Yes I have had issues where I needed whole new engine (thank you warranty) but since then, no issues *knock on wood* I’m glad to know that 15 and newer are nearly bug free!! BUT! Yep, modern gas engines seem to be much more reliable. I have a 2005 Silverado 5.3. In 175,000 miles the only thing I've ever replaced is the water pump. I prefer GM V8's because they use what works. "Old fashioned" cam in block, cast iron block, etc. The water pump itself was only 4 bolts and took less than 1 hour to replace. I don't have experience with modern Diesel engines, but I owned a 1992 Dodge Ram 3500 dually. It had the Cummins and a manual transmission. I don't recall doing anything to that other than changing the oil

I own 2016 F250 XL 2 wheel drive 6.7 liter power stroke diesel. Don’t know what you guys are doing to your trucks but mine runs like a champ. Full delete. Dual bypass filters. Oil cooler. Get my oil analysis don’t every 10,000 miles. (I have 58,000 plus miles on her)Pull a 12,000 lb fiver through the mountains of Tennessee. Doesn’t burn oil. Run 0w40 100% synthetic Amsoil diesel Signature series. Have a tow tune and a Looney tune from Quick tricks out of Florida. Get 14-15 miles a gallon while towing and 21-23 miles cruising with my looney tune in the city and highway. Nice😎Built Ford Tough! Remember guys and gals, it’s all in the way you maintain your diesel. Never neglect your truck no matter what your make. Love your vids👍🏻

That valve failure is generally caused by a broken glow plug in the first 6.7's tip breaks off the glow plug, there is tons of info online about it and updated glow plugs.

I bought a not bulletproofed, 05 6.0L, did some research and right away added a EGT probe and have been monitoring it. Pulling a 20ft 10k enclosed trailer I see EGTs around 1000-1100 and ECT's creeping up close to 205. this is around town towing. Planning a round trip from Salt Lake to Sacramento to pick up a Jeep. I'm just not sure what temps to be afraid of. There are a lot of long climbs and I really don't want to break anything. Thanks for your time. Neil

That's why I'm still rolling the 7.3. Bought it 3 years ago with 142,000 miles on it and I'm now 223,000 miles. With original injectors. Oil changes are religiously changed every 3,500 mi. And archoil to top it off. Still stomping the throttle @ 18 mi per gal. It's the most reliable truck I've ever owned. Its a 2000 superduty.

this lack of parts was also a problem for the light duty 2015s, I have seen on the F150 forums that owners of crashed trucks have waited SEVERAL MONTHS for bedside skins to come in to fix their trucks because every bedside skin that ford was stamping out was going straight to the production lines and none were being allocated for the parts network.

A big problem with making a good design is the penny pinchers who want to cut cost of the design as well and force the use of bad components. The engineer isn't stupid but he is forced to change a design to cut costs as well.

Hummin Cummins all the other engines were designed by other companies. The 6.7 is a Ford engine and I think they are trying to make the engine themselves now so they can dial in there own product. I think one they get the bugs out of this engine they will have one of the best engines. Did you know the exhaust and intake runners in the heads are reversed? The exhaust comes out of the top of the head keeping all the heat rising.

