Here’s a tip for using paint strippers, only pull stripper one direction. Do not go back and forth with the paint brush or in different directions. Stripper has paraffin in it and going different directions causes paraffin craze which breaks down the strippers ability to eat into the paint. This is something I learned over forty years ago when I worked for House of Kolor in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I believe that Jon Kosmoski taught me this himself. Good luck with your project.👍

You both are doing a great job , I love watching the two of you working together as a team, I wish my wife had helped me like that , she did help me when we were Dating, and when we got Married it all changed she was always had things to do, I guess that why after 20 years of marriage she called it quits, she just did not want to help me in my business, but anyway enough of that , Both of you seem so happy working on this car , May God bless you both always in Jesus Mighty name I pray 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Amen ❤

I remember my years in the shop with my dad rebuilding cars. We rebuilt his '57 Belair 2 door hardtop. We started with a complete car but searched around for better trim and things. I found the factory power steering parts, factory power brake parts and some trim pieces. Lots of stripping and sanding of course. We painted it black acrylic lacquer. Had to be straight! And that was in the mid 70s. Enjoy the build. We are.

The small pruple wheels your using are awesome. They keep the metal cool, come in different grits, can last if not pushed. I have used the larger 4.5 inches disk on a small eletric grinder. With the grinder you need to keep the disk moving so the metal will not get hot. Remember the 4.5 inch disk spins alot faster than the 2 inch purple disk.

That was really cool watching the process of you stripping the paint off the 57, I have a 1955 GMC short box and I need to do the same. I bought my 55 from my folks when I was 14yrs old and am 60 now. My 55 is the first vehicle I bought, I have talked to the guys down at Metal Works in Eugene Oregon about dipping it and plan on taking it there. With dipping I have been told it has to be totally blown apart, every nut, bolt, everything. When we start having dry weather here in Oregon I will get the project started. Thank you flying the flag and recognizing Veterans, much appreciated.

Some guy was probably really proud of the paint he put on that car at the factory. When I "undo" some work that someone did a long long time ago, I always try to imagine something about them. In this case, it was probably 1956 and he probably had a hairdo like Fonzie....or maybe like Richie Cunningham's dad...or maybe he was like Archie Bunker....haha.

I am looking forward to watching this restoration! I wish I had seen you do it 60 years ago as I had many opportunities over the years but was afraid to tackle such a project due to not having the knowledge, the money, or not having the space or the equipment. You might find more Bondo covering holes or ripped metal behind it, as I used it several times to hide rust holes over headlights or rocker panels, however I am amazed at the great condition of this car so far. I have painted three cars in my lifetime, all before I was 25. First was a 53 Chevy convertible with a dozen cans of red spray paint at age 15. Came out better than you might expect. Second was a '56 Chevy 2 dr. HT. copper and white. Borrowed a garage and used my dads sprayer and compressor. I was 17. I was 24 when I painted a '64 MGB, the most fun car to drive I ever owned. I so wish I had stored them all, especially a mint condition '58 Desoto Convertible.

I had a body shop for 20 years. The first 8 were restorations. The secret to stripping is to use a lot of stripper. It does all of the work for you. You virtually eliminate stripping. Get the gallon sized container. You may need more than one gallon. Bury it and let it sit. Then a simple plastic squeegee takes it off. Bondo needs to be ground off. Super, super important. When it is done being stripped, and you sand the surface be sure and use metal prep. I like the one DuPont makes. You see the spot where the paint just peeled off down to the metal. That is most likely caused by not “pickling” the paint as the car manufacturers call it while they are dipping the entire bare body into a tub of metal prep. You really want to take the rest of the shell to the sandblasters, industrial sized to get into the door jambs, under the hood, inside of the trunk, and motor compartment, the suspension, frame (remove undercoat first if it has any) trunk etc. What comes back to you is a body like brand new metal. If there is any rust anywhere it is gone. Makes it perfect for doing welds. (No fighting rust) Do the metal prep after it comes back from the sandblasters. Bury EVARYTHING in the metal prep. Then blow it dry, and let the dry overnight before priming. When it comes back from the blaster spend a good hour blasting the sand out of the frame channels. You do not want an industrial sized sand blaster (Think Caterpillar motor with a 4” nozzle) doing the outside panels because the heat that is generated will warp them. So liquid strip first. After blowing out all of the sand, the next thing you want to do is the metal prep/acid etch. Let that dry overnight. Then prime everything, even the areas you plan on doing welding on. You can grind back the edges of those surfaces where you want to weld. Put the first coat of primer on well thinned so it really grips. Then on subsequent coats you can thicken it up some for getting more buildup. After using the stripper you can sand the surface with some rougher sandpaper than you would normally use because metal is not soft so you can’t create for example 80 grit scratches that would be a disaster for prepping wood for example. You may want to use 220. Experiment around. I’m crying when I see you putting thin coats of stripper on there. Put it no thick. An extra gallon of stripper makes the whole job fly. Liquid strip under the hood flat sheet metal area, as well as the trunk so the sand blaster doesn’t do it. Everything I have told you will make this whole job fly, and give you. Show car quality results. PS: Glad to see you shifted over to gallons of stripper. If you put it on plenty thick there is no need to put a plastic cover on it. Let the stripper do all of the work. Pour the stripper on right out of the gallon, and then spread it around, yeah that thick. Mineral spirits afterwards is not a bad idea to get right of the stripper remnants, but I used to just go in after the stripper is dry and start sanding everything with a random orbital sander. You can see all sorts of little areas that are begging for you to do that. Love this channel.
