Many people went to work on 9/11 thinking it was just another day. Some never came home that night. The following day was a sobering reminder to mourn our losses, hug our loved ones, and regroup as a nation. Now, 20 years later, we give honor to those we lost and continue to count our blessings as Americans bonded by infinite patriotism. No matter how difficult the odds, the strength of this country is now and always will be too great to measure.

I'm from the UK and on 9/11 I was visiting my sister who lives about ten miles from the WTC.There are about twenty houses in her street-by 11/11 almost every one had taken in a fire fighter who had travelled from all over the United States to help. Some of their colleagues had been accommodated in school gymnasiums and sports centres but those who stayed with my sister and her neighbours were treated like royalty and deservedly so.People would drive them to the pile where they'd work until their bosses forced them to stop-a phone call day or night and they'd be collected and brought back where they'd sleep until they were taken back again. When they were forced to take a little more time off, after the first week, they'd congregate together in one house, just talking. There was now a whole community of firefighters in one street. They could keep in touch with their families, have decent food and a comfortable place to sleep, not that they would have noticed where they slept.they were so tired. Some stayed for two months and their families came to visit, their fares paid for by the neighbours who had bought them clothes and everything they needed for a prolonged stay-most of the men hadn't really packed, just set off for New York as fast as possible. When they eventually did start to reluctantly go home, they were driven thereThe neighbours weren't heros, not like everyone more closely involved, but they did their bit in a small way to help out.

They WERE heroes. They opened their homes to strangers. Fed and clothed them, gave them somewhere to sleep, and a safe place to talk to each other. People forget about the people who have worked behind the scenes, making things happen. You don't need to have a badge and helmet to be a hero.

@@deathbycheese850They were heros in a way somewhat similar to the townspeople of Gander opening their homes. (Except, of course, the "plane people" that stayed in Gander were stranded there and for a long time they had no idea about the WTC's being down, the Pentagon, or Flight 93. Whereas the out-of-town volunteers decided and chose to be there away from there families to help families they didn't know at all ❤️‍🩹🫂.)

My young teen son was home sick that day and the events of that heinous day set his life’s path. He is quickly climbing the ranks of 1 of the national police services with the aim of focusing on national security and he lives the mantra: “Not on my watch.” This response from him is not uncommon among his age peers and many others. May nothing remotely similar ever happen on their or anyone else’s watch.

Everyone across the country wanted to do something, anything to help or show support. Many friends enlisted because of this, I was a few weeks shy of 18 when it happened. We have a whole new generation plagued by PTSD because they were willing to go over there and fight those responsible. But we were united in our pain, and our resilience to stand back up and fight for each other

It was my generations pearl harbor. the death that occurred and the horrors that followed were awful but it brought us together as a nation for once. it's so frustrating to see where we are right now as a country.the hate we have for each other right now. the sacrifices ppl made that day and after for what? more violent and more divided then ever, detached and no longer a community.

And 22 years later half the country wants to defund our police. They went in with the firefighters and they died with the firefighters, in hopes that someone else could live. We used to know this, but now its been forgotten. And even though half the country hates them, they would do the same thing if something horrible like this happens again. Kinda like how healthcare workers and nurses were kinda like celebrities early in the pandemic. How quickly people forget those that would place your life above their own. But we will always show up, even when forgotten or despised

You literally refuse to acknowledge how police brutality has been shown to the world thanks to smart phones. Every race has been brutalized by these murderers that hide behind a badge, white included, yet we dont acknowledge this. It just happens and has happened to non whites so much more as to be fodder for comedy shows, literally one of the first mediums to address it. You need to do some research before opening the comment box again. There are so many good police officers that suffer because of these bad apple officers I speak of, and I feel so horrible for those just trying to be good cops and look out for the community. They don't deserve to be lumped in with the worst of existence.

Medic presents the darker side of those in uniform now more than the dedicated ones. The times seem to be reversing in our treatment of each other. The US needs to unify again. I don't know how we'll do it at this point with so much politicized and the country divided. But these stories stand true to that time not so long ago when we worked together to rise above sheer evil. May we humble ourselves to rise again.

I had flown from the Pacific NW to the Midwest because I'd been working there and was coming back to ship my things up to live there permanently. I was at someone's home and was up early for tea and some breakfast. I stepped into the living room to catch a glimpse of the morning news. As I was standing there, the news flashed the first tower which had just been hit. I could hardly believe it. No one knew what happened. Some thought it was a bomb. How could a plane fly right into the tower?! Did the pilot have a heart attack? I said, "Hey! Come see this... the WTC is on fire." Was it someone who had veered off-course somehow? As I was standing there, I literally watched the second plane fly right into the second tower. "OMG" and shock. My jaw dropped open. I yelled to the person there, "Quick! You've got to come see this! A plane just literally flew into the WTC! What is happening?!" It was dark day... followed by an uprising of massive unity. Shocking but solidifying. Tragic but strengthening. It is now 2023. We need to come together again.

I watched TV, in horror, as I was getting ready for work that morning, 8:30, I won't ever forget. I had a little flag I grabbed as I walked out the door. I worked in a large hospital in Houston's medical center. As I was walking down the halls, people were stopping and saluting the little flag. Someone saying they'd fall wouldn't have happened because it was like the titanic, it was built for a lot but not everything... Things people wouldn't have ever expected like a jet full of fuel to sheer through the buildings. Jet fuel burns so hot that even the most well built structures could not have held up and those buildings were some of the best built. No one could have anticipated everything and I hope they all remember that, that they did the best they could and that's all anyone could ask for.

Since the day, I have never understood why the towers collapsed. The structure seemed like it was standing strong enough after they were struck. Yet it crumbled so fast. So many lives lost that day. It was such a heartbreaking day.

As a "9/11 family member" I have to say there is nothing more impressive than September 12. Like the gentleman said, we were one nation… United, shoulder to shoulder. No one cared if you were from a red state or blue state I don't know what it's going to take for us to get back there, but for the sake of our country we need to.

People were waving their hands with white towels for anybody could save or escape them. When they saw helicopters they waving their hands from the windows in both the towers. Because they were very crazy that anybody could help and save them.

Sorry, but when you have young children in a crisis situation, it's your responsibility, as their parent to be there with them. Regardless of what your job is outside the home, your only real job, the only one that's truly important, is being a parent to your young children! The thought is nice, but how horrible that he left young children, you should have been there!

Actually, they weren't the last rescues. Janelle Guzman was the last rescue. She was leaving the South Tower when it collapsed. She was trapped for 72 hours before being found by rescue dogs. So yeah, the two officers were amongst the last group of people to be pulled from the rubble, but Janelle is truly the person the last person they found alive in the rubble.

I miss the patriotism and unity of the country that occurred after this tragic event. A rhetorical question, perhaps, but why did it have to take something this bad, of this magnitude, to bring out the best in people across the nation?
