұрын
If you get a chance, join the BT forum (free), great group of folks. A large number of C brand owners on there so you won't feel left out. Lots of learning that goes on from a broad cross section. They have a recent thread on hangar door safety that is eye opening which reinforces my critique. It is important to treat bi-folds with a healthy dose of respect for not only your own personal safety but anyone you may have at the hangar with you. Keep up the great work!

Glad you are enjoying them Christina!! I would recommend going to your local airport that has a flight school and asking for an introductory flight. They all will do them. It usually is a one hour flight with an instructor to make sure you think it's for you before you start buying things (ie. headsets, study material, iPad, etc). If you enjoy it, they will tell you everything you need. Many people get their private pilot's license in 40-80 hours and then it's yours for life to enjoy. :)

I've not watched your videos before, Kevin, but I probably will end up adding you to all the other Aviation Vloggers I watch. If you don't mind, I do have a couple of questions for you. You're the first person I've seen with a G5. In fact, I didn't even know they were approved for twins, so I was bit surprised. You probably have a 300B or 400B IFCS (not sure which). Does the G5 display a Flight Director bar or cue? I would think that a FD would make flying any approach so much easier. Next, your second VLOC indicator was showing red flags throughout. Is that connected to your GNS430? Is that a WAAS unit? I would have thought that you would have had it tuned as a backup indicator for any approach. I mean, had you been in IMC and the HSI had gone completely south, you would have been able to transition to the second VLOC display and completed the flight. Your 310Q is a pretty looking airplane, looks nice for it's age. Thanks for sharing your videos with us, and I'll probably be looking in again on you.
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Glad you found us Gary. As soon as the G5 got approved for 310's I was an early adapter. If you look at their approval list the Twin Cessna's are under Textron as opposed to Cessna. I have an old Cessna 400 autopilot that has gotten a bit pitchy lately so I really never use it. I am planning on adding a Garmin GFC500 if/when they get approved for 310's. That autopilot/dual G5 setup will allow for FD bars. Currently they are disabled on the G5. The second VLOC is connected to the GNS430 but during this video I didn't tune it in to the approach. The 530 is WAAS but the 430 is not. In IMC I would do exactly as you suggested by dialing them both into the same approach as a backup. In this case I was banging out 6 approaches at airports that were very close so I didn't have the time to do that. Thank you for the compliment on the plane! I selected one that already had some nice things I was looking for and have been working hard upgrading things to how I want. Hope to see you around again. :)
@GaryMCurran6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hope that GFC 500 gets approved for the 310, but everything I've read so far says it'll probably be the GFC600, which is a huge step up in cost. Need to get a Dynon Skyview HDX approved. :) :D It was a nice day, VMC, and you didn't need to have the 430 tuned, but I was thinking about in IMC. I'm not current, nor an active flyer, but I still like to keep my hand in. I would find out if Garmin is going to certify the G500 in twins, and if not, look at Autopilot Central in Tulsa. I've seen them mentioned several times when I've been looking for information on autopilots, particularly the older Cessna ones. www.autopilotcentral.com/ Quite often I've heard that the capacitors go bad and are usually easily replaced to bring one of the 400 series back to life, as good as new. Might be less expensive if the GFC500 doesn't become available for twins.
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
I agree that it seems Garmin is leaning towards the 600 but I'm still hopeful until the final determination. :) I'm also watching folks like Dynon and the STC group to see what other autopilots come to the market for my plane. Looking through the logbooks Autopilot Central has has repaired my autopilot previously and I haven't ruled out going back to them. Just rather not throw any more money in 40 year old technology with all the new stuff coming out. Thanks for the suggestion!
@GaryMCurran6 жыл бұрын
I really would like to see Dynon start producing more STCs. I think the thing for them is infact the autopilot subsystem, since every plane is going to be different. I mean, the other stuff is pretty basic when you get right down to it. They've already delayed the Baron STC in favor or more SEL airplanes. If they could come out with an AML for a lot of aircraft, I'm pretty sure they would get a lot of business, and experience in implementing the autopilot for more airplanes, but it takes time to get over the top of the learning curve. I hope you find something that'll work for you. Trio and TruTrak are getting into the certified market as well, but just SEL four seat stuff, the usuals. I hope to see your update soon, and have fun at OSH18!

@Jacklangefeld6 жыл бұрын
It's funny you say that. I almost feel like I could fly because I've mastered the flight sim. I use "real world weather" settings so the sim gives you real time wind shear, crosswinds and torque. For instance, right rudder needs to be applied to compensate for engine torque when taking off. I have flown my uncle's 172 out of KLOT before, but I haven't taken official lessons. I suppose it's time. I heard there is a decent flight school at the DeKalb airport.

Ha Ha. I would love the TXi but given I already went down the G5 path I'll just double up on that. The poor man's G500 TXi. :)

What kind of sunglasses are those that you changed into at 5:15?
@tubehound694 жыл бұрын
Those are referred to as foggles, and they are used for training and practice. They limit your field of vision down to where all you can see is the instrument panel. When you use them you have to have a safety pilot so there is still someone able to look outside for other aircraft.

I see the owner of the plane is not with the pilot today he must be renting it from Jamie today

I agree but it was a bit spontaneous as I had the free time that day so I had to foggle up. :)

Why is the left mixture always lower than the right in your videos? Sometimes a lot. Not a twin pilot.

