I go thru some of the strengths and weaknesses of these 3 engines plus a comment about the RD GTR engines and a last impression about why straight sixes have great torque!

Datsun L heads - I've been cutting and welding these for 35yrs. You're right, the centre ports are far too big, some time with a grinder, TIG and 4943 rods makes for a better flow balance. These heads respond very well to raising the port roof considerably after the floor and SSR are welded. Chamber reshape helps economy too. Shooting for mid 700's on this L28 build (up from 620hp). Nice video Ben

Thanks Stuart and I will post a video on all three of them in a detailed format. I just was shown an aftermarket Z head from Japan and I told the owner, why is it still casted with the same large center exhaust ports? Anyway not surprising to me because I saw another aftermarket block with known issues of oiling problems, they were doing 100# or more of oil pressure! The aftermarket fix was an aluminum block with the diminutive main oil galley still like it was from the factory casting!!! I wonder who is actually designing this things if they do not race or value the opinion of those that seriously run them at the track not at the hamburger joint.

The Ford FE. I use a line off of the filter pad drill the front feed to the center main feed that runs the length of th the block front to rear. The front and #5 are fed from the enlarged center feed with 2-3-4 plugged at the top, so that 1-5 are well fed. The 2-3-4 are fed with lines being priority lines that come from the pad and feed the camshaft after the main. You can balance the pressure tic to top and valvetrain. I have pushed my FEs with the enlarged and external lines to 8500. Rpm’s.

I love when someone comes up with various methods. The Buick Big Block and Ford Y block also had limitations that people had to work around.

Years ago I had a 260z with a 280 engine and an automatic. Got tired of the damn floats in the stock side draft carbs not staying set and flooding. I made an intake that came out and down with exhaust tubing from the stock intakes to a Rochester 2 barrel. The thing made so much torque with that long skinny tractor looking intake, it started shearing flexplates in half around the crank bolts. After a few of these I welded 2 flex plates together. That thing would actually do a burn out, chirped the tires hard going into second. It would get 27-28 mpg if you could make yourself drive it right, and hauled A55. 😅

Long runners on an inline engine means big torque! Glad you had fun with it.

The RB suffers from feeding the head too much oil with not enough draining capacity. There is a mod done on the back of the head near the bellhousing that makes an external drain from the head to the block.

Thanks for the input and I also noticed the main oil well diameter feeding the crank is much too small compared to the 2JZ and Datsun Z plus the BMW's. I feel this is a major defect and there was another famous racing engine that resorted to what they call a "side oiler" block that had similar issues.

The BMW head does look awesome in potential, for architecture. While flow numbers are useful, to a point, are there any dynamometer comparisons of comparable setups? I’m thinking, a dynamometer comparison to include BSFC, would be revealing. Have you seen David Vizard’s recent video, where he’s introducing the idea of a polyhedral chamber, (alternately staggered size valves), to foster what he is calling, “twirl”.
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
Yes and you can do a little of that by changing the intake valve job or seat angles on one side only and not the exhaust.

@@benalamedaracing2765 was thinking along the same lines, but, accomplishing the difference in port energy / discharge coefficient, by having two different throat percentages, 86% and 88%? Nothr thing mentioned, was sinking the exhaust valves, to discourage over scavenge during overlap. Thinking a better approach might be to drop the chamber roof, to allow for wider departure / top cut, and using the resulting ridge at the intersection of the intake and exhaust top cuts to discourage the over scavenge. Thinkin’ generally, most 4 valves would benefit from the dropping the roof to widen the top cuts, as most 4 valve heads seem to have a minimal top cut / departure angle, and have seen several where the seats actually “sit proud”, several thousandths.

What bmw is that? Looks like m50 style exhaust stud pattern , looks like a s54 in the first picture ? You mention aluminim block bmw's ? (S54 is iron ) is it a euro s50/s52? im just confused what engine or combination of bmw engines you show. Also worth a mention , the 2jz has a taller deck height than a bmw , the bmw motors have short rods / poor rod ratio by comparison. Bmw's bigger than 2.8L like to load the cylinder wall/ oval bores.

Poly quad head /valve design can help create swirl in a 4valve head Larger and smaller inlet valves oppose smaller and larger exhaust valve sizing

That, and some used a different cam profile for the two intake valves. The Honda Civic HX was it.

I feel the intake valves will get assistance with different diameters or different valve seats perhaps steeper @ 50* instead of the traditional 45* from the factory on just one valve. This said, I see no reason to swirl the exhaust as it accomplishes basically nothing. No need to place any kind of mixture motion, we just need to scavenge it out of there asap, energy spent and used so we must discard of it as fast as possible. We are not trying to keep the mixture together or keep them in suspension they are all basically ignition waste gases.
