Just bought my first e39 530 sport manual; a rare gem. Owner failed to tell me the extensive flooding in the back foot well from bad vapor barrier. Easy fix for the barrier, but now I have the WHOLE floor to wire brush and clear rust, and drying out that thick foam. Luckily the passenger side was spared; none of those electricals were harmed.

I love my e39 528i m52tu. It has been a fantastic lil car. It never has left me on the side of the road. The only rolling issue I had was when water pump went and it just so happens that I coasted into an Advance Auto parking lot lol. I bought mine from my dad at 60k and she now is about to rollover 250k. I have an extensive maintenance list of everything I've done over the years....If you maintain these cars correctly, they will make you smile every time you drive them.

Anyone who is intimidated by the amount of electric gadgets and small parts that can break, don't be afraid. Most of the issues are fairly cheap fixes if you DIY or bring the car to a trustworthy independent mechanic. However if you don't know/care to learn about DIY fixing small things, AND you don't know any mechanics you can be certain about not ripping you off or "fixing" your car wrong... Do NOT buy an e39, don't buy any BMW unless it's brand new and has warranty on everything. If you're able to take care of the small things (like small electronics, small breaking plastic parts, cracked tubes and whatnot) without taking the car to the stealership, an old BMW is gonna be a very reliable car. You will only get big problems if u let the small ones wear out the car. You will only get the "nightmare moneypit" issues if you fix the small problems for ripoff prices by dishonest people claiming "It's a bmw, it costs a lot to fix this light that's burnt out!". Or by ignoring the small problems and breaking the engine, the whole suspension, or the transmission. All of those parts are very reliable when you maintain and drive the car in a responsible way.

@@eliifill8993 I don't own a car yet but what I will do if I was you is look around the car and notice if there is something going on that's not supposed to happen, like water on the carpet, dead pixels, exterior rubber wear, etc and replace that. Also make sure there are no leaks in the engine and replace what's leaking. I also recommend asking the BMW subreddit, they seem to be very helpful from what I can tell

I ran a 1998 E39 Touring from new until sold for scrap/rework 15 years later. Window mechanisms fail because the wrong plastic material was used for the pulleys. Acetal used, should have been 30% GF nylon. I repaired all four myself (Engineer). Fuel sender is poor design by Valeo, a French Company. Wire improperly supported and falls off. Second unit repaired by myself which lasted life of car. Ignition switch unit by Valeo fails and cruise control stops working. Passenger seat has an occupancy sensing switch comprised of two layers of conductive ink coated plastic foil with perforated plastic foil spacer. Ink wears out and switch fails. Part no longer available from BMW in 2012. Steering rack bellows split 90k miles. McPherson struts leaked at about 60k miles. Rear airbags split at about 70k miles. Touring's rear tailgate loom wires failed just like saloon in video, due to wrong wire being used, should have been finer strand flex wire as used in all other manufacturer's steering column switches wiring. Rear Touring 5w lamps failed about every 6 months. Fuel and temp. gauges failed at 50k miles and car went through six replacement instrument packs, five under warranty. Fault never fixed. Had to run car for second half of its life with no temp. or fuel gauges. Plastic radiator top tank catastrophically failed at 100k miles when top hose connection blew completely off. Water pump failed twice in about 150k miles. I always specified genuine BMW parts to be used. Electronics for ZF gearbox sometimes erratic, would not select gears and sometimes delayed changes. Lasted life of vehicle though. Car serviced by Trivett Classic BMW, Parramatta, Sydney, the most competent BMW Dealer in Sydney Australia for most of its life. Fast, very comfortable, excellent brakes, powerful acceleration, exemplary handling. Pity about the unreliability and lack of durability.

Thanks for the comprehensive list! 2 questions: - I have an airbag light that came on. Common issue? Easy fix? - Auto headlights don't seem to work. They stay on all the time. Easy fix? Thanks 👍
@zx81uk2 жыл бұрын
Yes - airbag light is often caused by the 'occupancy sensor' mat 'aging' in the front passenger seat - it was on mine. Find the components and instructions on the internet to fix the little box under the passenger seat. This makes the car think it has a passenger - and the airbag warning will no longer trigger in error - so I'm happy with that. Once the fix is in place, to reset the warning light needs a friendly local garage to clear the code and the red light does not 'error' anymore. Headlights, I only ever had one fault caused by the Multi-function steering wheel getting damp. I pulled all 72 fuses one at a time until I found the circuit that was overloading the 'bus' with false messages - needless to say it was the last fuse I pulled that identified the Multi-function steering wheel to be the problem.

Hi Nathan I got a question and hope you could help I got a 1999 bmw 528i when the traction control light comes on I don’t have any power and sometime it dies randomly but if I leave it seating overnight it’s starts right away and the lights goes away but when it goes on it runs like crap and don’t have any power
@florinlepadatu5648 Жыл бұрын
You may add twisted seats issue for the power seats, active seats liquid drain and power folding mirrors bearings, electrochrome side mirrors leak as well as sunshades joints crack, of cause european models have other issues with diesel and petrol engines as well as the manual transmitions especially GM ones, M5 engine his specific issues but all of these pails in front of the rust at the rocker panels and jack mounting points oh let's not forget the famous webasto. My opinion is that if you're not able to do yourself some basic maintenance and have a trusty friend or a garage that will not rip you off for advance repairs better stay away cause the parts are usually expensive at least the original ones... Except the engine, witch I don't know I totally agree with the rest however control arms bushings and struts or joints are consumables and had to be change on any car or model is not smth specific to e39 I've seen worse on many others european cars... I still love my e39 after 16 years of ownership even is just a M47 I'll never ever sell it!

Hey all, I have a 2001 E39 530i with 204,299 miles. I've done pretty much every update listed, minus the transmission flushes, and it cost me... transmission just died... is it worth buying a used transmission or would you go with a rebuilt unit?

Find one from a crashed model, change the fluid and install it.

should i just buy a lexus GS 300

depends, thoroughly check out the car you're interested in before purchasing. a lexus could end up being a worse deal than a used E39.

My e39 is leaking ATF towards the front right of the car. Anybody got any idea what it could be? It leaks mainly when parked.

I have a question for you Nathan. I am looking at a 2004 BMW 525i what should I look for and inspect before making a decision? The car has 128,000 on it help please?????
@NathansBMWWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
Well the 2004 e60 is the worst year to get, it still has the micro power module and all the pre facelift things , depends on the price but at 128 its due for all cooling hoses and front control arms , to do those things it will cost about $600 in parts , vanos seals valve cover etc for the M54

If you haven't purchased run away with your money😅.

You said it's a lot cheaper to run the engine without the secondary air pump and all that nonsense... Why is this? Is it more efficient?
@hdavid9885 жыл бұрын
Secondary air pump just lowers the emissions at cool starts. If you are worried the invironment you replace it. If not, then not.