Yes. Instead of repairing that one I'm going to install a Garmin G5 HSI and that is how much they cost installed.

Great video, thanks for taking us along! Couple questions, why a 310 and do you have a Instagram account? Thanks again
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chuck...glad you liked it! I chose the 310 because I wanted the redundancy, increased speed and useful load of a twin. I wanted a normally aspirated bird with full de-ice living in the mid-west. It came down to 310's and Baron's for me and while Baron's are great aircraft, I prefer the Twin Cessna's. I don't have an Instagram yet...I've been told I should. I just joined Twitter (@Cessna310Pilot) the other day. I have to learn how to use it! I'm behind the world on social media. :)

310 Pilot, so did you pay $5000 for a HSI indicator replacement? Greetings from sunny Seattle. Happy happy happy .. Phil Robertson? 😁. Enjoyed your video as always. Curious if you practice emergency procedures, like engine out etc. would be useful to those of us intimidated by twins to watch a vid that shows how you guys prepare. BTW, what year is your 310?
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's about $5000 for a Garmin G5 HSI installed. That will match my attitude indicator and give reversionary backup to the AI if that ever fails where each display can act as the other. They both have independent 4 hour battery backups as well. I have practiced emergency procedures on my last BFR. That video is on my channel as well and I do the manual gear extension also. I do like your idea and will make a single engine approach next time. My 310 is a '73 Q model. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!

310 Pilot Nobody said flying was cheap, eh, but hey you can’t put a price on some other things. :) Twins are cool and the 310 is a particularly elegant bird. The nightmare scenario (other than operating costs) that’s kept me from venturing to twins is - you’re 500 feet agl after takeoff and the left engine sputters and conks .. curious how you prepare for it. Will look for your vid!
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
I'll try to demonstrate in an upcoming video one day. Basically you just train (in the plane and out of the plane) so that your initial reaction is to lower the nose and simultaneously verify/feather the dead engine. With the gear/flaps up and the prop feathered the plane will climb at 300-500 feet per min depending on weight/density altitude. You will need to bank about 3-5 degrees into the good engine and set up a zero side slip with the rudder. With training, it all happens quicker than typing/reading this. :) For me, in the 500 ft scenario if you are in a single you are coming down off airport probably. At least the twin gives you a chance of climbing/maintaining a safe altitude to an airport. This is absolutely only possible if you do everything correctly. If for some reason you can't get a climb rate don't slow down, hold blue line till you find a field/road etc. It will still descend at a lesser rate than a single. All easy to say I know but there are lot's of multi pilots that have had this happen and lived to tell.
@rickbarrington6 жыл бұрын
Agree, you have a better chance in a twin - if you do it all correctly and quickly - than in a single. Use any Redbird sims for this? Since I don’t own a plane I found sim time a great (and inexpensive) way to maintain proficiency.

R Barrington We have had to engine failures in the two C310's we owned and one in our Bonanza. The Bonanza was at 800 feet AGL and we put her into a field (see our vid on our channel if you like) gear and flaps up. We were soooo lucky because we were in Kansas at the time, flat with lots a fields. We live in Seattle with mountains and trees so if that had happened here we would have likely been killed. In our 1955 C310 we lost oil pressure in the left engine at cruise here in the PNW and simply shut it down and flew it home. In our C310P (1969 model) at rotation (here in Seattle at S36) the left engine mixture cable broke and the left engine went to about 20% power. We were at sea level ,under gross but with lots of trees. Kicked in some right rudder ,lowered the nose a tad ,raised the dead engine a few degrees and climbed out at 400 feet PM with no issue and well above blue line. You can feel the yaw instantly and instincts take over. The 310 is one of the better single eng performers but you better be trained to the point of nausea so when it does happen its on instinct. As stated here the worst that should ever happen is you cut the good engine and glide her in. NOTE: Some high density altitude takeoffs can be a situation where you already know prior to takeoff your flying a single and thus if you loose an engine your prepared to put her down. Especially in a non turbo twin. Happy flying 😊

That is the replacement cost of the new HSI that I installed in the broken ones place. It's the Garmin G5 HSI, you can see it on the videos posted after this one. That is unit plus installation.

For traveling purposes hands down a Mooney Ovation. Fastest production normally aspirated single. :) For short field fun a Cessna 180.

Great video! Quick question - why do you fly with the engine flows different on this guage: abload.de/img/untitled2ysl0.png
@310Pilot6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! I get this question a bit (glad cause it means people are paying attention :) and I will try to show the answer in detail on a flight soon. That flow gauge you see on the right with the needles is the old Cessna original and isn't accurate. I set my fuel flow using the Insight Twin G4 digital engine monitor I have. You can see a close up of that gauge and the fuel flow on my flight down to KY video. That gauge is accurate within a tenth of a gallon. I always keep both engines very closely matched. About 2.5 gallons at taxi, about 26 at takeoff and I generally cruise ROP 12.5 - 13 in cruise. I can give up some speed and cruise LOP around 10 per side but generally enjoy the speed of ROP. Hope this helps answer.

Ray, when I get it removed I'll give it to you. See what it cost to repair it and deduct that from whatever they are going for on the low end and it's yours. It may be that the repair cost is what it's worth and in that case you can have it for free.
