Is it really a "home" ? Or just another investment "income generating" property ? We are looking for an actual place where to live long term, possibly permanently.

I'd say that actually the potential for these properties to be your "home," in the end, outweighs rental income to be honest! Returns will not be gigantic - a well-run property pays its operating costs and after you pay your property manager and everyone that it takes to manage a rental fairly and legally, there are likely other investments out there that would do better. Spending serious time in Guanacaste would be a bigger "prize" in the end.