Engines produce a certain amount of smog within the cylinder, and the more smog in the cylinder, the greater the need for more smog filtering equipment in the exhaust system. At some point better smog filtration isn't enough for the next EPA and CARB smog test, so the manufacturers have to develop another engine that makes less smog within the cylinder. In addition, some of that extra smog gadgetry kills horsepower. To get an idea about an engine having less horsepower due to smog equipment, just analyze the performance of Corvettes from 1972 to 1980. Some cars had to be cancelled due to engines that couldn't be made smog legal, one example is the Mazda RX7 Twin Turbo. It was only sold in the USA from 1993 to 1995, but was sold in other countries until 2001 or 2002. A Mazda RX7 would never be complete without a rotary engine, and those are very difficult to make smog legal, so that is why it was cancelled in the USA. There are, however, many instances where engines can have incremental improvements and stay in use for a very long time. The GMC 6.2 diesel was introduced in the early 1980s and over it's production, it was increased to 6.5 liters, given a turbocharger, given a computerized injection pump, and the last one was used in 2002 in the GMC Savanna van. The Cummins 5.9 also underwent several changes, and although the 6.7 Cummins has a different engine block from the 5.9, it still shares a large number of components. Volkswagen introduced a 1.9L diesel during the late 1980s and it was a non-computerized engine with prechambers. In the late 1990s, they went from a prechamber design to a direct injection design, and the mechanical distributor pump was modified to work with a computer. The block from the 1.9 non-turbo mechanical injection engine changed very little when they made a direct injection engine from it. In 2004, VW was forced to change the design because a computerized distributor pump couldn't meet smog requirements, and so they had to create the Pump Duse engine. I could bring many gasoline engines into this discussion, but it wouldn't as relevant since this channel focuses on diesels.

I still don't know why Ford and GM insist on building high revving/high horsepower V8's versus a Low-revving/high torque Straight six and using an aluminum head. Aluminum heads are cheaper to cast and machine, but are more prone to cracking and dissimilar metal corrosion(more frequent coolant changes). Damn the engineers.

I somewhat disagree, look at the Ramber V-8's, they didn't have the time to thoroughly test the new engine so they used forged cranks and rods, they were over built. Some of it is cost engineering, they need to make the specification but also need to make that spec at the lowest possible cost. Some of it's quality vs production, meaning on the pilot line they're okay but when they ramp up to full production they fall out of control or the ability to make or assemble parts that meet the specification. Yes there is the feedback loop that you talked about where the more units in the field equates to more knowledge about the product vs customer expectations.

It’s not just hardware that has this problem, software engineering also suffers from the “you just don’t know” problem; maybe even more, since the software has to run on a physical computer (hardware), connected to the other stuff (engine, tranny, dashboard instruments, and who know what else) and all it takes is one little intermittent hardware problem to throw a wrench into the works (i.e. discover a hidden bug in the computer programming) that could lead to tragic results. There are no “simple” solutions. Way to tell it like it is, Bill!

Hey I was just wondering if you have ever heard this my friend has an 05 Ford with a 6.0 motor and he had changed the oil too synthetic oil the high synthetic and it started a small skip and a mechanic told him that you could not run full synthetic in that motor that you had to run regular motor oil in that motor so he changed the oil and it quit skipping have you ever heard of such things like that????

the best part is when they have a fix but have a shit ton of outdated parts that they still run through the pipeline before they start to move the updated part. they have to deplete the parts supply. same thing Cummins did with their 8.9 isl-g. they knew they had aluminum piston failures but still ran the aluminum till all the stock was depleted then they switched to the steel piston.

I used to know the exact date when I owned a 2011 6.7. They changed the heads in March or April of 2011. So your June 2012 pickup has the newer heads and glow plugs. Only common issue a 2012 will have is the turbo bearing going out cause they’re still the ceramic.

Everytime I watch this video I Come Away with a smile knowing that yes I did buy a ram but I rather deal with transmission issues down the road then with diesel engine issues up front it's amazing how people that watch these videos continue to keep on buying Powerstroke products knowing everything that bill says and that you're going to have issues before 200,000 miles that are going to require you to spend thousands I have a 96 Ford F250 with 283000 miles on it a 5.8 351 Windsor leaks oil burns oil 2 quarts a week easily 3000 Miles every two weeks put on it and runs 10 hours a day driving and idle time not one valve cover or oil pan off the truck still even has the original transmission amazing how 20 + years later the quality has improved but major issues still persist with the power stroke before 200,000 miles my 7.3 had six hundred and twenty-three thousand miles and 3 Transmissions but the motor still ran great why can't Ford build a quality product like that smh
