I was part of the surface fleet aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 when the Easter Offensive started. Strauss and several other ships were part of the mission of Captain John Ripley to blow up Dong Ha Bridge. Strauss was assigned to protect Marine spotters against NVA troops advancing on them. Same spotters were also directing the other ships to slow their advance toward the Dong Ha Bridge. Several of those spotters later came aboard Strauss to thank up for saving their lives.
