We can use a model to help us divide a decimal by a whole number. We can use base 10 blocks, or a quick picture. In decimal division, a flat of 100 squares represents 1 whole, a long is 0.1, and a small cube is 0.01. Using a quick picture or drawing, a square can represent 1 whole, a line can represent 0.1, and a small circle can be 0.01. We can draw 10 smaller units to replace a larger unit, then cross off the larger unit, so it can be divided into equal groups. We can make our own models by shading in grids of 100 squares as 1 whole, one column as 0.1, and a small square as 0 01. If we use a paper model, we can divide one larger model into 10 smaller models, to share them into equal groups by cutting them apart. Because multiplication is the inverse operation for division, we can check our answer by multiplying the divisor by the quotient. If their product is equal to the dividend, we know our quotient is correct. We can use multiplication to help us find a quotient. We think of a basic fact, that will use the amount of the divisor, to equal the dividend. We pay attention to the decimal point to insert it into its proper place in the quotient. We solve one word problem involving modeling dividing decimals by a whole number.
