PLY Magazine is running a Spinalong to coincide with the launch of their book, 51 Yarns to Spin Before You Cast Off. You can post your entries on their Facebook, Instagram and Ravelry groups with the hashtags #51yarns, #handspunyarn and #plymagazine. There's a different theme each week and you can find a list of the topics and other information here: plymagazine.co... The best part is that one winner each week gets a one-year subscription to PLY! I've decided to play along in video form as well by creating a video each week to correspond with that week's spinalong theme.
This week it's Cotton, a fibre with an ancient history (fragments have been found that date back about 7000 years) but one which can seem intimidating to newcomers. In this video I share three methods for spinning cotton without buying specific cotton-spinning tools. I'm using a drop spindle, a spinning wheel and a quill attachment.
Some other videos showing more traditional cotton tools like tahklis and charkhas are:
• Art of Spinning (Makin... Art of Spinning by Madhav Sahasrabudhe
• Step 2 Spinning on a I... Spinning on a Indian Book Charkha by Joan Ruane
Next week (w/c Monday 8th October) is Down Wool. Hope to see you again then. In the meantime, happy spinning!

A nice, somewhat heav,y drop spindle was what I had, and so that was what I learned to spin cotton on. I am so happy to see you demonstrate that, yes, you can spin cotton on a drop spindle! (A top whorl spindle spins faster, and is better for it.) And when bored, I liked to spin cotton from medicine bottles, when on break, at work, to make string.

I find myself listening to you and watching your cat whenever possible. To be clear, I love cats that's not a complaint, and this is a very informative video. Also, you could support spindle with that Turkish spindle.

I'm new to spinning with a drop spindle and I unwittingly got a bunch of cotton roving and it is quite frustrating. I guess you could say this is a baptism by fire haha.

Thanks for this great demonstration about spinning cotton in a few ways. I'm about to get back into spinning after about 30 years break from it!! Since illnesses I can't tolerate wool, so I intend spinning all plant based yarns & there's not much online about them. Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

I’m just after buying a charka from India! I have no idea what I’m doing but I love love love the history behind it and the craftsmanship of the book charka. So even if I never use it, or never get the hang of it, I’ll be happy with it! Lol. It comes with loads of punis so hopefully I’ll be able to play a bit with them.

Thanks for another great video! I initially bought the quill for my miniSpinner to wind storage bobbins with (I own more than one electric drills, but they always seem to need charging when I want to use them...glowering at the men in my family), so watching you spin cotton with yours has me excited to give it a go. I've tried using a tahkli, but my fingers get all fumbly😁 I HAD to watch this twice...once for the spinning content and once for my kitty fix!

This was very good. Your calm demeanor was helpful for me to relax. My only need was to see a close up shot of your playback. I wanted to see the little bumps-how tight they were. Will you do another video to show that?

I didn't know you could add a spindle onto an E-Spinner. That's really good to know. I've just 3D printed my own charkha because I have gotten into weaving and this got me interested in spinning. I've only tried one session with a drop spindle and a pedaled spinning wheel. I wanted something inexpensive but a process that I might enjoy more than the drop spindle which wasn't my favorite. I should probably give that another try too since it's been a long time and I have a lot more patience than I used to. I'm going to record my process. It should be interesting being an almost absolute beginner spinner trying to work with cotton but hopefully all my research before diving in is going to pay off. I've found some great resources such as a vhs lesson for the charkha from the 80's. 😂 The details are a little hard to see but the information is great.

Just order my Ashford Spindle the other day. It has been shipped. I'll give it a good go when it gets here. Drop spindle is too heavy and no luck on the wheel. My wheel is a single drive Irish tension wheel even with the tension band off it has too much pull. Not tried with scotch tension yet.

Where can i buy cotton to spin on Indian charka
@TinyFibreStudio
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy, I'm currently spinning straight from cotton tops on my charkha. I'm not sure whereabouts you are based but you can generally buy cotton tops or sliver from most places that sell undyed wool like World of Wool, Wingham Wool Work and Adelaide Walker in the UK, Paradise Fibers and The Woolery in the US. You can also buy cotton in puni form - most places that stock Indian charkhas also stock punis. Or you can just form the top/sliver into punis by hand (spinoffmagazine.com/roving-reporter-cotton-spinning-angst-try-preparation-trick/) or with cotton carders. Hope that helps!
