Punchline destroying the cipher but being the least known epitomizes the late 90s and the turning point for rap. Punchline, Wordsworth, Last Emperor, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and a gang of other MCs were victims of the time period - and that's just Rawkus records artists

Yep. That was the era when hip hop was shifting to the more commercial sound where cats were rapping about expensive champagne, jewelry, going platinum in sales, and getting money. A lotta cats were dumbing down the lyricism for more dollars. The new cats of that era who stayed true to the art were not getting that push and recognition that they would've gotten had they came out in the late '80s or early half of the '90s. You named some heavy spitters and all of them are only known to the hip hop heads who were about the real back in that era.

I remember this shit yo I had this All Eyes On Hiphop VHS in like 98/99 it also had Ali Vegas & Half-A-Mil, Nature in QB w/ the Wild Gremlins, and I think Jay-Z & Akinyele performing In Connecticut. Dutch & Spade had a back & forth freestyle outside a truck, and a Major Figgers interview. What a Time To be Alive!!!!!

50 cent for a good while was like the Mike Tyson of rap. Scary, in the studio, or in the streets not many wanted to go against 50.
