Because after the 2008 everyone started having to do more work with less people. Then when the economy got better, employers just figured that was normal and didn't fully replace the same staff/worker ratio. There are a couple of people in my company who skip/shorten lunches, but I figure that's their problem and I add more value than those people and just take a full hour which management has no problem with. If they did I would leave the company.

Yeah man, there's been more than a few times that I've worked till eleven P.M. starting at eight A.M. in a cabinet shop cause the boss was crying about needing the job done. Unfortunately, from what I've seen in many fields of work, like mine, the boss slacks, and the employees have to pick up his or her mess. Lol, sorry for the salt. But yeah, I think a large part of it is pressure from the 'superiors'.

America has "employment at will" which means employers can fire an employee at any time for almost any reason, without any kind of liability. Therefore America has developed a "workaholic" culture which means people are obsessed with their jobs out of fear of being fired for being like 1% less productive than their co-workers.

As for Americans that "love their jobs so much", our employers put a lot of pressure on us to get everything and even more done since they don't want to hire another person to do the excess work. They prefer to make their existing employees do the work of two people. That's why we work crazy hours, skip lunch sometimes, stay way too late, work overtime, and are stressed out to the max.

I work retail it's not just black Friday it's now Thanksgiving. You start at five pm so no enjoying time with family and friends. Gulp down food that you may have had to get up early to make. Knowing there is nothing that is so important that people need that they couldn't get the next day! Also if you are ordering on line for a store pick up that means ten or more people did not even get a day off because they have to pick those items and get them ready for a store pick up. And that's each and every store in a chain!

I work in a hospital. You can't just leave your patients to go eat. It's inhumane. Many of us work double shifts. On the plus side of that, sometimes at night you can watch tv when it's quiet but it's not relaxing. because you have to be ready to run in an emergency. Occasionally we order a pizza but that's tiny bites on the run. And, yeah, the bathroom issue lol

That's true. How do they even know when it's Black Friday when they don't have Thanksgiving. They'll be doing their Black Friday shopping after Christmas.

They just follow the US Thanksgiving holiday (at least the retailers do and then just advertise the dates that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are). I think there were proposals to just make it the last Friday of November regardless of US Thanksgiving (which could make it a week after US Black Friday some years), but was decided by retailers to be the same day as the US.

The spread of Black Friday sales across the world accelerated with the growth of online shopping. Online retailers are competing all over the world, not just in the US, so merchants in the UK, or on the European continent, or NZ, or Australia, or wherever, felt the pinch as local shoppers began going on line to take advantage of all those crazy American sale prices.

I asked that,, too (I'm in Canada) "why are we doing Black Friday when our Thanksgiving is October?" but my brother , who has managed and district managed and run retail outlets for ages explained. Black Friday has nothing to do with Thanksgiving anywhere else. They just saw a good thing happening down there and figured it's a good way to make money. But also, he said that by the end of November, it's safe to celebrate that your year is in the black.

Amy Moseley Smith - I am sure that you are polite and respectful, and some might even call it Southern charm. In no way do I intend to contradict your personal statement. I was born and raised in NYState, about 50 miles out of NY City, the supposed epicenter of rudeness in this world. I've also traveled the USA quite extensively, in particular, the south, which I am quite fond of. You'd probably be surprised how kind and helpful NYs can be, in general. They might not be as polite and respectful as you are used to, but they will almost at least be kind and helpful. If you were to come to a stop, on the busiest sidewalk of Manhattan and just say, can somebody help me? 'I don't know where I am, or how to get to where I want to go', it won't take long for someone to help you. Believe me, I've been there many times. I've been in the same situation down south, with the same results. Are the people more polite, in general, down south, yes, they are. Can they be as rude tho, yes, no doubt, but in a backhanded way, meaning not as directly so. I tend to address people as I've been introduced to them as, until they ask me to do otherwise. So, I've noticed that down south, young women, children of friends of mine, are introduced as 'Miss Lizzie', or whatever, so I would call them that, which is odd for a northener to do. Up north, just to be polite, I would call a woman under 30 'Miss' and a woman over '30', M'am, as to do otherwise, might be considered an insult. Of course, there is that uncomfortable age at which you are not sure of where they lie, so you stand a good chance of messing up and offending someone. Usually, handled gracefully, and from then on out, I'd refer to them as they wish. Up north, I might call someone Miss Beauregard, but never 'Miss Lizzie', unless asked to do so, which essentially, never happens. My question is, why is it that down south, support staff, of the feminine gender, meaning mostly waitress' or maids, are referred to as 'Miss - So and so', even when they are clearly over the age of 30? Is it a sign of respect or disrespect? As a northener, it's seems disrespectful, as if they are no more than a child. Do you have any insight into that? Back to my basic point, I have been put in my place by a few 'servants', in that I didn't know how things were properly done, all in a very kind and polite manner, but reading between the lines, it was quite rude. Not to say it wasn't deserved on my part, as I didn't know any better, but southern hospitality can be quite rude as well. ps - this is not a racial thing at all. Black, white or Hispanic, it happens equally. For clarity, if it means anything, I am white, and bit of Chactau. Point being, race is not an issue here at all.

