A lot of compressors having burning motor problems. This brand is Ingersoll Rand from the Tractor Supply. Only time will tell if this video has the fix or if the US has been delivered thousands of Junk Overseas Motors. Ingersoll Rand Burning up Motors This is how I Fixed it.

This one was used to run Da sanders as well. Lots of good solutions and tips in the comments below. Im thinking that ive heard some good words about the Harbor freight pumps but havent tried them myself. Whichever you go with find a good motor and add a magnetic switch. Any motors similar to these are junk. The compressor in the video still working well but move to the mechanic's shop. Runs Impacts and lifts. Thanks for watching and the kind comments. Glad you found me to.

You have just hit the tip of the ice-burg on air compressors. I have purchase several air compressors over the last 60 some years. The first one for my use I was advised to get a "5hp". That compressor served me very well so every air compressor I purchase after that said "5hp--MAKE" painted on the side. Most of the time they said "hp--5" on the motor. This time as I looked at the various compressors, they looked about the same size as my 5hp had been, but they had no obvious 'hp" rating on the tank nor did the motor say "hp-5"; it said "hp-- spl". Also, I have a problem accepting advice on air compressors from a clerk that moments before was an expert on "dog food" to another customer. So I picked one that looked about like my old 5hp compressors. As I "broke it in" I clocked it and it took 8 minutes to get to shut-off pressure. On the tank it did say if you have problems "DO NOT TAKE IT BACK TO WHERE YOU PURCHASED IT-- Call this 800 number". I called it and they answered the phone with, "Campbell Hausfield". I said I was calling DeWalt. The person explained that his company makes many compressors and put various company names on them. He explained that they don't rate air compressors by "horse power". They are rated by "Cubic Feed per Minute ---CFM's. I asked how many CFM's was my 5hp compressor rated at so I could decide which CFM air compressor would equal my 5hp. He couldn't say. As you, I saw the "Assembled in the USA", so I looked at each component and found that the "tank" MIGHT have been the only USA part on it. Stanley Black and Decker have purchase many old US brand names such as Craftsman, Proto, Mac and gone through and made product changes so they could make a bigger profit.

It couldn't have been said any better. While working at Sam's Club, I watched a man come in and switch all the stickers on the batteries we had in stock. They went from Exide to Duracell right before my eyes. What a deception with name brands. Thank you for sharing.

I put a 5hp Leeson on mine (SS5) then also added a magnetic motor starter on mine later on because the pressure switches are junk as you said. Never had any issues since.

Best solution ever. So much weight off the shoulders knowing you wont have to fix a broken compressor instead of just using it.

I have this same 5hp compressor with 60 gal. tank bought from Tractor Supply. After about one year service the contacts on the pressure switch welded together. Tractor Supply had an exact replacement in stock. The new pressure switch states inside that it is intended for 2 hp load. I installed a Square D magnetic starter rated at 7.5 hp. Now I am having issues with blowing capacitors. The main breaker rated at 25 Amp in my power panel trips often. Not sure whether the motor is of poor quality, the capacitors are not adequate or if the unloader feature is failing. Nothing short of a recall would make me want to purchase this type equipment again.

If its the start capacitor burning up. Once the motor starts the motor should switch it to the run capacitor within seconds. If it doesn't and uses that start capacitor to run it will burn it up. The start capacitor and start winding are de-energized, usually by a centrifugal switch inside the motor. Now that you have bypassed the switch from that capacitor the burning has moved to the capacitor. Im thinking either the windings are bad or the switch is stuck or broken. Back pressure valve could be bad but not to likely knowing the history of these motors. Thanks for your support and let me know if you need further help.

The wire gauge and breakers are exactly the reason for so much failure on these motors. The crank up amps are the kick start of this motor, smaller wire other than 8 gauge will brown out on startup. This motor needs all available amps to start it, running amps are one thing, have enough amps on start up is another. If you have any thing less than 8 gauge wire from the breaker box, your headed for motor failure.

