The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger was first published in Liberty magazine in 1927, in January, two months before The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place.
I think it's a great story. I read it ages ago, but re-read it over Christmas. I'm glad I ended the series on this one. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments!
I'd be very glad to hear your views on this story, as it kind of blew me away for all sorts of reasons. It's been a long haul to get these on to KZbin but finally the channel boasts all the Sherlock Holmes tales and novels and quite a few other Conan Doyle stories too, including many of his historical and supernatural ones.
Thank you as always for your support. If you haven't visited here before please consider subscribing and hitting the notifications bell! Suggestions for new directions / requests gratefully received.

Edit: I would freak out if you read some Poirot (Murder in Mesopotamia is currently not available in full without an AI on KZbin) not sure if it's not in the public domain, but many later works are... I’m glad you commented on this. My thoughts exactly. Sui*ide was seen as a criminal offence until relatively recently, punishable by death I kid you not if caught in the act or as an accomplice to said act . I may be incorrect but it was certainly a criminal offence, probably related to Catholicism/ religious reasons. It’s not our life to be done away with but God’s. Or something like that. Anyway we live in different times now. For better or worse. She said it, never judge lest you walk in my shoes and Holmes had no reply.

Ohhhhh, Greg...you once again showcased your beautiful talent! Dr. Watson's voice sounded aged, as it should be, I believe; and Holmes' chatacter, you always are spot on when it comes to delivering his "personality". Fantastic job!,👍 Very sad story for the two friends to have experienced the presence of the Veiled Lodger. Holmes most likely was depressed for days after getting the note. I shall miss new stories from these gentlemen but, alas, the stories you have read on them are here forever for us to come back to. That's what I do every single night. I am truly one of your faithful listeners. Thank you for sharing your immense talent of reading/performing to us. Thank you so much for all the recordings! I knew the stories from Czech translations but your narration painted them in true vivid British Victorian colours for me, even more than the Jeremy Brett series did. There are hundreds of details I suddenly noticed and understood, and dozens of historical trivia I learned. This story truly is very moving. I remember the sentence "I´m sending you my temptation" from my childhood. The final conversation between Holmes and the veiled lady is so... human. It shows what a vast gap, or even a precipice there is between two people who lead vastly different lives. It´s like they each live in a different world. And the reader can understand both of them. Holmes´ words must have sounded incredibly hollow to the veiled lady... and yet she was strong enough to obey them. Holmes doesn´t sound like the usual Holmes here. I think sir A.C. Doyle knew conversations like this from his medical practice. Perhaps he was in the role of Holmes, talking to patients with cancer about the importance of patience in this impatient world, but knowing how hard it is for them... I´d love to hear you narrate Walden by H.D. Thoreau, plus Brother Cadfael stories by Ellis Peters, but they´re probably not out of copyright :-( And a Polish chemist Waclaw Golembowicz wrote great Holmes pastiches "Chemical Stories of Sherlock Holmes".

Hi MartaVdz Very interesting observations. I think there is something very spiritual here - something Doyle is acknowledging perhaps as he comes to the end of his career. That Holmes has limited powers in the great scheme of things? Anyway, I did find it a great story on which to end. Someone sent me 'Walden' and I'm afraid I've never opened it: I'll have a look at it soon! These Chemical Stories sound very interesting - are they available in English translation do you know? Thanks MartaVdz!
@martavdz4972
@martavdz4972 Жыл бұрын
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Oh yeah, agreed! "That Holmes has limited powers in the great scheme of things?" Might very well be. It shows how much times had changed and sir Conan Doyle had changed, since Holmes was seen as an all-powerful protection against criminals like Jack the Ripper in the 1890´s. The last few cases are also more modest, no big state affairs 🙂 Unfortunately, it looks like the nine Chemical Stories haven´t been translated into English 😞 Which is a shame because they really are interesting. Well-built plots with unusual details. They include a story where a duke puts his diamonds in a bank safe but a month later, he finds worthless pebbles in their places. And a story where Holmes sees an oddly woven spider web in a garden and insists on investigating, because he deduces that someone is poisoning someone with a certain type of alcaloids in that house. I hope they will be translated into English some day 🙂 All the best to you, sir, it´s been an honour 😊 www.empik.com/przygody-chemiczne-sherlocka-holmesa-golembowicz-waclaw,p1180432960,ksiazka-p

