Temporary on cavity is when the bullet first hits the giant balloon that goes off in the gell. The permanent wound cavity is what your eyes see in the gel that's left after it's all said and ✔️ 👍

Thank you. After open heart surgery, I lost my taste for venison but I still love to shoot. I tried the 50 grain pellets. Wouldn't shoot 1 so I used 2 with round ball, mini ball, 3 different premium bullets, .44 w/sabot up to .50 cal. Could not hit the paper at 25 yards, just all over the place. Dropped to 80 grains of loose powder and 1" groups with everything out the pipe. THAT is why testing like you are doing is so important. Again, thanks.

You are right about the 50 cal bullet not needing expansion to kill cleanly. My 50/70 Govt load with 70 grs black powder clocks 1300 fps with a 450 gr cast lead bullet. I was totally amazed at the devastation on a 250lbs boar at 75 yards. The Boar dropped in its tracks with a broadside lung shot. I found a 50 cal hole going in and a 50 cal hole coming out. The devastation was the fact that most of the lungs and other stuff, were sucked out the back in a cone shape that extended 15 ft behind the Boar. I have never seen that much stuff sucked out of an animal.

Awesome job testing lower velocities! Nobody ever bothers to do it with muzzleloaders. They all just shoot max charges and conclude every bullet will work. Next time if you would shoot in reverse order it would make it easier to see the smaller wound tracks. It would be even better if you could use loose powder to dial in around 1200 fps, 1400 fps, and 1600 fps. We can just assume everything works above that since it’s been shown time and again all over YT.

I think the federal firestar pellets may be the answer since 2 pellets is 66gr which will likely get you in that window of 1300-1500. I’d love to see the Barnes 290gr TMZ/TEZ tested as well as the cutting edge 300gr .451. The hornady monoflex 250gr would also be a good one. Grafs has all of those and the firestar pellets. Thanks again for being the only person to do the testing properly instead of just running full house charges and marveling at large wound track after large wound track.

here in north carolina you can shoot your heart's desire as far a muzzle loaders. 75 percent of my hunting 15 to 35yds. but have taken deer 85-90 yards in the woods. i ve used a saboted hornady 44cal xtp probably the most part of 38 years. the 180gr xtp and sierra 180gr jhc with 80 -100 gr pyrodex is extremely destructive to vital organs . the only bullets I've been able to retrieve were quartering shots between shoulder and hide with massive expansion, good retaining weight. that bullet you tested is awesome. if i didn't use what i do i would definitely try what you tested. another wonderful honest testing i greatly appreciate. there's a lot out there for muzzle loaders but i properly test before relying on what is advertised as i and you know don't always perform and are failures from the factory .papa wishing you well 😊

Great video! I love muzzle loader bullet tests. I've used 50 caliber Hornady 240 grain XTPs for years with decent results. They typically did a decent job of taking whitetail deer but they seemed inconsistent. Sometimes they would basically blow up into pieces and other times they seemed to perform just fine. I used two 50 grain Pyrodex pellets or occasionally 100 grain of Pyrodex powder. It would be interesting to see how they performed in ballistics gel!

you don't need a bullet starter with this round, you can seat them inside the barrel with your fingers no matter how many rounds you fire, the black part on the back of the bullet scrubs the bore as its fired.
