She approaches this complex and emotionally weighted song with such an off the cuff lightness that you don't see her build and turn of thoughts. The revelation of the character almost surprises her vocally and that in my opinion is such a a gift few actors can pull off...❤

Yes, this is an outstanding performance of this song. She truly understands, acts, and gives it her own interpretation, such that I actually found a different way to understand the meaning of the piece. And, she takes the HIGH Note at the word "past" at 4:13 with a Belt that no other singer has been able to do, without wrecking it completely. Very impressive. Also, another extremely fine performance of this song, and arguably one of the best, is the performance by Liz Calloway. You can find it here on youtube, of course. And, the orchestra accompanying her is excellent. One of the Patti Lupone performances is way too fast and not in the same league, though I truly treasure her talent. Enjoy!!!!

I was so lucky to work with Lindsay on this song before most of her broadway career. An evening with Stephen Schwartz and he was in the audience. I believe the magic created that night led to her entire career.. and it was this song years before! Lindsay is an epic force I’ve known for at least 20 years. I got to music direct stuff in her childhood and it was such a treat... LINDSAY ROCKS!

David Jayden, Thank you so much for sharing. I am a classically trained pianist and I have worked with many singers over the years. Maureen McGovern, Tyne Daly, rod McKuen. if you have a moment, please look at my site and you can see some of the fun that I have accompanying some of the great singers by playing along with the singers and the orchestra accompanying them. We are neighbors in California.

When I was a girl, I had a favorite story Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind Her voice could match the angels in its glory But she was blind, the lark was blind An old king came and took her to his palace Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed "Sing for me, my meadowlark Sing for me of the silver morning Set me free, my meadowlark And I'll buy you a priceless jewel And cloth of brocade and cruel And I'll love you for life if you will, sing for me" Then one day as the lark sang by the water The god of the sun heard her in his flight And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her The gift of sight, he gave her sight And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender "Come along fly with me, my meadowlark Fly with me on the silver morning Past the sea where the dolphins bark We will dance on the coral beaches Make a feast of the plums and peaches Just as far as your vision reaches, fly with me" But the meadowlark said no for the old king loved her so She couldn't bear to wound his pride So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day He found his meadowlark had died, every time I heard that part I cried And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb A beautiful young man appears before me Singing, "Come, oh won't you come?" And what can I do if finally for the first time The one I'm burning for returns the glow If love has come at last it's picked the worst time Still I know I've got to go Fly away, meadowlark Fly away in the silver morning If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark So it's off where the days won't bind me I know, I leave wounds behind me But I won't let tomorrow find me back this way Before my past once again can blind me, fly away And we won't wait to say goodbye My beautiful young man and I

I've just gone through 'hell & highwater' to find this track. I listened to it daily a few years ago, when I moved out of my home, and London for 6mths. I was obsessed with it. When I arrived home, there was so much stuff ( not good), still happening, I didn't have time to listen to music. Today I was feeling nostalgic, and started to think about the songs I listened to while I was abroad. This was obviously one of them. I remembered a bird's name being in the title, thought it was cuckoo! Couldn't remember the name of the singer either, so I had a 'big job' googling US musical theatre female singers, knew if I saw the name I'd recognise it, but safe to say, her name didn't come up. Maybe not American. Then I googled songs from musicals with bird names in the title. Plenty of them, however, not this one! And now I can't remember how I got it, but I'm delighted to say, with much perseverance I did! Tears still welling up....

If I ever fall in love again If I ever fall in love again, It'll be with someone just like you. I don't say that I'm in love again But on the day you came my way, I knew. If I ever fall in love again, This is just the way it ought to be, But if it's really love again, I'll leave to fate, I'd rather wait and see. How can I know When my head is saying no And my heart's telling me that it's real? Can it be wrong If I burst into song At the wonder of feeling the way That I suddenly feel? If I ever fall in love again I shall know exactly what to do. And when I fall in love again I know it must be someone just like you. The way that I suddenly feel! If I ever fall in love again I shall know exactly what to do. She just has a much darker tone and a wider vibrato than most musical theatre singers who usually have a much brighter tone. I thought the same thing the first time I saw her play Elphaba. It sounded like it had been lowered then I realized it was just her tone making it sound deeper. She's just incredible.