As I listened through your closing comments I couldn’t help but feel a bit like the last time I got to speak with a close relative before his passing. While not of the same magnitude, this is the close of a chapter that has meant much to me over the past few years. I eagerly look forward to your future content, Greg, and 38:04 I do so with a bit of FOMO on the comfort the SH stories that accompanied many a walk, home project, and quiet fireside with a pipe. I remain confident of your ability and talent. I know I won’t be disappointed! A sincere heartfelt thanks for sharing your amazing talent! I remain indebted to you for it. Cheers!

Years ago I never really liked Sherlock Holmes stories when I either listened to them or saw TV series because somehow they weren’t 'right'. Then I heard you reading them Greg and then suddenly it all came to life. Your Sherlock was REAL he was the one I could believe in. He was exactly how I imagined him to be - he sounded just right! I fell in love with not only Sherlock but with Watson. You are so talented Greg! I have loved every story of your portrayal of these characters - it’s been a really magical journey and I keep forgetting to tell you this! But here we are - at last. Also, you have helped me through some really stressful times, whisked me away to so many amazing adventures - so, a VERY BIG THANK YOU! Greg!!!

I love your readings Greg and I will certainly revisit Holmes' stories in the future. I also love your 'Classic Breakdown' podcast reading of Dracula, please continue! For a follow up to Holmes, why not look up 'The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes' compilation that was put together by Hugh Greene in the 1970s, and which showcases a number of authors who were writing short detective fiction around the same time as Conan Doyle. The stories themselves are in the public domain and they are a great jumping off point for exploring the emerging market for detective fiction in the wake of Conan Doyle's success in the Strand Magazine. Keep up the excellent work Greg and many thanks for your excellent readings.

I can see Mr Holmes and Mr Watson as I listen to you. These have stirred a feeling of closeness in me to my dear departed dad who loved the Sherlock stories and who I know would have absolutely LOVED hearing your wonderful readings. I'm happy to say that I've not been listening to these in order so I do have many more stories to enjoy and I have no doubt that I shall start listening again once I have heard them all. Greg, brilliant as always! This is a most unexpected gem. As wonderful as Sherlock Holmes stories are, they do follow a predictable pattern insofar as the characters are concerned. But this piece…shows Holmes in a different light. His humanity, compassion and reverence for life is on full display and his clinical detachment is at last eclipsed. Thank you for sharing another side of Holmes!!

A very fine read my good sir Greg. At the end of the story I was slightly dissapointed with how little Sherlock Holmes did in this story, like in the Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb. But I do agree with your view of the story. It is thought provoking. Also you saying that it is the final canon story got me to wonder how I first heard of Sherlock Holmes. Was it a movie, the poster with the hat and pipe, a cartoon or did someone mention him or his proffession. In any case this story does show on of the greatest virtues that Sherlock Holmes can teach us in my view. He is a great listener. I look forward to more content from you. Cannot wait to hear what you will read for you next^^

My late parents loved the Holmes stories and were huge fans of Jeremy Brett's Holmes. Listening to these stories makes me feel close to them. Thank you so very much for giving me more than just highly skilled and enjoyable narration and entertainment. If it's at all possible, I'd love you to read the Harry Potter books. Thank you, Greg. You have given us a great gift. May I suggest that if you wish to consider any of Poe’s works, an ideal choice would be “The Assignation.” It is less known than those regularly taught in public schools, for obvious reasons, but is truly profound. “Hop-Frog” is another such a one. Obviously, you would tackle “Fall of the House of Usher.”
