As someone that has never played MtG and only knows anything about it from the 5e books, I love the Ravnica book. I blended it into my version of Eberron and my players love it! It’s one of my favorite setting books, right up there with Eberron, Wildemount and Ravenloft.

I really liked your commentary on each of these! I loved Planescape and Fizbans for the flavor of it but your criticisms are very valid. I hope we see more books like Book of Many Things and Van Richtens.

The main problem with the 5e publishing cycle was that they wanted to appeal to both players and DMs with each product so they put players options alongside DMs eyes only content. Tasha’s was the pinnacle of this with puzzles alongside subclasses but Volo’s and Mord’s had it with races and monsters. At least they offered tons of good lore.

29:09 IIRC Book of Many suffered from QA issues in producing the deck of cards that delayed the release to a point where it conflicted with the beginning of their promotion campaign for OneDnD and the new core books, so they basically had to just take the loss and move on so they could hit their goals for the 2024 books.

I don't think you're giving Ravnica enough credit. It sounds like the setting isn't to your taste, but for the folks that are interested (me!) I think it's really well detailed and gives me a lot of cool material to create characters and run games. For me the book was an A, but even if you don't like it, I think you at least should be willing to place it with the other "cool material, niche audience" books like Fitzban's and Glory of the Giants at C tier.

I find that a book which dives into a subject is a good idea, when making several books. Exploring dragons makes good sense. I was under the assumption it was a specialized Xanathar' Guide and hence wasn't interested. You made me much more interested in Fizbans Treasury of Dragons.

I wish 5E would do themed books like 3E. By terrain types or creature types. I like the idea of a full book on Aberrations for eg. But they screwed up the dragon one, so... The 3E and 4E Draconomicons were 10 times better than Fizbans. A one creature type book can be done. Previous editions did fiend and undead ones very well too.

Pretty damn close to how I'd rank them. I'd certainly drop the DMG down 5 or 6 places. It's only saved by the magic items section for me. Van R, Eberron and Theros are superb settings. I love the piety system in Theros and how that book makes the gods really present in the world. The monster manual is really necessary because you need it for all the adventure supplements etc. But the monster designs are really weak, far too many sacks of hit points and far far too few evocative abilities. It's a problem with wotc 5e generally their monsters lack lore and in the rare cases where Volos or Fizbans gave you the lore the mechanics still struggled to bring it to the table. I'm still salty that when they made Mordenkainens Monsters of the Multiverse they tinkered with the stat blocks, mostly for the better, but then left out the very best sections of Volos and Tome of Foes and discontinued those books.
@TheUncannyDani5 ай бұрын
I would rank Humblewood C or D. I'm DMing it and it has a lot of flaws and oversights. It feels at times like they rushed the project and moved on to add-ons and Humblewood Tales and Humblewood 2, without fully delivering a helpful guide and strong module. I recommend it to extremely young players who wouldn't be critical of the societal and political problems that come up in the module.

When you need a magic dolphin it is the book for you! Still missed they left out all the lair section from Volos when they went for the multiverse approach of taking monsters out of the Worlds they inhabit and create to leave us with floating hit point sacks and generic 3 a day abilities and random recharge AoEs
