A wonderful film clip.I was 11 years old at the time and to be an engineman on the Western was all I ever wanted to be. Alas, it was not to be. I had to wear glasses from the age of 14 due to short-sight and by the time I'd have been old enough anyway, steam had gone and diesel was in. Might have well been a bus driver. Ah well, I can still enjoy watching these nostalgic clips instead.

Excellent stuff. Some good "catches" on the way; a North British Type 2 at Patchway and the down Bristol Pullman at Sydney Gardens. You can really feel that climb out of Westbury. Can just see the Dilton Marsh station totem in green; I forgot that was Southern Region. Very well put together.

Brilliant piece of cine film. The days when lineside veg was kept clear so you could admire the countryside. Passes the 0745 Padd-BTM Blue Pullman at Bath Sydney Gardens; some of the 'car stop' markers on Bath Spa platforms for these units survived until the 1980s.

What a great bit of film. I signalled 5029 many times in c2010 when it came through Yeovil Pen Mill on the trips to Weymouth. Cabled it and travelled behind on many days. Great memories!

Lovely video thanks for posting. Liked the sign asking for the ' prevention of smoke and steam at this place.' Then the smoky start up!

Two points: first, surprising that water was taken at Bath as I did not think Foxes Wood troughs were already closed but that must have been so I suppose. Second, the video gives the impression that the train had not stopped at Westbury as it was doing quite a speed past the shed but again perhaps I am mistaken there too! Thirty years before, it would have been a Star heading the train and the Castle was repeating the policy of using the older engines on secondary duties, although I have never thought Cardiff to Brighton or Portsmouth as 'secondary'.

Great piece of film.As this was at the end of the big freeze perhaps the troughs had been emptied as a guard against freezing.

😂Excellent archive of the austere conditions of a GWR loco footplate, the firemen really earnt their crust, it’s a shame the cameramen are not accredited.
