@Jimbo_in_Limbo17 күн бұрын
I really dig Elvis Costello's singing voice. I've always struggled to describe it, but he has this natural compression that almost makes it sound like he has a secondary set of vocal chords. Like there's the note he's singing and then there's almost a drone going on as well.

Your hearing loss comments reminded me that back in the mid 60's, my 1st band had a "house-band" gig in a popular club near UW in Milwaukee, and some med students asked us if they could do a hearing study on the band as we were there at least 5 nights a week for almost 2yrs, and we agreed. They came in for weeks and did audiograms on us, like a base reading, then after 1 set, 2 sets 3, etc. and on average we each lost 30 -35% in the course of each night, which returned to base readings the next day. In the process I learned that my rheumatic fever as a toddler, and the resulting chronic strepp infections I suffered yearly till my late teens, had taken 30% from my right ear's base hearing. It has made me adapt over the years in how I play and hear music. Also, tone seekers need to realize that every component in the chain can vary, like no 2 "identical" speakers actually sound the same, so 'luck of the draw' plays a part.

This Years Model is one of my favorite albums of all time and is one of the finest examples of a rhythm section being the melodic heart of an entire album. Great playing brother. I’m particularly glad you brought up the ELVIS Costello conversation. I’ve argued in his defence for decades about him as a “singer”. He’s one of the best singers I’ve ever heard whether as you say, you like his voice or not ……that isn’t the point as the two are mutually exclusive. My producer Trevor Horn was not an EC fan, that is not until I turned him on the the album EC did with Bacharac ‘Painted From Memories’. It’s borderline a masterpiece which really displays EC’s ability as an incredible singer. Anyway please keep doing what you’re doing brother. -Seal (recording artist known as) ✌🏾&💜
