6 Cars To Avoid - Top Gear 1997
Quentin Willson presents you a few cars which in his and Top Gear's opinion (at the time) are cars you should avoid owning or buying.

Top Gear on BBC2 TV back in the 1990's was a TV program I looked forward to watching & was always very entertaining & interesting with presenters like Quentin Willson giving good advice on buying certain & general second hand cars. His droll & dead pan sense of humour certainly takes some getting used to! Be interesting to see if those 6 cars that were paraded here are still on the road today!

There are no DVLA records for the Escort or the Terrano, but certainly none of the others are still on the road. Perhaps predictably the Metro had the shortest life, and was last taxed in 2003. The Volvo made it a year longer to 2004, the Scorpio to 2007 and the Serena to 2011. Assuming they're not sitting awaiting restoration in someone's lockup, they are all long dead with two of them not even making it to 10 years, and a third only just. A lot of stuff of this era was needing attention from a MIG welder at MOT time from 5-6 years old. Seems barely believable now.

@@limpet7r63 Another possibility is that one or two of the cars ended up broken for spares, like a large number of Morris Marina/Ital's. (for many years the Morris Minor/Oxford retrofittable parts were worth more than the donor cars they came from)

I think he was a bit harsh on the Terrano. It was certainly up to par with a Discovery of the day and would almost certainly be much more reliable too! He was right about the others though. Ford and Rover really did churn out some rubish for years didn't they! Isn't in incredible how in this video he's bashing the Mk5 Escort and just a year later Ford launched the mk1 Focus... People forget how truly radical and amazing that car was for its day!

It's I think they didn't like the Terranos front end looks. Though the Facelift Terranos looks good but by then the Terrano was getting a bit old. The Terranos are more reliable than the newer Nissan cars.

My dad had an H reg Volvo 440. It was indeed awful. Everything that wasn't essential for it to pass an MOT had packed up, from electric windows, central locking, sunroof, A/C, stereo, everything non-vital. The interior creaked and rattled like you wouldn't believe. He used the 2009 scrappage scheme to change it for a Hyundai i20 which he still drives happily.

I can't comment on depreciation back then, but tbh the Serena's aren't too bad, at least I see some still on the road without rotting everywhere like some other Vans of that era. Especially Merc's V-Class from back then just rotted and rusted everywhere, while the Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra fell apart inside (between the mandatory swaps of mondeo front axle parts). Love the dry humor tough, "topless model that had one facelift too many" xD

I owned a rover metro as my very 1st car, and it was great little bit of kit, ( i wish i still kept it ) i had two more after that, and they are great little motors. Rover ditched all the performance models, on the R100 series. Also the last versions rotted far worse then the earlier rover metro. So Rover really did cut back on the Rover 100, which was a shame. If they had kept the sports models and maybe added the 1.6 engine, it would have been strong. But sadly as much as love the metro, i think Rover should have moved onwards with the design like the rest of the car industrial.

The Escort Cabriolet was horrific, but it probably had more go than the infamous 1.3 Harrier of this era. This really was a dog, the black paintwork and gold stripes hiding a car that had an engine that could have come out of an FSO as it was so slow and noisy, a really grim grey plastic interior, a rubbish four speed transmission when nearly everyone else had five speeds, and a dislike of starting in wet weather. I was a passenger in an Escort Harrier a couple of times in the nineties and it was the worst car, barring a Polski Fiat, I've ever been in. The owner wisely ditched this horror for a Peugeot 306 which was light years ahead.

Great to see this again, this segment helped inspire the purchase of our Social Services Minibus, a 1992 Nissan Serena: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4utn3qvmJaZbZo. P284WFW is no longer on the road, last tax expired in February 2012 and last MOT was due in October 2011. This one in the segment was a Diesel originally registered in January 1997, probably built in Barcelona, given it's an EU car. Although, I can still find plenty of Serena parts in Europe and Japan, there are those that want to keep them on the road and the mechanical parts are cheap (with the exception of the expansion tank often listed incorrectly as the washer bottle). However, the cosmetic ones can be a bit expensive if you need them and are harder to find. Still it is a fun project and worth preserving, especially an exceedingly rare Australian spec SR20 manual.

