You can get closed cell pipe insulation (you are using open cell which is why it absorbs liquids), it is usually sold for AC use so that it doesn't absorb the condensation from the freon lines. You can also get it longer in rolls vs the sticks at the hardware store if you look online. Closed cell is more dense and weighs more so you would need thinner walls. Would be interesting to try to compare them.

Backer rod. It's the same foam as pipe insulation but without the pipe-hole through the middle.

Brilliant! I have 50 of those v2 pipe insulators. That I've used to protect metal art during transport. Now I can actually use them for something else. I checked out the cush core recently. Sells for $225 in Canada.

Did the same before I got rimpact pro - I bought some lengths of closed cell pipe insulation and made my own ''ghettocore'. Nowhere near as good as the proper rimpact pro in terms of longevity (and feel) but at that price (I think it was $3 for 6ft or something for the closed cell) I wasn't complaining, and it certainly held up to Mountain Creek's tough tech for a season with no problems. Just don't go for insulation that is too wide, as coupled with the shape of it, it can be difficult to break the bead on the tyre for removal.

My hardtail has Cushcore plus front and rear. It feels awesome. I might try that with my Norco Sight.

I've been riding CushCore since 2019. I asked them when should they be replaced, and they said after 3 tire changes. I'm a believer. I've sliced my front and I was still able to ride it out of the trail. I've ridden 2 laps on a downhill and thought, let me check my tire pressure. Both front and rear were at 8psi. I almost couldn't tell I was basically running flat.

Just pump the tire to a pressure it can support uour riding level, and make MTB more sustainable!

These pipes would ruin the sealant flow in the tire, and they wouldn't be able to absorb even a third of the energy that better EVA models, like the old Vittoria Airliner, can. Your pipes are on the level of the cheap and almost useless Huck Norris, but for smashing through rock gardens on a hardtail, you'll definitely want something better.

What do inserts do for the ride quality? Is it really that good that you can’t do without?

The density of my insert differs quite much from this foam. The foam wouls propably work to some extent but would it be as good as the original? Dunno.

Infact, the inserts exist due to this "life hack" In the downhill anti puctures my mates used to do is usinga slick used tire inside but the walls wasn't protected... Later on, someone thought on using pool noodles and it worked ! Now inserts is a thing =P

@@MsTatakai That's interesting. But still the material of my insert differs from those pipes. So inserts may came from this life hack, but may be better. From what i heard inserts drink less sealant than pipe insulation. I use pipe insulation to protect bike during transport and insert from shop is much "denser" comparing to pipe insulation.

But how am I supposed to low key flex my disposable income on other mtb riders if I don't constantly talk about an overpriced mtb part I swear by like cush core that totally makes up for my dearth of skills? 😂
