I used to be in the scouting when I was young. We had an old barge (spits) of a 126 feet long powered by a 6-71. The barge was built in Belgium in 1908 and this engine was later fitted. When she was still earning her keep she could load 350 metric tons (about 385 short tons). She was a loud and slow barge but I always loved the engine music.

My Little Yanmar diesel on my lawn mower is happy at full ass whose open/governor/ 3600rpm. My 7.3 idi on the other hand likes to hang out at 1500-2000. She’ll do 3300, but I rarely take her there when I need to pass a moron. Most newer diesels need to be run hard. But yeah, Detroit’s are the the one Diesel engine that need to be driven hard, they sound like they’re going fast, but it’s a 2stroke so it’ll sound like it’s doing 5600rpm when it’s only doing 3300rpm.

@@jamesgeorge6551 I said non turbo models. Every diesel engine, being 2 or 4 stroke can be fueled to run many horsepower ratings. My point was they don't make double the power of similar size 4 stroke. Right now you can buy a similar size marine cummins engine with 550 hp. Yes, the detroits ran the world for decades, but they are not the best of the best when it comes to power.

I find the oil pressure interesting. If cold, it should easily run up to 50 #'s. If warmed up, then when run up to 1,100rpm, then it should raise toward 60#'s, then drop back to 50 #'s. They have a pressure relief valve that releases above 50 #'s. Otherwise pretty engines.
@johnb41836 жыл бұрын
oldcarboater he was talking about 140 / 150 psi oil pressure =??
@spartonboat16 жыл бұрын
Most internal combustion engines run around 50#'s (pounds of oil pressure). The Oil Pressure gauge is on the lower right part of the gage panel and the needle is sitting just under 20#'s. The low reading could be due to the sending, although sometimes the oil is brought directly to the gauge, via a metal pipe. So again, on a nominal (what it should be) basis, it is low for a cold engine. 20-25#'s is normal at idle, when fully warmed up.

I prefer a 40-50, but if the owner thinks its alright, oh well. Its still a great engine..

@@prevost8686 you're right! Years in the fire service kindled my love of the 8v92, the smoothness, the power, and the sound! In the engine bay of my good friend's Country Coach rests a lovely example. Only oil leak we've run into was the accessory plate behind the air compressor, just loose bolts. New gasket and a tidying up was all she needed. It was fun pulling the bed cabinetry, Country Coach cabinets are a joy to behold, built very well with the idea of allowing access to the Prevost's access door. The engine cradle is also brilliant, doing an inframe bearing job looks simple, But building a proper dolly to pull everything when needed will be nice. We replaced the exhaust system a few months ago, the original muffler was showing its age. The new system surprised us both! The sound is a wee bit louder, but it purrs exactly like a fire apparatus. A bonus, the pyrometers show lower temperatures, and the blowby has decreased. I tease Doug, I really want to redo that silver paint in all its glory. Mind you, there's no oil on the exterior of this Detroit!
