I had a 1990 model 6.2 when I lived in Alaska, I started it once at -47 F. I won't mention wrapping the engine with an electric blanket, having a percolator style block heater, battery blankets and oh, yeah, a blower heater blowing up under it. Drove it out of the mountains that day, the engine never warmed up until we came down to lower elevations even though the whole from of the truck was covered. It is only a fond memory because it was 30 years ago.

Always amazed at people that run their starters for almost minutes at a time. You must reeeally not be worried about melting wires or burning it out.

I’m always amazed that people repeatedly bitch about this. Starters DON’T just fail from being used. And wires don’t magically melt. Get a grip and float back down to reality.

I think it's safe to use a starter continuously for about 15 seconds. I don't think he went any longer than that, so the starter should be good.

That’s nothing these 6.2 and 6.5 starters are made for this. If the batts can hold up got to keep cranking build some heat. Only other way is to add some laughing gas

No Problem for the startermotor nor the pinion since it‘s continously engaged and not going back and forth. The coils shouldn‘t overheat at this temp either.

This thing chugs and farts and carries on like a steam train initially, and then just starts to SING. It's like the inverse of a pack a day smoker that can belt out a great tune... Sounds horrible and produces no smoke initially, and then just starts to SING and bellow smoke at the same time :P

Put civilian 12 glow plugs in and take power from the passenger side of the resistor. When the glow plug board burns out put a switch. Mine starts in the cold no problem. I think I had 3 bad glow plugs when I fixed it

It looked green like the 1008 or 1028. You can check the resistance of the glow plugs without taking them out.

I had a 91 with the commercial application 6.2 they use to put in the old school busses. It had over a million kms when I sold it. Sounded awesome but was it ever gutless. Can’t help but miss it though. It gets pretty cool in Canada but as long as she had healthy batteries she never let me down.

Gutless old dog of a motor.. but they were pretty cool if you never wanted to pass anyone ever. Have an 84 C2500 Silverado with over 600k miles on one of these (w/ overhaul) truck still starts and runs no problem.

@@Catrik we used our 84 as a highway truck mostly. It saw use on the farm.. but being the nicer truck (Silverado) we used it for highway pulling. We have a 77 Scottsdale that saw alot more use on the farm.

It will shoot epic flames. I once poured water from a cup in to the exhaust just because. I fired up the truck and it shot a huge load of soot water on the side of the white van next to me. That was embarrasing.

-25c is -35c with wind chill that’s -40f for you Americans and same for Canadians basically -40c after wind chill It was a cold winter but that truck needs new glow plugs and it needs them to be cycled a few times, also the glow plugs don’t light that long on my truck I have a feeling he waited for them to cool down before cranking to make the video dramatic, we do love our 6.2 6.5 engines because their reliable beasts! I don’t blame him for makin her look tough!😏

Yes they do. Mine were not properly working and indirect injection diesel engines are not very good at starting in the cold in general.
