Here in rain-washed Ireland, we are very pround of our second generation immigrants when they are culturally successful... it's a delight to see them on the sportsfield, the stage, the gallery. Here, success has different measurements; your kids are a sucess if they speak with a thick, local accent and are good neighbours and colleagues and understand the jokes.

My ancestors who arrived in North America often came from war-caused poverty and were willing to start from nothing and carve out their own success. But the jobs that could provide success in the 1600-1800s are not the same as today's. I'd be curious to compare immigrants who farmed in 17t0, 1850, 1950, and now. This was very interesting, thank you. 😊
