If you ever need cable ends and none are available get a piece of copper tubing, smash one end and drill a hole in it and then solder or crimp the other end on the cable. They seem to last longer when done this way and are cheaper :)

I would be willing to do that on my personal vehicles or my machines but not on someone else's truck. I could buy a few inches of copper tubing of different sizes for that but what color would it be when I'm ready to use it? I would have to buy it as I need it to keep it fresh. Also this one that I had trouble finding had a 1/2" stud hole and the wire size was only #2 (about 3/8") that copper tubing would not be wide enough to drill a 1/2" hole in it.

We had to start doing this because that coated crap was corroding really fast and the company we were getting real copper ends wanted to modify their contract a couple months after it was signed. I think its 5/8 air conditioning tubing is what we are making big ends out of. I used copper tubing & fittings that were at least 25 years old in my house, it was almost black, a wire brush & emery cloth cured that :)

Cables can get a hole in the insulation and corode the wire inside where you can jot see it.

Good video, good points. Please get some anti oxidation compound or dielectric grease. It is a excellent conductor, and keeps the terminal ends in good condition from road chemicals and age. I also use in the terminal ends that you crimp on. I have a 97 with the same electric issues. Thank you for posting the videos.

Gordon and others do you think it would help the situation if you tinned the wires with solder before putting on the crimp terminal.

I do that when I'm soldering the crimp-on's. Yes it would be better but a bit of over kill.

How do you bypass the mag switch to see if that is the problem? I have a FLC that occasionally only clicks. Not sure if it is the mag switch or the solenoid. Thanks

Just jump the 2 bigger wires on it together.

Bad mag switch. Not to say the starter and solenoid are not weak as well, they could be. Go for the cheapest and easiest to replace first.

if that black is on the wire its best to replace the wire or cut it back to where the black is no longer seen, if not thats jut a bandaid fix

Videos on this kind of work take a very long time to set up, have several different angles and lighting, sound, and then me trying to do the actual repair work with the cameras in my way and me in the way of the cameras, and then me running back and forth to the tool boxes, trying to remember which camera is on record or standby. I usually cheat on the camera setup because there just isn't time for that when I have to finish a repair job quickly so the truck can get back to work. When all the recording is all done then I transfer all those video files into the computer and then the editing begins which can take from an hour or two for a short video to a day or two for a longer multi cam HD or 4k video. The recent video of me driving on my job had 2 cameras and took about 6 hours to edit and 2 hours to upload when finished. It would have taken 4 hours to upload if I didn't reduce it to mp4 first. I will do a video on my camera setup and another on editing soon after I finish the videos on the different cameras I am using that I just started with the camera glasses a couple days ago.

I’m only 2:34 into the video and I already disagree with you, you said no way can it be the long wires running along side of the frame.. I had a problem with my truck starting for months and I changed everything on it, starter the relay under the wiper motor and also all 4 batteries and after all that I was changing something by my battery box and that’s when I found my problem all along.. It was one of the long hot wire burnt almost all the way through... All that money I spent and it was just a hot wire.. So, yeah, they can also be why it won’t start

OK so your cable was rubbing on something and got a hole worn through it and shorted out on the frame and started burning through the copper. Sorry to hear that. This truck on the video is the same setup as mine and I know that would not be posible without someone changing the way the cables run through the frame or adding something to the frame or the cables and air hoses in that run that could rub a hole in the insulation.

Here’s a tip you can try I buy 1/2 inch copper couplings from home improvement store way cheaper than the pre made ends smash 1side and drill hole in it or the copper pipe and cut to size you need

Not a big fan of the cable ends that are made from thin flattened tubing, much prefer to fit the heavy duty cast ones. They seem to grip better and last a lot longer. Great video mate.

Would almost be worthwhile to yank out the starter to have a look-see at the business end of it, and while it's out, put all the threaded terminals to a wire wheel and clean 'em all up. Would that be a MT-40 or MT-42 in that truck? I guess in recent years, MT-39's have become popular, they're a reduced gear starter. The DD-13 and DD-15 family of engines seems to call for those. As you mentioned about how muriatic acid (which does a fine job of cleaning) can have a tendency to wick up inside of the insulation and keep on eating away filth and copper too, that's what that nasty, evil liquid crap they put on the roads does too. That magnesium chloride crap will not only find its' way past the tiniest splits or nicks in the insulation of any wiring, and once in there, it travels quite a distance undetected inside the insulating cover, until it has turned many feet of (once good) copper into green fuzz that you can't see. The old mechanic's trick of probing into a wire is a big no-no anymore, as that provides an entry point for the evil MgCl2 crap to get a foot-hold inside that wire afterward. I enjoy that sort of work on cleaning up electrical connections and keeping them strong, but it's hard to enjoy it when you know the vehicle is going to be assaulted by the road chemicals next time it turns a wheel.

Yes those road chemicals will damage any exposed wiring, that's why I always solder any repairs on wiring looms outside of the vehicle and often inside too, the battery cables are the only exception because of their size. Thanks for watching.
