This illustrates exactly why early firearms either require proper cover or need to fire in ranks: The first 2 or 3 ranks fire, move to the back of the line to reload and then the next 2 or 3 ranks move up and follow with another volley

I love musket battles in this game. You should consider downloading the modded unit pack called 200+ Napoleonic Units. I do custom musket and bayonet battles all the time.

There's a weapon available in custom classes that's musket with a bayonet and it really makes a difference.
