Understanding the essentials of your subject prevents becoming overwhelmed by too much and extraneous visual information. Working constructively was not how I was taught, but it has opened worlds to me. London is a superb teacher.

Thank you very much Mr London. These rules are very useful in portrait drawing. It helped my students, as well as myself during lesson. Your classical rules sets good proximity, thus combining them with on the spot sight-size comparison +/-, I can draw better.

#1 The level of the eyes divides the height of a head in half. #2 The height of a face is 5/6 of the height of a head. #3 The height of a face can be divided into three equal parts: the forehead, nose, and jaw. #4 The width between the ears is comparable to 2/3 of the face's height. #5 The distance between the outer corners of the eyes is comparable to the distance from the eyebrow to the middle of chin.