@@shaunea.8930 - well, of course people from New Jersey are more rude than NYers and I've noticed it too. What would you expect, as they seem to have an inferiority complex, as NJ on the whole, is nowhere near what NYState is, other than by vacinity. I actually like New Jersey and have many friends there, but in particular, the closer you are to Manhattan, on the other side of the Hudson River, the more arrogant they are, particularly if you car is wearing NY license plates. The cops will do their best to violate you Constitutional rights, but it doesn't often get them more than a proper lawsuit, as everyone and his cousin in NY, has a lawyer in the family, and will see you to hell in court, just for the fun of it. It's part of the joy.

I am an American and I live in Argentina and I never realized alot of these things until I moved here. It blew my mind people actually take lunch breaks, or breaks at all. It blew my mind that students in university would JUST be students, and not work too. It is not even an option in the States unless you are filthy rich. The idea that is pushed in American culture is that the more you over work the more successful you will be- everything is gaged by productivity (not who you are per say). This has pros and cons, and is a large reason America is so successful but most people have horrible mental health. So, it is a toss up.

Technically, and this may be different by state, you MUST have a lunch break after 6 hours. but those laws might be out of date by 15 years. Those who fined the companies was the department of labor, and I believe that's a state level fine.

It’s easier to do it on my break so I can leave on time to go home and enjoy my time at home without worrying about stuff I didn’t get done. I also want to provide the best care to my class. There just isn’t enough time in the day sometimes. I wonder how the study defined watching tv. The tv being on or actually paying attention to the show? As soon as people get home from work/school or whatever the TV is turned on and people watch or sleep in front of the TV nightly. But, I thought that was a world-wide habit. What an informative article that does not GENERALIZE/ EXAGGERATES one bit!

I think a large part of the crazy work hours is that we need to work 40+ hours/week to be able to have health insurance. So we work nonstop to be able to go to the doctor when needed.

I had an office job for 7.5 years. I hated it but I was so good at it, that I kept getting raises so I stayed. We were forced to eat at our desks on busy days and we worked 12 hours per day. That was no choice of any worker. We either worked through our break or get a write up or get fired.

Many office workers, especially in technical positions, constantly work on tight deadlines. Eating lunch at one's desk may reduce (unpaid) evening overtime. Reducing evening overtime is especially helpful for those who have children at home (or want some sort of social life).

As an American, I have held several different types of jobs where the employer has set the rules for breaks, during a work shift. Many employers only want to employ their help, on a part-time basis so these employers can save money. Many of these same employers, will often pay their part-time workers, minimum wages, not offer benefits, nor vacation, nor retirement. Often these same employers, over work their employees while under paying them and often times expect their employees to work without a break during their shift, even though, the law requires that an employer make breaks mandatory.

When Joel said that we wanted our "independence" I had to laugh. The way he said it reminded me of King George III in the Hamilton musical 😂😂😂

Fast food once a month? That was my Family back in the 1970's & 80's. Fast food places at Lunch time and Dinner are crazy busy and I'd say Chic-fil-A has the busiest drive thru of them all.

it’s not that 50 million people eat fast food every day, it’s that every day, 50 million people eat fast food. It could be different sets of 50 million people.
