@@bobcuster8930 I am quite aware that there are several different school classifications in Nevada, with the smallest in the state playing 8-man football. I used to work for a TV production company that recorded the state championship games for all of the Nevada classifications. At the time the smallest division was 1A, and we even had several schools in and around Las Vegas that were 1A, including Trinity Christian, Indian Springs and Beatty, Nevada. However, the website for Jackpot School does not list football as an interscholastic sport. I went to high school in Arizona, and there was an eight-man football classification there as well.

What became Jackpot was founded in 1954 with the construction of the Horse Shu Club, which opened on March 18, 1954. At the time, the most northerly settlement in Elko County was Contact, about fifteen miles to the south. An enormous success, with one million pre-inflation dollars in prizes being issued by October 1955, the Horse Shu was quickly joined by a second casino, the Pair-o-Dice, 400 feet to the south, which opened August 18, 1954. Meanwhile, Cactus Pete's was originally established in Mineral Springs, twelve miles to the south, opening on July 2, 1954. Two years later, losing too much business to the Horse Shu, it relocated to its present site across the highway from its then chief competitor, opening on October 1, 1956. A hamlet grew up around the casinos; in May 1958, it became an unincorporated town named Horse Shu, but under pressure from Pete Piersanti, the name was withdrawn and the town became known as Unincorporated Township Number One. In April the following year, with the agreement of the Horse Shu owners (Don French had sold in December 1956) and Pete Piersanti, the town was renamed Jackpot. In 1960, the town was connected to the electrical grid, the old hand-cranked telephones were replaced with a modern system, a post office opened and a full-time sheriff's deputy was assigned. What had been just a remote spot in the high desert seven years earlier was now a 'mini-Reno.'

1:35 Looks like the dam on Salmon Falls Creek, and the Salmon Falls Creek reservoir backed up behind it. Been there a number of times for fishing, camping, and exploring the area. Salmon Falls Creek runs North out of Nevada and into Idaho, which, as you know, is where the dam and reservoir are. Been to Jackpot more times than I cared to keep track of. Used to fly a Cessna 182 or a Piper Cherokee Arrow down there once in a while - made the trip a lot shorter. The runway at Jackpot can be challenging on hot days (density altitude issue), but it's also a lot of fun! Nice to see you made it into the Gem State, if only by a handful of miles. The mobile homes are where most of the casino employees live, although a number of them commute to and from Twin Falls, which is the closest CITY to Jackpot (45 miles North). Rogerson is just a few miles north of the dam. They actually have a couple of gas stations there and a few groceries. There also is (or used to be, anyway) a pretty cool wildlife museum on the East side of the highway before you get there, accompanied by a gas station/convenience store. The nearest Indian Reservation is at Duck Valley, where the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes stay. The outdoor stadium is for entertainment events. They get some fairly big-name showbiz types in to play that venue sometimes, although they're mostly the "golden oldie" crowd, or the occasional current or recent Country Music entertainer(s). Rogerson was where the stagecoach (or wagon) came from that was robbed down around Jarbidge by the estimable Mr. Kuhl. back in 1916. Stay safe out there.

My grandmother, who was from southwest Oklahoma, taught 1st & 2nd grade in Jackpot from sometime in the late 60s to her retirement in 1982. Cactus Pete’s hosted a retirement party for her to show the town’s gratitude because no other teacher had ever stayed there for more than a year or two. During the time she was there the school only taught grades 1 - 8. All the high school kids had to take the daily 70 mile bus ride down to Wells. And, of course, the 70 mile ride back as well.

I spent an early spring a few years back installing new point-of-sale systems for a string of truck stops along I-80 beginning west of Reno and going to the Utah border. I'd visited Reno in the past, when I lived in the Bay area, but I'd never gone further east. It's a stark landscape out there, and in some places I stayed there was still snow on the ground. But I think two things caught my eye most. One was the strange looking horror house that was actually some type of do-it-yourself monument to some native American legend, and the other was how there were so many little hamlets, just clusters of single family homes, kind of shabby, along the highway. There'd be no store, gas station, or any other business in evidence, just this cluster of kind of sad little homes. I'd wonder where these people worked or got their groceries from.
