I am 4 yrs into learning guitar just 2 ish years younger than you. I've been learning power chords and palm muting. Couldn't get the deep muting thud sound , thought was doing it wrong. It was because pickups were too high. Now I feel like a Rock Star. So a Giant thank Uncle Larry for all you do on your channel. Cheers from Canada!

I'm still thankful one of the owners at Longhorn Guitars in Fort Worth (closed many years ago) talked me out of a Les Paul Studio back in the late 80's. They had an LP Studio for sale and I told the guy I really wanted an LP Custom. He said, "don't buy the Studio ... you'll always wish it was a Custom. just find yourself a Custom". I ended up finding an '84 LP Custom a few weeks later and I'll still have it to this day. I still think of that guy from time to time.

I have a 1982 Silverburst Les Paul Custom that’s all original (and in pristine condition), including Tim Shaw pickups and wiring harness. It was always very dark sounding and never sounded like I felt a LP should sound. I checked the volume and tone pots and found instead of 500k for both volume and tone, Gibson put 300k volume and 100k tone pots from the factory during that era. Mine measured under 300 volume and 81 and 83k each for the tone pots. Switching to 500k audio taper pots radically changed that guitar, opened it up, and it sounded like a Les Paul for the first time in the 30+ years I had owned it. The Tim Shaws sounded amazing with those 500k pots. I reinstalled the original pots in preparation to sell the guitar, so it’s back to original. But it was amazing to play and hear it with those other pots

But on mine if I crank the tailpiece down tight I get plenty of break angle without the back of the bridge contacting the strings. Guess it's a case-by-case thing.