He happened to be correct about all of these. They were dull and deficient when new, and the attitude to them has not changed. A classic car has to be more than just old. The only time a terrible car becomes valuable in its own right is when it's old enough to be a relic, and thereby a study in period production, whether good or bad. The idea of buying based on 'trendy image' is really only the concern of car dealers. They profit from it, but many rubbish cars are temporarily trendy. What he means by 'trendy', for the most part, is 'good', and increasingly popular because of the cachet of being good. Yet, when a system that is antithetical to free choice can shift market forces by imposing artificial popularity, we end up with regressive quality, and aggressive demands to use the limited offerings. It's easy to convince a certain portion of the population of almost anything given enough PR, but most naturally successful products offer more than just the mask of mob approval.

Viewers clearly disagreed, as TopGear ratings crashed after Clarkson headed off to do his own stuff. Quentin & the rest were laid off in 2001, with only James May getting to follow Clarkson onto reworked TopGear. (the latter of which wouldn't have existed at all had Jezza not lobbied for it)

@Jim Taylor Popularity isn't a sign of superiority. Clarkson post posh boy times is and remains a loud, boorish and abrasive person with comically out of touch views. I can't stand the rodent man either. I used to like May but he older he gets the more insufferable he gets. I'm glad they buggered off mainstream TV to do The Grand Snore.

I disagree. It was a highly successful attempt at making a luxury saloon car to replace the aging Granada. They were a very modern, well built car, that's only downfall was that people disliked the styling and were unwilling to accept it in the same way that they did with the Sierra's "Jelly Mould" design.

It worries me why more people can't just get a grip and buy proper 80s-00s German or Japanese. Intelligence is scarce nowadays. It's just french shit and councilmobiles aka Vauxhall's that litter the UK roads driven by simpletons who owned these horrendous horror shows back in the day.

Most German cars are just overrated for reliability and build quality, they just live on with their reputation. Japanese cars though are reliable. Vauxhalls are basically German because they are developed by Opel in Germany and they are sold as Opels in the rest of Europe.

@@terrificspokesman7416 I'm a garage foreman I work on vehicles 6 days a week and I've owned many a Vag and BMW. I've had problems here and there but overall the quality of the 80s-00s era German vehicles generally is outstanding. I wouldn't say that about any modern vehicle even Japanese. Lexus/Toyota are the most reliable brand then Honda. Only thing German about Vauxhall's is the Bosch parts here and there. Opel is just a brand name they don't produce anything Vauxhall/Opel are thrown together in the north west of England. The point I'm making is their are thick people out there who spend a couple of grand on a clapped out Corsa when they could of bought a golf or even 5 series for under a grand that is built to be a proper vehicle. I refuse to work on Vauxhall, Renault, shitroen, Peugeot.. it's against my principals keeping them and their owners on the road. People shouldn't be allowed the right to drive if they don't know any better. My children have to cross the road and if council scumbags in Vauxhall's didn't exist the world would be a better place.

@@speedoman1234 some Vauxhalls like the Astra are out together in Britain but the Corsa is put together in Spain and the Insignia and other Vauxhall vehicles are put together in Germany yet they all have the same build quality. You are right about the 80s to 00s German cars. Those cars were excellent in build quality. But then things went a little downhill. I agree on French cars. Some of the older French cars were good but all the modern ones are pretty bad in reliability. Ford have also gone downhill especially in Europe with those EcoBoost petrols and the quality is not the best.

@@terrificspokesman7416 I don't see any reason to buy a Vauxhall/Opel in the first place.. second hand vehicles are relatively the same price over a certain age and if someone wants to spend 20k on a brand new Vauxhall insignia they should be given a crayon instead of a pen. I can go on all day with Vauxhall's design flaws but a gearbox overlapping a sump is ridiculous. I agree old French diesels weren't half bad but I rather an old VTEC or an old Audi diesel. I couldn't agree more with the ecoboost engines but ford has never been a quality brand and the pricing is ridiculous for what they are.