Also, many of these compressor designs lack any kind of pressure relief on startup, so when you combine a cheap motor (and super high inrush current) with cheap wiring and cable, PLUS ask it to start against full cut-in pressure, it's a recipe for failure.

Get you a weg electric motor it’s more money but it is a commercial motor I’m a body and paint guy and we run the heck out of our snap on compressor we burned up 2 other motors that were some cheap azz motor we got from parts store. My ingersoll rand 3 hp 60 gall has had the motor replaced twice so motor quality motors are crucial for longevity! Thanks 🙏 for the content I subbed quickly 😂

Ill keep that recommendation in mind. When you mention weg, Im thinking that the compressor in that axillary tank video I recently did has that name brand motor. Its a year old high dollar compressor from Eaton Aire that burnt a motor. (US was its brand) The motor they sent that I installed I believed was one of those weg motors. Warrantied but its cost is $2700 and took 3 of us to lift it up there. What a beast. The auxiliary tank was a blessing for the painter there. I had my doubts and was wrong. That extra tank cured the painters water problem 100% kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX_Flmt_n9eXerM Thanks for watching

The TS5 appears to be the pump model only. And while made in India might not seem like ultimate quality, it seems like its your motor and pressure switch giving you all the problems.

If you have problems with that motor again, I'd recommend getting a motor with an rpm of 1700-1800 instead of 3600 rpm and double the size of the drive pulley. Them "compressor duty" motors have too small of frame size for the output they got. You might have to modify the motor mount to work with it as the original motor would be a 56 frame and the low speed one would likely be 184 frame
@CaptFerd
@CaptFerd Жыл бұрын
That is a great option to consider.

If I went with a slower motor I would need to double the size of the original pulley? I thought It would need a smaller pulley to make it spin faster. Am I wrong about that? Would I need to go with a bigger pulley? Thanks for any info.

So, is there a comparable compressor for just a little extra cast that don't need a bunch of extras added into it to keep it from burning out motors? $1500.00 compressor should be a good compressor, but I've seen to many reviews of these same things you said in this video. So what would compare to it for $200-300 extra dollars?

Eaton air in Dayton Ohio has nice air compressors. Tractor supply wants $1600 for this same one now. Heres a beast 7.5hp for $500 more with 5 year warranty and trust me they stand behind them and have excellent customer service. eatoncompressor.com/product/7-5-hp-air-compressor-single-phase-v4-80-gallon-vertical/ Weve bought 2 since this video. This one is still running fine. That magnetic starter makes a big difference. They have anouther line they sell Named the freight train. 1 year warranty on this one. We have 1 of those. Almost the same price as the TSC junkard. eatoncompressor.com/product/freight-train-5hp-2-stage-80-gallon-air-compressor/

I have an Ingersoll Rand 5hp 60gal 2stage i bought 20yrs ago. Its an oldie but goodie...100% American made...i have had zero issues. The only thing I've ever done is change the oil a few times. Even the air filter is clean. It's a shame that everything you buy these days is a P.O.S.💩

when a motor has SPL in its HP rating be aware it is not a 5hp motor it is about 2.75HP as the one you are showing . A true 5HP motor will draw 20-22 Amps at 230V and needs a magnetic starter or contactor, and those import pressure switches can barely handle 2HP without burning up the contacts .square-D pressure switches do last. Also the S.F. (Service Factor) of a quality motor may be 1.15 as compared to cheap imports with a SF of 1

@CaptFerd
@CaptFerd 4 ай бұрын
@@jt-fs8wxIf you're using the same starter box as the one in the video and everything is wired just as shown, it's very possible that the box is faulty. With the tank pressure absent and the switch set to on, A1 should be hot. The magnetic starter should click, and you should have power coming out the bottom end. If there's no click, check the yellow wire for bad connections and ensure the reset button hasn't been tripped. If everything seems okay and there's still no power at the bottom, then the starter is likely bad. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue, and I'll help as much as I can.
