In this video, you raise the question of how long to cut the rope seals around the main bearing. This is, I believe the answer: the rope seal is slightly compressible. You should press as much of it as possible into the groove. Then, when you tighten down on the rope, it will compress and be snug on the ends, then push more tightly inward onto the shaft. If you want to test this, cut the seals shorter, and you certainly will have an oil leak, and not just as the cut ends, but too little inward pressure on the shaft will allow it to leak all the way around. I'm a huge fan of your work, Mr. Dominguez. I have learned a few things around KZbin, but you are the best most thorough of all the KZbin teachers. I'm overhauling my first 8BA Flathead V8 in a 1949 Ford F2 Pickup. I have watched your films over and over. Training in surgery let me watch masters of the OR repeatedly. You are in the class of teachers. Thank you.

What a beautiful job! My first flathead is a basket case with many parts missing. You are providing a great service to me in showing such great detail. My engine was completely disassembled and laying in the dirt for 15 years. Thank you very much!

You’re welcome Raymond, glad it may help you get your Flathead together.

Good to see your work. Looks great. I read in the old manual that the rope seals need to be soaked in motor oil overnight to fully penetrate them before pressing them in the groove. It was to keep them from being damaged during the break-in period. They also make graphite rope seals that do not need to be "primed" in oil.
@aarondominguez45333 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. The seals I installed are the new style.
@aarondominguez4533 Жыл бұрын
Ya, the old ones you did need to soak. New ones, I just use the assembly lube on them.

hello aaron hopefully your still watching your channel , i have a dumb question ,i have a 48 ford flathead v8 with a mechanical fuel pump and a new fuel pump push rod to install, what end of the rod goes down into engine the groved circular top or smooth finished end >?
@aarondominguez45332 жыл бұрын
Hi Erwin, I believe the smooth side goes down into the engine. I don't thing the little ringed side will fit into the pushrod bushing in the block.

Any 8ba rebuild reference manuals you'd recommend?
@aarondominguez4533 Жыл бұрын
Hi Boxcar, I have and use the ones from Mike at H&H flatheads, the Vern Tardel/Mike Bishop one, and one from Ron Bishop. I also like the Joe Abbin identification & rebuilders guide, but it's not a step by step guide.

@@aarondominguez4533 Thanks man...we've talked before if you remember...I'm the retired LM. I've collected a decent group of of motors and parts and just scored my first Merc flathead. I started to build a video on it but have decided to add the disassembly for a more complete assessment. I'm going to try to DM you now to go "secure". lol

How hard is it to rebuild those water pumps?

Not very hard if you have a press. I did a video of how to rebuild them.
